FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY: WINTER TO SPRING TRANSITION

Hello! How are you doing? I've been working hard writing and preparing new content for this little digital place to call my own. I have a lot of interesting projects in the making, book reviews and different articles to finish up and polish before publishing. In the meantime, I decided to share a few more simple fashion sketches and illustrations with you. Therefore, today I'm back with another FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY post. As you might know, I often post my fashion art on Friday. You could even say it is somewhat of a regular feature on my blog.  I envisioned this post to be light and easy. There will be plenty of more substantial, intellectual and even borderline academic posts in the future. In this post, we'll talk about transitional fashion.  I'll let you take a peek in my sketchbook and see a variety of my sketches. Sketchbooks are often like creative diaries. They give insight in what is happening in someone's head.

The spring has officially arrived but that doesn't mean all of can can afford to throw our coats away just yet. I live in a Mediterranean climate myself. If I still need a coat, I know that chances are you ladies living in the colder climate do too. I'm not ready to put away my favourite winter outwear and warm sweaters yet.  So, I'll share some of my tricks for transiting from Winter to Spring. For me this transition is all about wanting to embrace the new season while avoiding catching a cold. Being a resident of a Mediterranean country, I'm blessed with an abundance of sunny days. However, sunny doesn't always mean cold free. I still have to layer things up, even in sunny Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. This is how I approach transitional fashion.

Zdravo! Kako ste? Naporno sam radila pišući i pripremajući nove sadržaje za ovo malo digitalno mjesto koje mogu nazvati svojim. Imam puno zanimljivih projekata u izradi, recenzija knjiga i raznih članaka koje moram doraditi i dotjerati prije objavljivanja. U međuvremenu sam odlučila s vama podijeliti još nekoliko jednostavnih modnih skica i ilustracija.

I sama živim u mediteranskoj klimi. Ovako ja to radim.

This sketch I'm sharing is a good example of a transitional spring outfit. As for the sketch itself, it was done with watercolour pencils. I wore a dark blue shirt with a Mandarin collar but layered it with a thick black sweater dress. Knits are perfect for keeping warm. Plus, I wore statement earrings to invoke the feeling of spring. Accessories are a good way to invoke spring. More about that in a minute.

I actually love the fashion of transitional period. It's possibly the only time of the year you get away wearing a pair of winter boots with a summer dress or shorts without looking like a fashion victim. You can wear a teddy bear coat with a playsuit/romper or a nice pair of sandals with a business suit. It's a time of possibilities. Scroll down to read more about transitional fashion.

FIVE TRICKS FOR SMOOTH WINTER TO SPRING TRANSITION

1. DON'T GET RID OF YOUR SWEATERS YET

Sweaters and knits are very useful items to have during a transitional period. A sweater dress in particular is a great choice for those days when you don't want to sacrifice the warmth and comfort. You can layer your knit under a blazer (or if it is still quite cold) under a coat. You can always invoke spring by opting for cheerful colours.

PET TRIKOVA ZA UGODAN PRIJELAZ IZ ZIME U PROLJEĆE

2. COMBINE WARM AND LIGHT FABRICS, DARK AND LIGHT COLOURS

Don't be afraid to mix things up. A lot of people have a seasonal wardrobe that is darker and neutral in the colder months and lighter and vivid in the warmer months. This might not be the case for you, but if it is don't let that limit you. Don't be afraid to mix up different colours to maximize the items you have in your closet. Likewise, don't be afraid to pair thicker materials with lighter ones. Why not wear a summer skirt or a dress with a coat? Clothes are there to be worn and enjoyed, not to collect dust in the closet. There are also there to keep you warm and comfortable. Why not dress for comfort and not just for style? Wear the combination of fabrics that will keep you warm. It's all about finding the right balance.

2. KOMBINIRAJTE TOPLE I LAGANE TKANINE, TAME I SVIJETLE BOJE

3. COMBINE SPRING FOOTWEAR WITH WARM CLOTHES OR WINTER BOOTS WITH LIGHT FABRICS

Staying comfortable is often all about helping our body to maintain a normal temperature. Footwear can be a great way to do that. If you choose to reveal more skin or to wear a spring/ summer dress while it is still fresh or even cold, you can counteract that by wearing a pair of warm boots. Similarly, if you choose a warm maxi dress or anything that will keep most of you body warm, you can wear open sandals or something like that. It's all about finding balance. What is fun about transitional fashion is that it allows us to experiment.

4. MASTER LAYERING TO BECOME A FASHION PRO!

Layering is obviously very important when it comes to winter to spring transition. Often it is the only way to avoid overheating or freezing when the weather is changeable. Layering also gives us an opportunity to play with textures and styles.

4. SVLADAJTE SLOJEVITO ODJEVANJE I POSTANITE MODNI STRUČNJAK!

5. USE SPRING  AND SUMMER ACCESSORIES TO INVOKE WARMER WEATHER

The easiest way to invoke spring is by wearing spring accessories. Colourful scarves, statement necklaces and straw hats can do the trick. Colour therapy is always a good idea.

5. KORISTITE PROLJETNE I LJETNE MODNE DODATKE KAKO BISTE PRIZVALI TOPLJE VRIJEME

Proljeće ćete najlakše prizvati nošenjem proljetnih dodataka. Šareni šalovi, statement ogrlice i slamnati šeširi mogu učiniti trik. Terapija bojama je uvijek dobra ideja.

  1. Yes as much as we would like, I don't think most us can abandon our coats yet especially during the early days of spring. Your tips are practical and easy to execute. I agree that layering is key especially during the transitional seasons when the weather can be quite different depending on the time of day. We had a day earlier this week in NY where it felt like winter in the morning and was almost summer-like by the early evening. The outfits you show are all good choices that are stylish and weather appropriate.

  3. Love that design you made from your self portrait. Love the hair! Yes, many cold windy days here. Great to have those boots, sweaters and jackets. Lovely Friday post! Adoring your designs. So glad you are ready to post more 🌸🌸🌸

  4. Such wonderful designs! Thanks so much for your inspiration! Love the models hair the most! But I have always liked hair when doing my own drawing. I must admit I'm not good with faces. I'm glad you are back and have so many projects in the works. Its great to see your post

  6. I found myself nodding as I read each of your tips, Ivana! Today, I'm wearing what most people would classify as a spring skirt (my rainbow one), with wooly grey winter boots, and a grey sweater, adding bright pops with my outerwear and accessories (pink and yellow) to brighten things up.

I love seeing glimpses into your sketchbook - your illustrations are awesome! I like the lead one of you with your hair in braids - those earrings are fabulous! - and many of the others too.

I always enjoy this "shoulder" season, when you can layer up and play with clothes a bit more, mixing colour and building layers for both warmth and visual interest! Great post!

Have a lovely weekend, my dear friend!

  7. I loved this peek into your sketchbook, Ivana! Both your fashion illustrations and your outfits are a joy to behold. I'm still firmly embracing my Winter wardrobe, incorporating jumpers and coats into my transitional outfits. We still have frosty mornings warming up to nearly 20°C during the day, which isn't easy to get dressed for. Also, colder temperatures have been forecasted again for next week, so I'm not about to wear my Spring/Summer wardrobe just yet! xxx

  8. These are great tips! It's pretty humid where I live and the weather has been all over the place. I haven't put the sweaters away just yet!

  9. I do love your illustrations, especially the marvellous braided hair and Bollywood-style chandelier earrings.
Great tips. I love this time of year - its frosty in the morning but often sunbathing weather by lunchtime and the bright & sunny skies really show off blues, pink and yellows. xxx

  11. Hi,
I think that without having used the terminology of transitional fashion we ended up talking about the same thing! I think self portraits are very difficult to do, but you did it very well! Like the other illustrations, I really liked the light blue pleated dress!

  12. Hey Ivana,

Everything in this post is perfect and inspiring! First of all I am excited to see what you're working on for Moda Odaradosti, I imagine there are many interesting posts and it is always nice to stop by your site during a coffee break to get inspired.

And I totally get your point about coats, I still wear them a lot cause as you I live in the Mediterranean too and I won't probably see my knits 'till late November or even more! So let's use our coats as much as possible haha! I think the best part of spring are transitions since there are a lot of interesting fashion combinations since it is not too cold or too hot right? Thanks for these tips, I'll make sure to keep my sweaters close to me.

And these portraits are perfect, specially for the color palette in blue, green and pink that you used! It has a certain feeling of fantasy and magic.

  13. Both your sketches and your outfits are really gorgeous! I love the blue pleated dress and that beautiful brown leather coat and they look so good teamed together. I agree about not putting the jumpers away yet. I decided to just wear a light cotton shirt today. I wore a yellow lightweight raincoat on top and absolutely FROZE whilst I waited for a train for 20 mins and cycled home. My teeth were actually chattering! Jumper for me tomorrow! Proper coat too!x

All your comments mean a lot to me, even the criticism.
