FASHION ILLUSTRATION WEDNESDAY : FAUX FUR STOLE AND A VINTAGE LEATHER JACKET

 Hello, I'm back with another fashion illustration. Instead of waiting for Friday, I decided to publish it today. Maybe I will even start a new feature on my blog- Fashion illustration Wednesday. As you can see, I used a reference photograph for this fashion illustration- a photograph of one of my own outfits taken by my husband in Mostar city park. The inspiration behind this illustration is all about the texture. Having illustrated this fabulous vintage jacket last Friday, I found an old illustration of this faux fur stole. Realizing I illustrated this faux fur stole in the past, made me want to illustrate it again with the vintage leather jacket. As it happens, I wore these two items together recently (see here). So, when I found photographs of another outfit featuring this faux fur stole combined with a leather jacket and a ruffled dress, I decided to choose that look for my next illustration. That is what I did. I opted for elongated style of fashion illustration. Simply said, it is a style where you fit ten heads in the body, instead of the usual eight you use in normal illustrating.  The medium is once again watercolour pencils (Staedtler brand) on paper. THE MAKING OF THE FASHION ILLUSTRATION

I have made another collage to demonstrate  the making of this fashion illustration. From left to right, you can see the stages of my drawing and painting process.  As you can see I first sketched the general outline and silhouette, avoiding the faux fur stole area so that I don't have to delete anything there, just add the fur lines. After that I added more details, paying attention to where the light hits the ruffled, the leather jacket, boots and so on. This is not a very realistic illustration, but I do like to add details like that. Finally, I added water and took photographs of this illustration both in shade and under natural sunlight (more photographs bellow). I even placed a ring by one of my illustration to give you a sense of portions. Sometimes I do think of things. Maybe next time I use a ruler and measure things out. This time I just used a sharper. I noticed that the head I drew (I usually draw the head first) is exactly the same size as my sharpener so I used that sharper to measure the proportions. In the collage bellow and the one above featuring my own photographed outfit, I made the illustration on the left wider by editing so it would fit the real outfit better- but on the right you can still see the original.

COMPARISON WITH A SIMILAR ILLUSTRATION I DID LAST FRIDAY

I included two photographs of my sketchbook in this post to show you the difference in proportions. In the illustrated outfit on the left I used only slightly elongated proportions, while on the right I used the 'ten heads' proportion ratio. I don't really have a preference between the eight or ten heads proportion. I typically decide which one to use only on the last minute. 

MANY WAYS TO DO FASHION ILLUSTRATION

When it comes to fashion illustration, I haven't done it all, but I've done and tried out a lot of things. Starting with the mediums, I have tried it all: markers, pencils, watercolour, watercolour pencils, acrylics, pens, markers and even oil paints. I've also done a lot of mixed media and collage projects over the years. I created fashion illustrations with the helps of scarps, dried and fresh flowers and pretty much anything I could get my hands on. I have illustrated runaway looks by both famous and less known designer, fashion bloggers and inspiring individuals. I was never afraid to experiment and so far I have created a ton of fashion illustrations, sketches, doodles and even some fashion paintings. I'm always looking for ways to develop my style and drawing skills.

WHY REFERENCE IS IMPORTANT?- HERE

Is reference important? Should I drew with a reference or from imagination? My answer would be that you should do both. When I wrote about ten ways to improve your fashion illustration skills, both drawing with and without reference made my list of tips.  I said that drawing with reference is important because it not only teaches you how to draw what you see but it also teaches you to look and pay attention to details. Similarly, drawing without a reference is important because it teaches you to see with your mind's eye.  Both is important to challenge yourself. Sometimes you can combine both, as I did with the illustration bellow.

ABOUT THE OUTFIT- HOW I WORE IT BEFORE?

This outfit is almost the same as this outfit (minus one skirt I used for additional layering). You may find all the links for those fashion items in that post. When I say links, I mean links to previous ways I wore those fashion items. The only two different items are a pair of caramel boots and a vintage mini brown bag.
