FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY: SPRING IN MY SKETCHBOOKS

Hello dear readers! Today it's time for another post in my FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY series (read the last one here). Today you'll have an opportunity to see a couple of my new fashion illustrations. One of them was drawn with reference and the other illustrations are from my imagination. The medium for all them is watercolour pencils on (sketchbook) paper. The sketchbook paper I was using is not really meant for watercolours but I think I got away with it.   Let's get started, shall we?

FROM MY MINI SKETCHBOOK: A GREEN DRESS ILLUSTRATION AND A PORTRAIT
First I'm going to show you two illustrations from my smallest sketchbook. Bellow you can see both of them: 1) an illustration of a green dress paired with a pink bag and heels and 2) a portrait of a girl in a green top. So, both of them are about green spring vibes really. If I recall well, I sketched both of them yesterday. They are quite small and not very detailed so I didn't spend much time on them. Sometimes it is nice to be able to finish something more quickly. I suppose that is why I like using watercolour pencils for fashion illustrations. The watercolour pencils often allow me to work quickly. Every medium has its advantages.

As I already said, I used one of my own photographs as a reference for the whole body illustration because I wanted to get a bit creative with poses. The classical fashion illustration body poses can be boring, so it's good to look at reference to find ideas for new poses. Using movement in fashion illustration can be a nice way to show the flow of the design. The design I illustrated is one from my imagination but again similar to that old outfit of mine. I illustrated a flowing green midi dress and completed it with pink heels and a bag. I think this would make for a nice spring styling. Pink and green together always looks so fresh. You know, I do think green is such an underrated colour. I always loved wearing green in all its shades.  As for the portrait, not much to comment there. I just sketched this face for practice and then I liked it so I added more details and coloured it. Sometimes you end up with something you like and you're not even sure how you got there.

FROM MY LARGE SKETCHBOOK: 3 SPRING DESIGNS
Bellow you can see three fashion illustrations with my original designs. I sketched these in my larger sketchbook.

ILLUSTRATED OUTFIT #2: A GREEN AND BLUE POLKA DOT BLOUSE AND SKIRT.
Bellow is a matching outfit consisting of a blue blouse with green polka dots pattern and a blue skirt. The polka dot design on the skirt is made from sheer fabric. I think this would be such a pretty outfit.  Bellow you can see the sketching phases. I didn't really planned this one out or think it through.  I got the idea for the design while I was illustrating it. I started this design late yesterday and finished it early this morning. Again, it was not a very time consuming piece. The sheer part was an after-thought. It took me about half an hour to finish this fashion illustration. Just what I needed to relax after a very time-consuming seascape painting I did.

ILLUSTRATED OUTFITS #3 AND #4: A RED SHEER DRESS AND A TWO PIECE SET
Bellow you can see two outfits that are all about spring and summer vibes. The spring may be here but I'm still wearing coats and beanies, so you could say that I'm dreaming of warmer weather. I drew the red dress design first. I was careful with this one because illustrating sheer fabrics can be challenging. After this watercolour illustration dried, I remember going in with red watercolour pencils again and adding a few more layers. I'm still not sure was that a good idea or should I have left it more sheer. Never mind, it turned out alright. This one probably didn't take more than half an hour either. The same goes for the final illustration. When it comes to this one, I reached for green and blue tones again. I wanted to show that darker shades of green and blue can look great with spring styling. I think a striped pencil skirt like the one I illustrated bellow would look great with a cropped off shoulder top. What do you think? Do you like these illustrated outfit ideas?

I haven't uploaded these illustrations to my Redbubble shop yet, but I probably will soon enough. I typically edit my illustrations a little before uploading them on products for these printing online shops and I need to adapt them to fit the products which obviously takes time. Not that there is a big demand for my designs on these kind of shops, but it's good design practice for me so that is why I keep it up. These versions you will see today were not coloured digitally or anything like that. The only editing I did was to make a few collages and edit photographs of my art lighter or sharper. I'm thinking of making a proper tour of my sketchbooks in a video, so drop a comment if that is something you would like to see.

Thank you for reading and commenting. Have a lovely weekend ahead!

  11. These are all gorgeous as usual, Ivana. I particularly love the girl in a green dress with pink details>. I do agree that green is an underrated colour, and pairing green with pink is something I often do myself. I love how you replicated your pose in the photograph, it looks very natural and adds movement. I would, by the way, love to see the video you proposed! 13. Black will always be my favorite color but after that comes green. And green with pink is my favorite spring combination. Lovely paintings! Enjoy your Sunday!
