Painting of The Day: Inspired By Island Hvar, Croatia ( Acrylic On Canvas)

Good morning everyone! Today I'll share with you a new painting of mine. I worked on this one for a few days. For a reference, I used one of my old photographs. As you can imagine, I have a lot of photographs of island Hvar, Croatia. If you would like to see photographs of this beautiful island, I can set aside a special post for that. Today I'll share with you my painting. If you scroll down, you'll be able to see the painting process. The medium is acrylic on canvas. I'm not sure what I will do with this canvas, I'm still undecided. I need to sign it as well.

The weekend is finally here and that means what?- well, I guess it means different things to different people. Interestingly, even people who work during the weekend often have a special fondness for these two days. Ever wondered why it is so? Maybe because weekend can often feel like a little holiday. Maybe because it gives a feeling of closure to the week. It is an interesting phenomena to observe. Many people feel more relaxed during the weekend, even if it is a working weekend.  I was planning to get a lot of painting done this weekend, but now I'm not sure will I be able to find time. Life, you know.

How do you like this painting? I love painting olive trees, especially when the sea is the background. There is something magical about olive trees, the way they seem to shine with silver. No wonder this tree is a symbol of piece. The combination of olive and pine trees is something truly wonderful. It makes me think of the Mediterranean, although I'm sure that these two trees grow together in other parts of the worlds as well. There is something about the combination of these two, especially with the sea, something very dear to me. A lovely motive to depict, for sure. Back in 2014, I made a similar painting, depicting the same location, but back then I used oil paints. I gave that painting to a friend and I'm pretty sure she liked it. The location that inspired me to do both of these paintings is Zastrazisce (Zastražišće), island Hvar, Croatia. This painting depicts island Hvar but another island is visible in the distance and that would be Brac (Brač in Croatian is pronounced Brach).

I used to paint with oil paints more, now it looks like I'm switching to acrylics. I will probably get back to my oil paintings, but it might take me some time and planning. Setting aside for painting can be a real challenge sometimes.  Do you have any creative hobbies? If yes, how do you find time for them? Do you plan time for your hobbies? Or do you simply grab the opportunity when it presents itself? Since I started taking painting more seriously, sometime back in 2012, I've tried different strategies. I'm not sure which one is the best.

On another note, have you ever tried painting and listening to music at the same time? I used to do it but now I'm more into audio-books. Lately, I've been listening to audio-books while I paint. I think I already mentioned that when I shared my secrets for reading more.

I listened to Siddhartha by Herman Hesse while I was painting this one. Now, every time I look at it, I think about that book. Funny, how our memory works? Perhaps this could be used as a learning tool? I need to think about it. You can read my review of that novel here. I also wrote a review for Narcissus and Goldmund, another novel of his, you can read that one here.

Right now I'm listening to an audio version of Steppenwolf and so far, so good. I do like this novel, but not as much as two other novels by Herman Hesse that I read. A lot of people seem to prefer Steppenwolf to his other works, but I really like the novels I mentioned. Finding time to sit down and write reviews for all the books I've read in February and March seems to have become a challenge a well.

  10. I love seeing your acrylic on canvas in particular, and perhaps this is because it's a medium I've always been hopeless with, haha! It's so nice to see your scenic artwork; this spot looks ever so special and the obvious warmth seems to leap off the canvas! Great job Ivana and I hope you have a wonderful week ahead :)

  12. Dear Ivana, the painting turned out perfect you can be so proud on you! And I'm not surprised that these painting now is connected to the audio book you heard during you painted the picture - I think this is the way our brain works, the brain conntects the things together :) It is interesting what you wrote about weekends and I think it is really true. Hopefully you had some time to paint also you knew already when posting this article that your weekend seem to get busy. Happy new week!

  14. I LOVE your olive tree paintings. They both remind me of Van Gogh's style which I love. I love the twisted, curving shapes and brush strokes.

I paint in acrylics though I sometimes play with water colour and gouache. Acrylics dry quickly which I like. I don't have the patience to wait for oils to dry and I don't have the space to spread out several paintings to work on while I wait for others to dry. I like listening to classical music while I paint though most of the time I paint in silence. I prefer to be lost in the painting and something with lyrics or a podcast or audio book distracts me. Either I will not hear what I am listening to or I will not paint well because I am listening. I prefer to paint quickly and loosely so that might be why.

    1. Acrylics do dry quickly and one can also play a little more with density, by adding water and trying out different things. I like painting with watercolours but I have to learn more about this technique, about the proper paper to use and so on. I haven't tried gouache yet.

Oils are tricky that way, hard to work with them unless one has a studio or a separate room to spread them out. That might be why I don't work with them as much. I was just thinking how in the summer I might do some outdoor painting, and get back to oil painting then.

You are right that books can be distracting! Classical music is probably the best choice for painting. I sometimes listen to classical music while I read, because then anything with lyrics would be too distracting.
