Lado (drawing of the day/ crtež dana)

Hello everyone! Have I ever talked to you about my love for folklore? I've always been keen on exploring folklore dresses and costumes, mostly because I find them to be very inspirational. In my view, folklore is one of the best fashion inspiration out there. The diversity and the beauty of international folklore dresses and costumes is enough to leave anyone impressed. Here I illustrated one of Croatian national costumes ( we have a lot of them), worn by Croatian national folklore dance ensemble Lado. As a reference for this drawing, I used a photograph from Lado's official catalog. The medium is coloured pencils on papers.

Zdravo svima!

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT LADO, QUOTED FROM THEIR OFFICIAL SITE (ENGLISH VERSION)

LADO Ensemble

LADO, the National Folk Dance Ensemble of Croatia , was founded in 1949 in Zagreb as a professional national ensemble, with the aim of researching, artistically interpreting and presenting on stage the most beautiful examples of the rich traditions of Croatian music and dance.

The ensemble's 38 brilliant dancers, who are also excellent singers, can easily transform this folk dance ensemble into an impressive folk choir, while its 14 superb musicians play some fifty different traditional and classical instruments. In its repertoire, which consists of more than a hundred different choreographies and several hundred vocal, instrumental and vocal-instrumental numbers.

LADO, an archaic Slavic word, is a synonym for good, kind and nice, and is frequently used as a refrain in ancient ritual songs of north-western Croatia.

LADO represents the rich and diverse regional musical and choreographic traditions of Croatia, which is geographically situated at a crossroad of Europe in which the Mediterranean Balkan, Pannonian and Alpine influences are found in the dances, music and costumes.

LADO is often called a "Dancing Museum" because of priceless and beautiful authentic national costumes (more than 1,200 costumes) some of which are 100 years old. The ensemble also presents new, contemporary musical and choreographic works based on traditional motifs and elements.

Ladarice

Ladarice and LADO

The history of the legendary Ladarice begins in 1965. Božo Potočnik, dedicated to folk tradition and music with both his heart and soul, informally gathered a small group of female Ensemble LADO members with whom he recorded covers of traditional folk songs. One year later, brothers Zlatko and Božo Potočnik formally formed this female singing ensemble, which mainly performed as a nonet. All the singers from this group originated from and were dancers and singers in the professional Ensemble LADO, but performed independently as a group of singers in the Ladarice. In the beginning, they performed under the name Nine Young Ones, but the name was changed to Ladarice in 1968, at Božo Potočnik’s suggestion. On the wings of Božo’s incredible energy and his thorough his understanding of the iconic beauty of folk music and composition, Ladarice breathed new life into many folk songs and customs with their melodic voices and unique vocal talents. They impressed audiences in Croatia and abroad with their impressive live acts and many of their performances recorded for radio and television, expressing through each performance their profound love of Croatian folk art and tradition.

The most prominent voices

Even though the members of the nonet occasionally changed with time, the recognizable sound of Ladarice was marked by the distinctive voices of Anđela Potočnik, Ana Kelin, Antonija Precca, Vjekoslava Bauer, Nevenka Šokčić, Mira Tunuković, Mira Šulina, Đurđica Šuster, Jadranka Gračanin-Putnik, Jelena Andrijanić, Slavica Košutić, Katica Petričević, Morena Kovač, Branka Krsnik, Gabrijela Zalepugin, Milena Vučković and Ljiljana-Janja Ivančan.

In 1998, Ladarice celebrated their 30th anniversary with a concert held at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, and performed together on several more occasions until 2003. It is impossible to put in words their enormous contribution to the preservation of Croatian folk songs and heritage, but it remains extremely valuable and important to this day - in every possible sense!

Unification of Ladarice and LADO

Due to their similar names, but also since all members of Ladarice were also the members of Ensemble LADO, the audience often confused the two. However, the formal and legal unification of Ladarice and Ensemble LADO transpired in 2008, initiated by Ivan Ivančan Jr., with the approval of Božo Potočnik, who has always remained faithful to LADO. With their appearance at the 43rd Festival of Kajkavian Songs in Krapina, Ladarice officially became part of Ensemble LADO. Today’s Ladarice are dedicated to living up to and continuing the work of their legendary predecessors.

Singing traditions of Southern Croatian

Lado Vocalists is the name of the singing group in which male singers/dancers from Ensemble LADO perform in the characteristic manner of the singing traditions of Southern Croatian. The Vocalists began its work in September 2002, as an idea of Ivan Ivančan Jr., LADO’s artistic director at the time. The main goal was to introduce the singers with different styles and genres specific to this area, which is different from the accustomed style of singing that the men in LADO performed, which was mostly Northern Croatian music traditions. Liturgical singing and klapa singing, two complementary vocal-instrumental styles form the basis of the Lado Vocalists repertoire. Until today, the performers have mastered the techniques and styles of singing, vocal arrangements, and singing ‘formulas’ of individual parts (bass, baritone).

Non-standard distribution of signers

Compared to numerous singing ensembles of this type, the Vocalists differ in its non-standard distribution of signers. The ensemble is positioned in a semi-circle, into ‘two wings,’ where distinguished singers of lead parts (tenors) are placed on the outer ends, and the lowest parts (basses) are placed in the central position. Such distribution, where two singers lead the singing (responsorial singing) is a typical method of performing liturgical folk songs in Dalmatia. In singing klapa songs, this method creates an impression of a competition between two singing groups, different in timbre and temperament, which culminates in joint singing of all performers.

LADO Orchestra

Lado Orchestra consists of fourteen musicians, all of whom are multi-instrumentalists as they play almost all the traditional instruments that exist in Croatian culture. During a single concert, the Lado Orchestra musicians effortlessly transform from a string orchestra with a dulcimer (guci, pilari, jegeduši, mužikaši), common in Northwestern Croatia, into a tamburitza ensemble, common in northeastern plains. It is important to note that, out of several different tamburitza systems, our musicians use the oldest - the so-called farkaš’ and the most modern - srijem. Both systems are often combined with violins and a dulcimer.

When presenting the musical traditions of parts of the Adriatic, the musicians perform as a mandolin ensemble, only to be able to transition into a type of band called bandist. This bandist type of band is an ensemble of brass musicians from Northwestern Croatia. Our orchestra’s musicians also play other traditional instruments. Woodwind instruments represented are the sopele from the Island of Krk, Istrian roženiceciganjske from Banovina, bagpipes from Slavonia and Baranja, dude from Podravina and Bilogora, Istrian mišnjice, šurlice and vidalicemih from Lika, Dalmatian and Herzegovinian diple and a variety of dvojnice, diplice, jedinke, ocarinas and strančice. In addition to the tamburitza, other string instruments used are the Slavonian samica, Lika’s dangubica, Kordun’s kozarica and Bosnian šargija. Several musicians play the lijerica, an instrument which has accompanied dancing in many parts of Southern and Central Dalmatia, together with a small accordion called triješina or botunjera.

The orchestra is an essential element of the entire repertoire of Ensemble LADO. For more than a decade, the Lado Orchestra has organized numerous independent concerts with different programs, and has published three records.

Dance program

In collaborating with numerous ethno-choreologists and choreographers over the years, an impressive repertoire of choreographies has been created. Some 100 choreographies, representing the song and dance traditions of Croatia, as well as the song and dance traditions of Croats who have lived for centuries in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vojvodina, Montenegro and beyond, make up this collection.

Throughout a season, LADO gives several full evening dance concerts during which a dozen or so choreographies are performed, and these represent various areas of the country and the wide spectrum of styles of song and dance. Our aim is to present a diverse and varied program which represents all four ethnically varied areas of Croatia which are the Alpine, Pannonian, Dinaric and Adriatic regions.

For those audiences that appreciate the art of folklore on stage, LADO also mounts full evening thematic performances, such as Na moru i kraju (At Sea and on Land), which showcases dances from the Adriatic region encompassing its islands, coastline and hinterland. Dragi naš kaj (Our Dear "Kaj") consists of songs and dances from Northern Croatia, also known as the Kajkavian Region. The repertoire titled Lipi naši škoji (Our Pretty Islands), highlights the folklore specific to the islands on the Croatian Adriatic. Šokački sastanak (Meeting of the Šokci People) showcases the musical and dance traditions from the areas of Slavonia, Baranja and Bačka.

All your comments mean a lot to me, even the criticism. Naravno da mi puno znači što ste uzeli vrijeme da nešto napišete, pa makar to bila i kritika. Per me le vostre parole sono sempre preziose anche quando si tratta di critiche.
