REVISITING JELSA ON ISLAND HVAR, CROATIA!

Hi there! Today I'm taking you to Jelsa. If Croatia is your destination, island Hvar should be on your list. Once you get to island Hvar, don't forget to pay Jelsa a visit. Jelsa inspired not one, but SIX of my paintings! It's been one of the stars of Travel With My Art Series. I stopped this blog series because my art was stolen by AI (everyone's art is, really!) but if I ever decide to continue it, I'm sure Jelsa will make another appearance. I didn't stop painting and making art, I just stopped sharing it alone. I have actually been working on several commissioned painting. Maybe I'll start posting my art online again some day, but I'm still not decided. However, I'll share some of my old paintings of Jelsa in his post!

Regular readers of my blog might remember that I used to live in Jelsa. I lived there back in 2019 & 2020. Let me tell you, I loved living in this little town on island Hvar. Well, technically it's not a town but a municipality but let's not split hairs. Even I myself sometimes refer to Jelsa as a town, even though it doesn't have a status of one (officially) but it definitely feels like a little town. Jelsa was founded in the 14th century and at the height of its power it was one of the most important Adriatic ports. There is definite evidence of urban tradition in this town so you won't be wrong to call it a little town. Jelsa is a tourist oriented town so it is extremely visit friendly.  I absolutely love Jelsa.

My first visit to Jelsa this Summer lasted only a day and a half. I stayed with a teacher friend, crashed on her sofa pretty much. The two of us caught up and enjoyed a few nice walks together. I wore a pale blue Grecian dress and black sandals. You'll be able to see it all in the photos. I'll also share some collages with old photos of Jelsa and links that will allow you to read more about this place. If you want to know more about Jelsa, this blog is a pretty good place to start.

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM JELSA, ISLAND HVAR, CROATIA

ARRIVAL TO THE HARBOR

I took the catamaran from Split to Jelsa. The ride was 'interesting'. Drunken EU tourists were throwing up all over the place. I won't write their ethnicity but you can probably guess. I don't think I have never seen people this drunk in my life. It was in the early afternoon, mind you.  Some tourists are so self-entitled. The regular ferry and catamaran rides are the only means for transport for the local people. People take these rides to go to the hospital, to visit their family or run their errands. Somebody coming back from chemo or surgery doesn't need a drunken bunch of men around him/her. Maybe they should make separate rides for tourists and locals. Maybe the police should do their job. Anyhow, it was the longest ride of my life. They were so loud it was impossible to talk on phone. I had to cut the conversations I tried to have. Once I got to the island, I could finally relax. Jelsa is more oriented to nautical and family tourism. It's not a party destination. Thank God!

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN JELSA?

As you can see, Jelsa is a beautiful little place. What to see in Jelsa? There are certainly quite a few beautiful and historical attractions to see here. To start, why not visit the old city (Civitas Vetus Ielsae)? The old city of Jelsa (where part of the defensive wall is also preserved) is definitely worth a visit! There are also many beautiful churches to see: the church of the Saint Mary of Health (built in 1535), the church of San Roch (built in the second half of the 16th century), the church of Saint Michael (built in 1463). In Jelsa you can also find one of the largest is the most beautiful parks in Dalmatia - Perivoj, built in 1870.

Come potete vedere, Jelsa è un bel posticino. Cosa vedere a Jelsa?

The nature surrounding Jelsa is truly beautiful. Following the coastal pathways, you can hike both left and right to discover enchanting bays and untouched nature. You can also hike the green hills this island has to over. Hvar is also known as the green island. It is covered in pine tree forest so walking here will do wonders for your lungs. You know I'm a bit believer in benefits of hiking and spending time outdoors. Weekends are perfect for going  for a long walk. It is always good to be proactive about our health.

This is where we went for a swim. Isn't it divine?

  8. Hello, Ivana,
I was sad to hear that your paintings were stolen by the AI, I can't imagine how you feel! But I'm glad you're still painting and making money from it! I remember perfectly when you lived on the island of Hvar and how beautiful your pictures were. It was nice to remember your looks and some of the places.
