FRIDAY FASHION ILLUSTRATION: NEW SAGE GREEN PUFFER!

Hello dear readers and fellow bloggers! It's Friday and it means it's time for another Friday Fashion Illustration. This is the last in the series of five quickly drawn and messy fashion sketches. They were all drawn with some random coloured pencils on A4 printing paper ( See 1/ 2/ 3/ ). I made two more drawings but of my old outfits, so I'm not sure when I'll post those. Maybe I find time to make something more ambitious for next Friday Fashion Illustration. Maybe not. I'm posting these fashion sketches to remind myself that it is important to practice, especially when you don't have time to. Sometimes a couple of minutes for sketching is as much as you are given, so learn how to make them count. That's what I tell myself anyway. I'm also trying to learn by observing every chance I get. I like how over the years, this blog has seen all kind of takes on fashion illustrations, from random creative stuff to more professional or artistic looking fashion art. I kept things interesting, even if I didn't really set out to be particularly inventive with my fashion illustration. As I learnt more about art, and made progress in my art skills, my fashion illustration game also improved.

Speaking of art, I do still make proper paintings, canvases and all, but between work, moving around and all that, I cannot seem to find time to post my new paintings let alone to write about them. I cannot really promise you anything at this point. You might see a new art post soon or you might have to wait for the next art post a little bit. In meantime, here is a new outfit and a new fashion illustration for you. I'm actually wearing something new in this outfit and it this greyish green puffer jacket. Classical coats are elegant and chic, but when the cold starts biting, I reach for puffers.  I've become somewhat of a pro at shopping my closet over the years. I suspect that blogging about sustainable fashion had something to do with that. Anyway, I don't  really feel the need to buy new clothes. I genuinely enjoy having fun with the clothes I already have. Still, sometimes I might need something new.

Now, I have a couple of puffers but only one long one. That long beige puffer I bought more than a decade ago in is starting to show signs of wear. Therefore, after some encouragement from my significant other I agreed on getting myself a new long puffer.  So, I went out and got it. With Autumn and Winter being somewhat colder than usual this year, I really did need a new long puffer. Another reason why I need is that I move around a lot, and with all the moving around, sometimes I spend time in houses that haven't been heated for a while. Moreover, I do like to spend time outdoors, even when it is cold. Believe it or not, it also get cold in the Mediterranean region. We're not immune to Winters. True they are mild most of the times, but it also gets cold.

These particular photographs were taken in Mostar during my Winter break. I was very surprised when it snowed. I didn't think the snow will stick when I saw it falling. While the mountains around Mostar are often covered with snow, the city itself is at sea level, so it does nor snow there often. I expected the snow to melt in the morning, so when I saw that it stayed I was flaggergasted. I was happy, though. I knew that I wouldn't be able to spend a lot of time in Mostar and in my own home, so the fact that it snowed while I was there made it all feel more special and festive. I had to cut my winter vacation in half to go and move to another place that we also moved after a couple of weeks. I mean really we had a hard time with all the moving. This made this snowy day even more special. I admired snow from my window for quite some time. My balcony looked so charming covered with snow. The pine tree my husband planted decades ago in front of my home never looked more beautiful. Such a gorgeous tree! After a while, we went out for a walk. I took my umbrella with me as it was still snowing. It seemed like we were in another city. That is what I like about snow. Whenever it snows, I have a feeling like I moved to some other country. It is like being in some winter fairytale. I know that those of you who live in cold climates probably get tired of snow, but for me it is more like a welcome surprise. So, it was definitely fun getting to enjoy snow. We did only have a bit of time with it. By tomorrow, all the snow melted- and well, that was that.

I probably wouldn't have been so happy about the snow if I hadn't been on vacation (that is a winter break). However, being off work, I did have fun walking around in the snow. Nobody likes worrying about snow when work presses on. It is interesting how it is all different when you have some time on your hands, isn't it? Being in the snow  brought some fun memories from my childhood. I remember how I used to run in a circle and then have fun jumping into the snow in the middle of the circle. My dad is the only one in the family that knows how to snow. We used to go to a ski resort for a few years when we were really little, even if none of us ever learnt to ski. My brother and I were only about three or four the last time we went, so were too young to learn. We used to watch my dad ski, though. For military pilots, skiing was obligatory. It was something to do with the fitness. They had to do it during their winter vacation or something. Anyway, then the war started and we never went to a ski resort after that. Nobody went to ski resorts during the war. I never learnt to ski.

Snow always continued to fascinate me, though. I had a mix of fear and fascination with it. The same way I did with the cold. Being brought up in coastal region did not make me resilient to either. Still, with time I learnt to love winter, even the really cold winters that are so rare where I'm from. Inspired by visiting our relatives in snowy Slavonia, I wrote a snowy fairy tale as a kid. I still remember writing it vividly. I also remember how magical all those continental parts of Croatia looked to me as we travelled to Slavonia. No wonder I was inspired to write a fairy tale. It was about a girl that was raised by a bear and ended up being some kind of a winter princess.  She always wore white and was friend with all the animals in the forest. Little did I know that this motif of a girl brought up by bears actually exists in European folk tales. Maybe it was some kind of subconscious cultural memory? I was around seven when I wrote that story and I do no believe I heard those bear stories before. I came across them much later. When I was little, I often wrote. I used to carry my notebook with me everywhere, even when we went on school excursion or visited National Parks. My teachers would roll their eyes at me. Fortunately, I was mostly too innocent to realize how much I got on their nerves sometimes. As a kid and later on teenager, I wrote poems, short stories and fairy tales. When I started school, my teachers would give me Fs because they taught I cheated and copied my essays from somewhere. I never did. Not that I (or anyone else) could. It is not like you can know the topic you have to write the essay on. It's something teachers only give on the day of the written essay exam. Still, I got Fs because my extended vocabulary was suspicious to them. My prose was lyrical because I read. Reading and writing kind of goes hand in hand. Writing still comes naturally to me, even if sometimes I wonder if I have something really meaningful to  say or put down on paper (or a computer screen). Well, at least nowadays nobody accuses me of copying my texts. Nothing ever came out of bad grades I was given in primary and secondary education. Everyone had bad grades back then.  In a class of 30 or 40 if there was more than one A student, it was like a miracle. Today everyone has an A, but the standards of education are dropping by the minute. People think technology can replace writing and reading. It cannot. Reading and writing are basic skills. Without them, it's just Fahrenheit 451, you know, a world where writing and reading is not deemed politically correct. Alright, that's enough of a trip down the memory lane for today.

I think this was also the first time I wore this long sage puffer on my blog. I paired it with doctor Martens boots (my first choice when it snows). I'm a bit clumsy on snow, as I never got much practice. So, basically I almost always wear doc Martens boots when it snows. I also went full winter gear with the gloves, the tartan scarf and the cap. I picked bright colours for my winter accessories. My gloves were pink with a typical winter pattern, my tartan scarf a classical brown, white and black pattern, and my cap was neon orange with a fun winter pattern as well. I always love to see a bit colour in the Winter. How about you? Neutral colours can be great, but when nature turns white or grey, why not add infuse some colour to our outfits. Speaking of my outfit, let's break it down, shall we?

The long sage puffer coat- First wear. Bought in a mall. Not sure about the brand.

The coat was discounted. I don't remember how much, but I think it was half the price. The lady that sold it to me gave me her (employer) discount. That was so sweet from the cashier, wasn't it? I wanted to buy her a chocolate to thank her and I went to DM to get it, but the line at DM was impossibly long, so I left it for some other time. I hope I won't forget it. I forgot how much I paid for it in the end but I remember that it was neither expensive nor cheap. The kind of price you would expect for a quality puffer coat. It has served me well, too. I have worn it many times since I bought it.

Doctor Martens boots- I had them since I was 15.

The classical tartan scarf

The neon orange winter cap
I couldn't find an outfit with it on my blog. Do you guys remember whether I posted it before?

The pink gloves

The black cigarette pants (or really leggings- not sure how to define them).
I wear them more as leggings then as pants.

Sometimes it's fun to feel like a kid. Snow can do that to you sometimes. Speaking of snow and puffer jackets, I remember another winter outfit I illustrated. Unlike the fashion illustration I'm posting today, that one was done with watercolour pencils. It was also one of the rare fashion illustrations I was really happy with. I think I did a great job with capturing the puffer jacket on that one. Puffer jackets can be tricky to draw. You know that's one of the things I love about art. It forces you to stop and really look at things. It makes you analyze what you see. In a way, art opens your eye to a new world. You start noticing things you might never notice otherwise.

Art can be messy and hard. It can be tiring. It can make you feel like you'll never get there. It can make you second guess everything you do. However, it can also be eye-opening, inspiring and beautiful. Art skills take time to develop and require time for you to keep them up. If you don't use it, you lose it- that's often the deal. So, it takes some disciple and focus. Still, it gives so much in return, does it not? Often it feels like it is worth the effort.

Besides illustrating my own outfits and promoting sustainable fashion that way, I also illustrate other bloggers.  The last blogger I illustrated was Silvia from S in the Fashion Avenue
and there are many more I illustrated (links below)

More of my fashion illustrations:

How I captured and embraced snow in Mostar (and Bosnia and Herzegovina) before?

I don't have anything special to write about this particular fashion drawing. My proportions feel a bit off. I was in a hurry both to start it and to finish it, and it shows. Still, I think I captured some things alright, like the colour and the feeling of the puffer coat for example. I captured the moment, and that's something, isn't it?

How are you doing? Here we had a bit of situation with the floods. Not as bad as it could get, but still not exactly fun. It has been raining for days. We do get a sunny day now and then. I do not always manage to capture it, though. I also don't manage to always blog about my trips. All in due time. If God is willing, there will be many more travel posts. If not, well - I'll see you when I see you.

I hope you are all doing well. The Winter is still ahead of us, so let us embrace it with a bit of Croatian poetry. Dragutin Tadijanović is one of my favourite Croatian poets. He lived to an old age and was a very prolific writers. He was born in 1905 and died in 2007. Imagine the things he must have seen in his life. He lived through many wars, including the WWI and WWII. Still, he kept his sense of humour. Dragun used to joke when he saw people he knew on the street- Hey, I didn't know you were still alive. All of these people were usually much younger than him- that was the joke.  When I was a kid, he was one of the few poets whose date of death we did not have to learn. I still remember the teachers writing his name on the board with only his date of death. We always wondered how long he is going to live. It seemed like he was defying death. He was over a hundred when he died, so in a way he did.

Late into the night, into the white winter night

Late into the night, into the silent winter night
My mother weaves white cloth

Her hunched shape and her gray hairs
had bathed her in tears long ago.
The trace from a lamp on a window runs across the whole backyard
Over the snow that is falling outside
in a never ending silence, in a never ending silence:
Angels from the sky, with gentle hands,
are lowering frozen stars on the ground,
Taking great care not to awake my precious.

Long into the night, into the deserted winter night
My mother weaves white cloth.

Oh, sorrowful mother! tell me, what it is that shines
in your eyes.

Long into the night, the white winter night.

Poem written in 1931 by Dragutin Tadijanović (and translated by me)

Dugo u noć, u zimsku bijelu noć

Dugo u noć, u zimsku gluhu noć
 Moja mati bijelo platno tka.

Njen pognuti lik i prosijede njene kose
Odavna je već zališe suzama.

Trak lampe s prozora pružen je čitavim dvorištem
Po snijegu što vani pada
U tišini bez kraja, u tišini bez kraja
Anđeli s neba, nježnim rukama,
Spuštaju smrzle zvijezdice na zemlju
Pazeć da ne bi zlato moje probudili.
Dugo u noć, u zimsku bijelu noć

Moja mati bijelo platno tka.
O mati žalosna!
Kaži, što sja
U tvojim očima
Dugo u noć, u zimsku bijelu noć

I managed to find a translation of this poem to other languages, including Polish. This translation was done by language students of Croatian language (pdf here).

Długo w noc, zimową, białą noc
Długo w noc, w zimową głuchą noc

 Moja matka białe płótno tka.
Jej pochylona postać i jej posiwiałe włosy
Od dawna zalane łzami.
Smuga światła rozlewa się po całym podwórzu
Po śniegu, który pada na zewnątrz
W ciszy bez końca, w ciszy bez końca:
Aniołowie z nieba, delikatnymi rękoma,
spuszczają zamarznięte gwiazdki na ziemię trudząc się,
 by nie obudzili mojego skarbu.

Długo w noc, zimową białą noc,
Moja matka tka białe płótno.
O matko nieszczęsna!
Powiedz, co błyszczy w twoich oczach
Długo w noc, w białą zimową noc
