TRAVEL WITH MY ART #12: ZAVALA, ISLAND HVAR

Hello and welcome to  the twelfth post in TRAVEL WITH MY ART series! I'm excited to share this new canvas painting with you. The medium for this painting is acrylic paints on canvas. I applied a varnish spray over it to protect the colours and add some shine. If the painting looks familiar, it's probably because I have already painted this beach in Zavala (and I might paint it again). This time I captured this beautiful Croatian beach from a bird-eye perspective, though. It might be the same beach, but it's a different painting.  This one is all about the Adriatic sea embracing the stones and the beach. My post will also include my reference photographs (I've used to make this painting) as well as some other photographs we took there.

THE MAKING OF A PAINTING - THE SONG OF THE SEA
There are so many layers in this painting. It took me forever to make it. Well, not forever but about 70 hours. I also made a mini canvas version of it that took me significantly less time. I put it so much effort into this painting and I think it payed off. What do you guys think? The sea looks real enough, doesn't it? It's fascinating to paint the sea. There are so many different colours and tines you need to know how to use and mix. Moreover, you must be so careful with reflections and shades to get it right. It's quite hard to make the sea come alive. Often it can be exhausting, but there are moments when painting the sea can feel like meditation. Still, it's not the easiest of tasks. That is why sometimes I do quicker seascapes. These kind of detailed seascapes take a lot from me. To be completely honest, this kind of canvases usually result in a lot of back pain. I try to do exercises for artists and all that, but I have scoliosis meaning that I suffer from chronic back pain. Hence painting is often quite painful for me.

TRAVEL WITH MY ART- ZAVALA, ISLAND HVAR, CROATIA

Once again I'm taking you to Zavala. I hope you don't mind the repeated visits. I personally think this place is worth it. I visited Zavala a couple of times while living on island Hvar (Croatia). I must have been mighty impressed by it because I just can't stop painting it. The painting I'm sharing with you today was inspired by a spring visit but I will also share some summer visit photographs I haven't shared before. This painting is no longer with me and to be honest I kind of miss it. I wish I could have hanged on it for a little while. However, I'm also glad it found a new home. You see, I gifted this painting. If you want, you may see in in restaurant Torkul in Sveti Filip and Jakov (near Zadar). If you ever stop at that restaurant, you can see it on the wall.

  1. What a pleasure it is to travel to Zavala with you, especially on this hot Summer's day, when the sight of the clear blue sea is very welcome indeed. You captured the waves gently rolling on the beach magnificently. How intricately layered it is. The end result is well worth the 70 hours you spent painting this canvas. Thank you for sharing! xxx

  7. Hello dear Ivana,

First of al lI am sorry to hear that you're struggling with your back, I hope you can manage to get the proper attention to get better :( I imagine canvas painting require many hours in some uncomfortable positions.

But it definitely pays off and you can really notice the effort in this panting. You're getting better with each artwork and I love to see that you got inspired by an aerial picture, another perspective to show off the sea *_* The layering of the water is really magical and it just make me wanna go to the water and dive in.

I hope you're having a lovely week by the way, and happy Friday!
