WEARING SUMMER FLORALS IN SPLIT CITY 2024
Hello dear readers and fellow bloggers! I actually decided to take another short vacation. I took a few more days off to relax before returning to work. I'm currently in Split (Croatia), going for daily swims, reading books and trying to improve my mental and physical fitness. With everything that is going on in the world, I really needed a mental break.
Yesterday I shopped at a nearby second-hand shop where they sell clothes by kilogram. I bought about two kilos of clothes. All for 9 euros and 60 cents, not bad. I went there because I had to buy white shirts for work and I ended up buying 15 items. Now I have all the shirts I need!
Do you sometimes feel like there are two kinds of people, those who brag how much they paid for something and those who brag how little they paid? Maybe there is also the third, who do neither of these things. Either way, what matters is that you do what makes sense to you.
Anyway, bought some other things as well, including this floral dress that didn't come with a label. I paired it with black Borosana sandals from an iconic Croatian brand Borovo, big sunglasses and a mini beige bag. I felt fantastic wearing this!
SUMMER 2024: WHEN THE SUN SETS IN SPLIT
In my last TRAVEL WITH MY ART post, I shared one of my paintings inspired by Split city. That was not the first time I painted my home city. It has appeared in Travel With My Art series a couple of times.

Why do location and fashion illustrating often go hand in hand? I found myself asking that question today. I love exploring all aspects of fashion illustration, because well it's something I'm passionate about, and I've pretty much always been into it. Seriously, my elementary schoolbooks are filled with fashion illustrations. Anyhow, as of late, I find myself wanting to make fashion illustrations that will be as much about the location as about the outfit. I know I'm not the only one. There are many fashion illustrators out there who do location illustrating as well. I'm not sure what is the secret connection, but location art sure gets along with fashion art. Inner design and architecture are often a part of fashion illustrations as well.
Floral design history takes us all the way back to Ancient Egypt, where designs included order, simplicity and repetition of a particular pattern, with specific flowers having special meanings, such as the lotus blossom which was considered sacred. In Greek and Roman times, real flowers were used to decorate clothing through bouquets, wreaths, garlands and brooches which would add a scented flourish for any occasion.
It wasn’t until the late-medieval period that we started to see floral design included on fabrics. This can largely be attributed to China in the twelfth century, when embroidered fabrics showing beautiful flowers and scenes of nature were used for clothing. This trend swept through Middle Eastern and Asian countries, and thanks to the Silk Road, made its way into Europe via Italian merchants.
In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Italian cities like Venice and Florence were renowned for their sumptuous velvet fabrics that incorporated gold and silver threads in large floral patterns, inspired by the fabrics imported from the Ottoman Empire.
These beautiful fabrics, along with embroidered silks made their way to France where, at the court of Louis XIV, superintendent of finance Jean-Baptiste Colbert pushed forward a plan to promote the new French embroidered silks inspired from those traded by Italian merchants. These silks made their way to England, however the designers here based their designs on botanical specimens and engravings....

Have you been reading anything interesting lately? I have, but I'll save the details for the next review. I read a few short stories by Maugham. Some of them were quite bleak, but I enjoyed them all. I also read some stories by Ursula K. Le Guin. At the moment, I'm reading a novel Playing God by Sarah Zettel. So far, so good! It's an interesting read for sure.

DeleteThe pictures are beautiful. I'm glad you're back in Split, your hometown :) I absolutely agree with you that it's better to buy 15 things for 9 euros than 1 thing for 15 euros 😁 If someone wants to waste their money just because something is heavily advertised to the media - go ahead... We say - a tax on fools hahaha😂 I wish you a pleasant holiday dear Ivana
ReplyDeleteThank you dear Leone on your eloquent comment!

DeleteHello, Ivana! I'm a little envious of your holidays in Split, because unfortunately I've already returned from the sea. Croatia is a beautiful and warm country - I was there. You also look great in this lovely floral dress - very graceful and feminine. Kind regards! Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear you enjoyed Croatia!

ReplyDeleteYou too!
DeleteSo great to see your fashion girls! So lovely how you designed the dressed. And floral too! Such great inspiration from this lovely summer dress. Such soothing colors! I love the backdrop for the photos too. So inspiring! Adoring your post ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for reading! Thank you for your comment! Our storm (80 to 100 mile winds in a landlock state) earlier this month left a lot without power and a close family member did end up in the ER. He is fit so it was a shock to see how sick he got. It is times like those where a family really has to work together...and of course, stay hydrated. 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈 All the best to your wonderful blog.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about that!
DeleteStorms are stressful!
Beautiful dress! You look amazing in it! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOlá, amiga Ivana
ReplyDeleteMuito obrigada, pela visita gentis palavras no meu cantinho.
Também é grande prazer a tua visita e simpáticos comentários.
Fazes muito bem fazer umas curtas férias. É sempre bom relaxar e recuperar energias.
Beijinhos e feliz semana.
Mário Margaride
Obrigada. Thank you Mario!

ReplyDeleteYour dress is so pretty and your illustrations are stunning! xxx
Indeed, a break is a must sometimes.
DeleteI'm surprised you bought so many clothes for so little, it really was a bargain! 2 kilos of clothes, that's a funny way to sell clothes! The floral dress is beautiful and looks like it was made just for you! I saw photos of Split in a travel agency and it's a beautiful city, you did well to extend your holiday! I always get depressed at this time of year! I love your drawings, beautiful! I think they went very well with your dress and even gave it an aura of sophistication that it wouldn't have had without your beautiful illustrations. I love it when a post adds value to my outfits! You look beautiful with your black hair! Have a great week on holiday!
ReplyDeleteI love this second-hand shop. :) In fact, all the second-hand shops in Split sells by kilogram. It's the perfect place to buy scarves and light items...Such items are a dime a dozen.
DeleteThe illustrations are amazing!
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous.
Thanks dear!
DeleteBom dia. Uma excelente quarta-feira. As fotos ficaram ótimas, minha querida amiga Ivana.
ReplyDeleteThank you dear Luiz on your comment!
DeleteHow wonderful to have a few days off, I would really like that too, because my routine has been quite tiring :(
ReplyDeleteI've never been to a store that sells clothes by the kilo, but it must be really cool!
I love your looks and your drawings below. Very beautiful! <3

It's pretty cool. Thank you dear!
DeleteWhat a lovely break you had - and what deals on your shopping by weight! I record my prices for posterity, so that I can figure out my cost-per-wear, but sometimes I just have to squeal over a bargain! Both of your dresses are incredible lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sheila! I learned counting cost-per-wear on your and other blogs. It would never occur to me on my own, but it's such a great concept.
DeleteLovely dress!
