TWO NEW SEASCAPES: WATERCOLOUR PENCIL ON PAPER (JELSA, ISLAND HVAR)

Today I'll show you two new landscape paintings I sketched while lounging on a beach in Jelsa (island Hvar, Croatia) and finished when I got back home. One of these paintings is more detailed while the other is a  more a sketch. When I finished the first one, my husband asked me why I don't do something with less details so I did another one. The view on these paintings is slightly different. They both depict the same place, but the perspective is different. On the first painting only Brac island is visible in the distance (i.e. background) while on the other you can also see mountain Biokovo and Croatian coastline in the distance. That is because my perspective was different while I was sketching. That is what I love about Croatia. You can move just twenty  meters and you'll get a  totally different perspective and panorama. Isn't that amazing? The medium for both of these seascapes is watercolour pencil on mixed art media paper (same brands that were linked in my recent posts). I sketched the first one while I was sipping coffee in Tirkiz bar in Jelsa overlooking Vitarnja and the second one on the beach next to the bar. Scroll down to see and read more as well as to see my work in process photography.

Bellow you can see the first painting I made. I called it Dance of the Sea because I focused a lot on the waves. Besides trying to depict waves, I also focused on reflections. The pine trees thrown a green reflection onto the sea so this little bay is a mixture of beautiful shades of blue and green. You cab see all kind of shades when looking at the sea here here: from azure to emerald.
The most challenging part of this painting was drawing the waves (drawing because I first sketched with watercolour pencil). When you're working with watercolour pencils, the process is a bit different- at least how I did it. I completed a drawing sketch before I applied any water so the sketch was fully completed. When you work with watercolour pencils you can also go back and forth but this is how I did this particular one. I painted waves in the past (see this acrylic painting of waves and these paintings). I actually watched video tutorials on how to paint waves- it can be tricky.
Another thing I worked on were the pine trees. I'm not sure how well I did there. Maybe there is some room for improvement. If my work obligations permit me, I will definitely work more on sketching and illustrating in the future. Plus, I want to get my acrylic paintings out of the bag. I do have so many ideas for future art projects in my head, but finding the greenery to actually do them, that can be tricky. Anyhow, scroll down to see the finished watercolour pencil drawing as well as the water application (that I did when I got back home).

MY ILLUSTRATIONS AVAILABLE ON TOTE BAGS
I rarely sell originals or take commissions, but you can buy most of my illustrations and paintings (in forms of  art prints  but also prints on various products, for example this fashion illustration tote bag ) here: IvanaKada.redbubble.com.  I also sell on arthausI'm not sure will I keep uploading my art on these sites, it's a time consuming process and if you're not selling, it's a bit waste of time, isn't it? Maybe I'll focus more on making art and less on sharing it in the future. I will also have to cut out some of my activities to make more time for art. #modaodaradosti #watercolour
Moving onto the second landscape painting I'm sharing with you today. This one is more a sketch and by that I mean there are less details. If you have a look at the photographs bellow you will be able to see exactly the spot I illustrated. I called this painting A Bay With a View because I loved the view from this spot. In the background you can see islands Brac and also Croatian seaside (mountain Biokovo is also present in this drawing and I love that). Anyhow, I didn't finish this sketch on the beach because I didn't have time. Do you know that these things can be time consuming? I finished this drawing once I got back home. Then I applied water to it to turn it into a watercolour painting. What version do you prefer? The watercolour drawing or the aquarelle sketch? Let me know in the comments.

THE CATS WERE NOT IMPRESSED WITH MY NEW ART PROJECTS
Yesterday afternoon I took this paintings out in the sun at my terrace so I could snap some photographs. Our cats rushed to see what I was about. I call them our cats because I feed them and they hang out in front of my door 24/7 but they belong to our landlady. Anyhow, the cats were not impressed. They checked out my art but I couldn't figure out what it was about. I think they were just disappointed it isn't food. What do you think?

THE MORE DETAILED SEASCAPE VERSUS A MORE SKETCHED ONE
What painting do you prefer? The more detailed one or the sketched one? It would be interesting to take this same motif and turn it into a acrylic painting. That's an art project I'd love to try. I would be also fun to do a drawing of this place, maybe with coloured pencils? Playing with watercolour pencils more is also an idea. Perhaps I should try adding less water and keep it more drawing-like? So many ideas, so little time.  Anyhow, that would be all for today. Have a nice Sunday!

As from today, my art is also available for purchase on Fine Art America  but only a few paintings because I just opened my account there. For now, most of my prints are still available on Redbubble (about 150 different paintings and illustrations). Thank you for reading and commenting. Take care!

  18. Oh I LOVE the watercolours! They look beautiful. I THOUGHT I liked the more detailed one more but when you put them together in that last picture, it changed my mind and now I am undecided. I do so love water paintings. I really like watercolour pencils but I am not the best at using them- I did like when I used them on my Klimt-inspired/copied piece though. I should take some art classes.

  22. Hello Ivana
I prefer the most sketched drawing!
When we are involved in a task that gives us a lot of pleasure we do not even notice the time that has been spent on that task.
You are a very sensitive person, these drawings are proof of that!

  24. Hello Ivana, love that you're always keeping creative!

I hope you enjoyed your day in Jelsa, the water in this zone looks so pacific and that deep blue is so dreamy, obviously you needed to capture it in your art!

And the result is gorgeous! But I totally understand you in the part where you tell that drawing the waves is so difficult, those kind of natural details are so difficult, actually I made a drawing of the sea a few days ago for my Instagram and it was tricky. I think it has to do with the fact that natural shapes are all different and tend to change, so the best trick is to let flow the pencil or the artistic tool you're using! But your result is so good!

And the cats, ooows, they look adorable in these photos! But they need to learn more about art :)

  30. Dear Ivana, honestly, I can't decide, as I love both! Love how you brought these views with the vibrant colours to the paper and I directly can smell the see and feeling the sun on my skin during watching them! And regarding the cats: who knows, fortunately, nobody knows what cats are thinking - you can't calculate them, what I really love. Cats are not logic but the check I think more than we assume ... The cats are cute and I think they simply love you althoug they belong to your landlady!
