URBAN VS. COUNTRY STYLE (GORANCI VILLAGE VS. MOSTAR CITY OUTFITS)

Hello readers! In this post, I'll show you three outfits I have worn in April.  It's urban versus country style sort of post. One of these outfits I wore for a visit to Goranci village and two of them I wore in Mostar city. So, let's get started. Can you guess which outfit I wore in the country and which two outfits I wore in the city? What comes to your mind when it comes to country chic? Is the same kind of outfit you would wear in the city? How would you define urban chic? Are urban and country chic different? If yes, in what ways are they different? Does your style of dressing depends on the location or not? Do you think people in the cities dress more stylishly than people living in the country or is it the other way around? Is there such a thing as country chic? If yes, what does it exactly mean?

Nowadays, we tend to predominately associate the term 'country chic' with either Western (cowboy) chic or classical English (British) country chic. Naturally, this term can be used with other styles that make us think of outdoors or being in the country. When it comes to these two country styles, there are definitely some variations (subgroups) within themselves, but perhaps we could say that Western chic would be closer to what we define as casual clothing. Generally speaking, English country chic includes more tailored pieces (for example blazers) while Western chic is more loose and comfortable in terms of tailoring. Would it be fair to say that one has more of an upper class connotation and the other more bohemian and/or working class connotations? Naturally, just because people live in the country, it doesn't imply they wear either of these two country styles. I'm just talking about general perception here.

Now, when it comes to urban chic, things seem to get more complicated. When talking about urban fashion, one can think of a great variety of outfits. Urban fashion can be interpreted differently by a CEO or a teenager. People living in urban areas don't necessarily have a similar style of dressing. Urban style can even be interpreted differently by a same person.  Imagine someone wearing a suit (or just an office friendly look) to their 9 to 5 job and changing into a punk rock outfit later in the night.  Is urban chic generally more or less casual than country chic? In fact, sometimes it is not easy to answer these kind of questions. We might use these terms in different contexts and hence they can carry different meanings. Style is really a more complex topics than it seems a first. Often we generalize without really digging under the surface.

I think nowadays people living in the city and in the country don't dress that differently. It is perhaps true that in the older days people in the city dressed differently than those living in the country or rural areas, but these style borders are no longer as noticeable. Urban fashion is growing more casual by the day. Sure, in the business areas of a town, you'll always see people wearing suits or other office appropriate outfits but that's just work wear, it doesn't reflect someone's personal sense of style. Moreover, not every town or city has a strict business areas, in some towns the general style is quite relaxed and casual, while in others it could be more dressed up or posh.

Similarly, there are different kind of villages. Some villages are small while some are quite populated and big. Some villages have more fancy restaurants than some towns. It is all really relative. Both in cities and in villages, you can find individuals whose personal style leans more towards the casual style and those who like more dressed up or unique styles.

Our style can depends on whether we are visiting a town or a village, but maybe it comes down to the specific occasion we are dressing for. For example, a city dweller might visit the country looking for things that one lacks in a city such as hiking tracks and nature in general. Most urban people flock to villages to escape the urban jungle, so they often wear casual outfits just so they could be more comfortable. They dress for being outdoors because that's what they are looking for. a chance to spend time in the open. That is the logic I follow when I dress for a visit to the country most of the time, but not always. It really depends on the occasion, doesn't it?

Similarly, someone living in the country can choose a more casual outfit when visiting a city if they plan to do a lot sightseeing and walking. So, perhaps it is not that people dress differently in the country and in the city (at least not anymore). It is more that they dress differently for different occasions. It could be argued that perhaps there is some difference between the bigger and smaller towns and cities. One would for example, typically find more subcultures (subgroups) and witness more alternative styles in a bigger city. However, in today's globalized world, one wouldn't be surprised to find alternative dressing styles or subcultures anywhere anymore. In some ways, fashion is becoming more democratic, in others more uniform. The widely spread global casual style is becoming to look increasingly uniform. I suppose there are pros and cons when it comes to how liberal and open to interpretation fashion is nowadays. The clear border between rural and urban dressing style has perhaps disappeared. Still, we use these terms such as 'urban chic' and 'country chic' to describe different styles. They do have certain meanings, but as always when it comes to language, any word depends on the context, but let's get back to the main subject of this post and that would be: my outfits.

OUTFITS 1&2- MOSTAR CITY

I have worn heels in both of these outfits. That's one of the advantages of dressing in the city, you can wear as a high heel as you like.  I suppose you can wear heels in the country as well, as long as there are some good pathways. Speaking of that, not every city has ideal pavements, sidewalks and orderly streets. You're sometimes more likely to ruin your shoes walking in the city (at least in my experience). Still, I guess that I wear heels in Mostar often enough.

OUTFIT NUMBER #1
THE CAMEL COAT (a gift from hubby)- WORN HERE
THE OLIVE BLAZER (no name, old) - WORN HERE
DIY NECKLACE (recycled leather)- WORN HERE
FLORAL SKIRT (FASHION HOUSE EDI)- WORN HERE
LEOPARD HEELS (no name)- SEE 17 WAYS TO WEAR HERE. Most recently worn in my last post.

This first outfit is something I wore for a lunch date with my husband. As I said in many a blog posts this Spring, you have to dress for the weather. If the Spring proves as fresh as Autumn or as cold as Winter, you simply have to dress for the weather. I did like the colour palette in this look. Perhaps it's a bit dark for Spring, but at least there is some flora print to invoke it. I like the combination of camel and olive green. Moreover, I have just realized that this is not the first time I have paired this skirt with this blazer. I think this is the only 'no button' blazer I own and I wear it a lot. Should I invest into another on? Below you can see outfit details for another recent outfit with this skirt. Instead of an olive blazer, I paired the skirt with a green tartan puffer jacket.

adore. There's a lot to see and do in Mostar.

I wore this all denim look for a weekend visit to Goranci.  Perhaps I was inspired by the Spring denim trend. We had a lovely time and visited some really friendly horses. We've been making plans to join a riding school in Goranci. I'll keep you posted about that. Even if your don't manage to find time for the riding school, spending time with these beautiful horses is always a great idea.

  3. Ah I guessed the denim outfit with the jeans as your country look but I think that outfit would look equally stylish in an urban environment. I agree with you that there is less of a differentiation between how people dress in the city or the country. I guess all depends on what they might be doing however. Your urban outfits are lovely as well.

  5. Denim is always a weekend favorite, but as the days get warmer and the farmer's markets are in full swing I love those sleeveless dresses and lite sweaters. But as always, I like comfortable shoes where-ever I go. Lovely, coats you have. Awesome skirt in this post too! Thanks so much for this festive post. As we become more global, I think it all blends together.

  6. I love how you switch it up. Great to wear jeans especially in the country and boots too. Especially, to be ready for adventure. Some great date outfits you have here, as well! I'm afraid, I have turned to more of those athletic type leggings with the handy side pockets for the phone. I see more and more who come to the library in this kind of gear. More of the dress up people these days gathering research.. in their highest of heels are men in dresses. You just never know what you might see in the library.

  7. Except for when I do some serious hiking and the weather's not all that, I do not really differentiate between what I'm wearing in the city or in the country. I might change up my footwear, though, even if I'm hardly ever wearing heels now.
My favourite outfit is the one you wore for lunch in Mostar with your husband. And what an amazing view from the restaurant! xxx

  8. I always think of country wear as being waxed jackets, tweed, Wellington boots and cable knit jumpers and city wear as pinstripes, tailoring and shiny shoes. I dress like me so stand out like a sore thumb wherever I go!
All your outfits look fantastic! xxx

  10. I would describe those two country styles as "equestrian" and "cowgirl" (heh) and they are two looks I gravitate towards. However, I tend to base my outfits on how much walking I'll be doing, whether I'll be outside, standing vs. sitting, and the weather - more those than the actual environment.

Great outfits, Ivana! I have a sleeveless coat that is buttonless - it's so handy!

  15. Dear Ivana,
I can tell from the shoes alone what your country style and what your city chic is :-DD You look good in both styles; the rural look seems more comfortable to me.
I think you know that I prefer comfortable looks for myself - although I prefer to wear dresses or skirts for "urban" activities like cinema, concerts, going out to eat, and prefer pants in nature. But sometimes it's the other way around ;-)) My shoes are comfortable both in the city and in the country, but for rural activities they are often more rustic (hiking shoes, walking shoes...)
All the best and Happy May, Traude

  17. These are both great outfits! I like your city style and the fun double denim country style :) I tend to just dress causally most of the time, with working from home thanks to the pandemic, and I don't really change what I wear if I do go out into the country - on a fun little hike with the kids it's pretty much what I'd wear for the regular school run, haha!

Hope that you are having a great week :)

  19. Hi,
I live in a small village and I don't dress like a cowgirl or country chic. But people don't dress as stylishly as I do, it's a fact. With the globalization of fashion we can find these styles in the city, they just need to be a trend!! I really like your last photo. I like your more sophisticated looks in the city and with high heels, oh how I wish I could wear them!
