TRAVEL WITH MY ART #30 : VALETTA, ISLAND MALTA

 In this post, I'll share an illustration that I have made  for and gifted to a friend of mine who lives in Malta. The medium is  water pastels on paper. It's just a quick sketch but I wanted to share it anyway.

I was inspired by Roman ruins in Valetta (Malta) that reminded me of Roman ruins in Split, Croatia.

Valletta (/vəˈlɛtə/, Maltese: il-Belt Valletta, Maltese pronunciation: [vɐˈlːɛtːɐ]) is the administrative unit and capital of Malta. Located on the main island, between Marsamxett Harbour to the west and the Grand Harbour to the east, its population within administrative limits in 2014 was 6,444.[3] According to the data from 2020 by Eurostat, the Functional Urban Area and metropolitan region covered the whole island and has a population of 480 134.[2][4] Valletta is the southernmost capital of Europe,[5][note 1] and at just 0.61 square kilometres (0.24 sq mi), it is the European Union's smallest capital city.[6][7]

Valletta's 16th-century buildings were constructed by the Knights Hospitaller. The city was named after Jean Parisot de Valette, who succeeded in defending the island from an Ottoman invasion during the Great Siege of Malta. The city is Baroque in character, with elements of Mannerist, Neo-Classical and Modern architecture, though the Second World War left major scars on the city, particularly the destruction of the Royal Opera House. The city was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.[8] Today, with 320 monuments, is one of the most dense monuments areas in the world.[8] Sometimes called an "open-air museum".[9] Valletta was chosen the European Capital of Culture 2018. Valletta is also the sunniest city in Europe.[10][11]

Valletta (kolokvijalno: Il Belt = "Grad") je glavni grad Malte. U Valletti se nalaze brojne znamenite građevine od 16. stoljeća nadalje koje su izgrađene za vrijeme kada su otokom vladali Ivanovci. Tako grad odiše umjetničkim stilovima kao što su: manirizam, barok (dominantan), neoklasicizam, ali i moderni funkcionalizam u područjima obnovljenima nakon stradanja u Drugom svjetskom ratu. Zbog tog bogatstva Valletta je upisana na UNESCO-ov popis mjesta svjetske baštine u Europi još 1980. godine.

Službeno ime koje je Red svetog Ivana dao gradu bilo je Humillima Civitas Valletta – grad posvećen poniznosti, međutim zbog svojih bastiona i tvrđava, zajedno s ljepotom baroknih zgrada duž uzanih ulica, postao je poznat kao Superbissima – „Veličanstveni“ među vladajućim kućama Europe. Na malteškom on se uobičajeno naziva Il-Belt, što jednostavno znači „Grad“.

Kamen temeljac grada Valletta postavio je Veliki majstor Reda svetog Ivana, Jean Parisot de la Valette, 28. ožujka 1566. Red (koji je bio dugo upravljao gradom i otokom) odlučio je osnovati novi grad na poluotoku Scebberras odmah poslije okončanja velike opsade Malte, da bi učvrstio poziciju reda na Malti – „malteških vitezova“. Grad je projektirao Francesco Lapparelli, dok je najvažnije zgrade sagradio Gerolamo Cassar. Valletta je zato grad s mnogim zgradama iz 16. stoljeća i kasnije, ali najveći broj ih je izgrađen u vrijeme Vitezova svetog Ivana iz Jeruzalema (Vitezova hospitalaca ili Malteških vitezova).

Poslije vitezova i kratke vladavine Francuza, sljedeći period veće gradnje bio je za vrijeme britanske vladavine. Vrata su proširena, zgrade rušene i ponovo zidane, kuće proširivane i instalirani uređaji za gradske potrebe. Međutim, čitav grad i njegova infrastruktura su oštećeni u zračnim napadina za vrijeme Drugog svjetskog rata, a veličanstvena zgrada opere, izgrađena u 19. stoljeću na ulazu u grad, srušena je. Grad ima brojne znamenite kafiće, mjesta za sastanke, restorane, banke, hotele i vladine zgrade. Postoje i javni vrtovi s kojih se pruža veličanstven pogled na Veliku luku i okolicu. Those columns are just amazing aren't they! I've always presumed you also write in Croatian for some reason but a translate programme tells me it is Bosnian. You are clever! :) x

    Hello Ivana, how's everything going on your side? I hope you're doing good :)

    Probably some of my favorite kind of posts in your blog since I can travel through many places from the comfort of my desk. It is amazing to see how you spot the little details that represent a certain place. I think your Malta friend was realy happy after receiving this incredible and unique gift... probably the best gift that one could have :)

    Thanks also for telling us a little bit about the background for this specific place and art style. I have heard a lot about the fortifications in this area and I am dying to visit soon!

 Hello! In this post, I'll share a sustainable baby blue and leopard spring styling. A pale blue might not be the first choice with leopard, but why not? For me leopard print is sort of a classic. I actually love to pair it with all kinds of colours, from more vibrant ones to pales ones. In the past, I paired it with cobalt blue . I definitely do not feel that leopard should be worn only with neutral colours. I mean I paired leopard with white, grey and black clothing items often enough, but I love to pair it with something that pops, be it a coloured or pattern item. I do love patterns. Sights to see, places to visit / Znamenitosti za vidjeti, mjesta za posjetiti -----Goranci

My Sights to see, places to visit feature would surely be missing something if I didn't include this little village Goranci in the list of places to visit. This charming little village is situated in the vicinity of Mostar.  I love to go there to espace the city heat.  If you are into cycling, you'd be happy to hear that you can rent a bike for free. You just need to leave your ID in the restaurant Goranci and you can take the bike. There is a wonderful cycling and pedestrian walk so be sure to check it out. As of recently, there is also a beautiful park at your disposal. This park is growing daily as new things are added to it(toys for kids and that sorts of stuff). If you look closely, you'll be able to see that some decorative trees are still being planted at the enterance to this park.  You can read some of my previous posts about this village here , here and here . THE ISLAND OF THE MISSING TREES BY ELIF SHAFAK (BOOK REVIEW AND RECOMMENDATION)

Today I shall review The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak. I was actually gifted this book. What a wonderful present it proved to be! Published in 2021, this postmodern  novel  follows two  story lines and uses framed narration.  The Island of Missing Trees  tells the life story of a Greek Turkish couple and their adolescent daughter.  This novel examines and explores a number of topics such as identity, migration, immigrant life, war trauma, memory, love and family. It's an ambitious novel that examines serious topics with due respect and sensitivity . I read it months ago, but I remember it vividly. Honestly, I cried a lot while reading this novel. It really moved me greatly. In fact, that is probably why it took me this long to finish this book review. I needed to emotionally process the story.   The Island of Missing Trees is   set in London and Cyprus. If you spent each day on a different Croatian island, it would take you three years to visit them all, as there are more than a 1, 200 islands in Croatia. I visted only one Croatian island this Summer and I'm currently trying to work out in my head how many of them I have visited in my lifetime. Alas, only a handful of them. So many Croatian islands to visit, so little time!   Standing on my grandmother's terrace, I realize the root of my fascination with rocks. Lake Mostar (revisited) / Mostarsko jezero (ponovni posjet).

It is an interesting feeling to get to wear one's own painting. As I repeated many times, I quite enjoy painting with textile paints. You can see some of my previous posts on this subject here , here ,  here and  here  (just in case you're looking for some inspiration). The location where the photographs were taken is Lake Mostar.  I visited it earlier this Summer ( here  and here ) and I found it to be an absolutely beautiful and very calming place. In my effort to  make the most of the last days of Summer, I decided to revisted it....and it was a good call. I had felt blissfully happy while I was there.  Zanimljiv je osjećaj nositi svoje slike. OZZ STUDENTS' FASHION SHOW, MENTOR FASHION DESIGNER STANKA ZOVKO (MOSTAR INTERNATIONAL FAIR)

EN  Hello! Today I'm happy to share with you a wonderful fashion show I attended last Friday at Mostar International Fair. As you might remember, I regularly visit Mostar International Fair.  Anyhow, this time I was there to see and support a  really special fashion show. This fashion show showed creations from students who attended a fashion sewing and design course held by designer Stanka Zovko. If you remember, a few years back  I attended this sewing and design course myself. I was invited to present my creations as well. I couldn't participate myself this year due to previous engagements, but who knows maybe next year I'll get the chance. How amazing would it be to participate as a fashion designer? Still, I'm sure you can imagine how excited I was just to  attend this fashion show and see all the designs.  It was such a terrific experience. HR Zdravo!
