FASHION ILLUSTRATION WEDNESDAY: INSPIRED BY VIX

Hello and welcome to another fashion illustration post. This fashion illustration was inspired by a fellow blogger Vix from blog Vintage Vixen. As you might know, sometimes I illustrate bloggers for my 'Inspired by' posts. I've been doing it for years. This is not my first time illustrating Vix either. In fact, while browsing my laptop's arhive today, I'd come to realize that I have illustrated Vix four times before, so this was my fifth illustration.

As a reference I used a photograph of a beautiful vintage outfit posted on Vix's blog (this post). The illustrated outfit consists of a gorgeous  maxi velvet dress from the sixties paired with a Nigel Rayment hat and some lovely accessories. I've always loved the combination of blue and green colour palettes. The medium for this illustration is watercolour pencils on paper. That's the medium I've been working with most often lately (as you might have noticed). The illustration style I opted the elongated figure that is often  used in fashion illustrating (so called fashion figure).

HR Pozdrav i dobrodošli u još jednu objavu posvećenu modnim ilustracijama.

Uvijek sam voljela kombinaciju plavih i zelenih nijansi.

THE MAKING OF A FASHION ILLUSTRATION

I don't have a lot of experience illustrating velvet so this was a nice practice for me. Bellow you can see the 'making of this velvet fashion illustration'. I used a lighter green pencil for places where the velvet caught light. Velvet always appears lighter when on the places where it catches the light.  Another thing I tried to capture on this dress were the flower applications. They are cute, aren't they?  The flowers are very sixties chic.  If I have had the time to create a more detailed illustration, perhaps I would have tried capturing all the rings and bracelets, this way I only hinted at the two rings. On the other hand, there was one accessory that I simply had to capture- and that was the hat.  Illustrating this hat was fun, it's a lovely piece.

I cannot tell for sure whether the referenced dress is more sacramento green or dark pine green, but either way I don't think I captured the exact shade. I cannot really mix the colours that much when I'm working with a limited set of watercolour pencils. I did use a darker watercolour pencils to try to capture the dark green velvet of this dress.  My illustrated dress came out a bit lighter then the one in the reference photograph, but I didn't feel like altering the original illustration with editing. I've created some collages for fun, but that was the only editing I did. I also made sure to capture this illustration under sunlight. What you can see bellow is an unedited photograph  of this illustration taken under natural light. Being under direct sunlight means that the colours on this illustration are a bit different (i.e. lighter) than if I took this photograph in the shade, so keep that in mind. I typically try to take photographs both under direct and in the shade to give you a better idea of the illustration.

Obično pokušavam fotografirati i pod izravnim i u sjeni kako bih vam dala bolju predodžbu o ilustraciji.

FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT VELVET:

Velvet, in textiles, fabric having a short, dense pile, used in clothing and upholstery. The term derives from the Middle French velu, “shaggy.” Velvet is made in the pile weave, of silkcotton, or synthetic fibres, and is characterized by a soft, downy surface formed by clipped yarns. The wrong side of the fabric is smooth and shows the weave employed. * https://www.britannica.com/topic/velvet-fabric

VELVET, a silken textile fabric having a short dense piled surface. In all probability the art of velvet-weaving originated in the Far East; and it is not till about the beginning of the 14th century that we find any mention of the textile. The peculiar properties of velvet, the splendid yet softened depth of dye-colour it exhibited, at once marked it out as a fit material for ecclesiastical vestments, royal and state robes, and sumptuous hangings; and the most magnificent textures of medieval times were Italian velvets. These were in many ways most effectively treated for ornamentation, such as by varying the colour of the pile, by producing pile of different lengths (pile upon pile, or double pile), and by brocading with plain silk, with uncut pile or with a ground of gold tissue, &c. The earliest sources of European artistic velvets were Catanzaro,[4][5] LuccaGenoaFlorence, and Venice, which continued to send out rich velvet textures. Somewhat later the art was taken up by Flemish weavers, and in the sixteenth century, Bruges attained a reputation for velvets that were not inferior to those of the great Italian cities.* wikipedia

    Complimenti!

I think your blogger friend must be very flattered to be drawn by you! I think you challenge yourself and the drawing technique, when you propose to draw denim, puffer coats and now velvet, and it doesn't really look like velvet!!! Impressive!!

  17. Hello Ivana, I hope you're having a fantastic day and that everything is going well on your side :)

I always like when you take a blogger or an influencer as inspiration for your drawings! You always spot inspiration everywhere and I didn't know Vix work! I loved the way you mixed the colors from the original outfit.

I do agree with you that capturing the texture of a specific fabric could complex, specially when you involve light, shadows and the way the same color goes through different shades. I also didn't know that the word velvet comes from the french, and we tend to use it a lot! In spanish it is "terciopelo" which I imagine has to do with the softness of the fabric.

    Have a great weekend!
