NEW ART UPDATE, FIVE WATERCOLOUR PORTRAITS

Time for another art update. Lately, my life has been pretty much revolving around art. I'm very focused on improving my art skills right now. I have been working hard on making new art and illustrations. Sometimes it seems that it is all I do. When I'm not working on my art, I'm either studying new art techniques or researching the market. My efforts were not without result, though. Today I'll share with you six new watercolour portraits.  The medium for all of them is watercolour pencils on mixed media paper (from one of my sketchbooks). These portraits are mostly a product of my imagination. I did use some of my own photographs as references just so that I can challenge myself to paint a face from different angles but none of them are actual self-portraits (or at least not intended as such).  Most of these watercolour portraits are already in my redbubble shop and those that aren't there yet, will be added asap. Today's post is only in English, sorry. I feel very bad and guilty for posting only in English, but often I don't have the time or the energy to translate my posts to my other languages. I'm thinking of blogging in different languages at least one day in a week just to be more democratic and fair. In the meantime, you can translate this post by using the google translator on the left.  Scroll down to see and read more.

FIIVE NEW WATERCOLOUR PENCILS POTRAITS
These are all what I would call - quick watercolour portraits. On average, I would say, these portraits took about half an hour to make, sketching included. Some of them possibly a bit more than half an hour but they were all relatively quick. Do you remember that acrylic painting that took more than 20 hours to make? Well, after that one, I wanted to take things easy and paint something less difficult and time consuming. Honestly, that one really exhausted me and while I'm still putting in the hours, I really need something less difficult to help me retrieve my confidence and ease.

I'm a long hair girl myself, but for some reason I often paint or draw girls with a bob hairstyle. It's probably because that's one of my favourite hairstyles and I feel like it looks so elegant and timeless. It might also be because the bob cut is fun to illustrate. Bellow you can see my original  sketch I made with my watercolour pencils as well as the completed watercolour painting and an edited version. The edited versions are the two last ones- one with a white background and  the other with a yellow aura (added digitally on my computer in Paint 3D program).
watercolour pencil sketch (sorry for the quality, it was late when I took this pic)
watercolour portrait photographed under natural light (fortunately we had enough sunlight)
edited version of the illustration (Paint 3D)
another digitally retouched, painted and edited version (Paint 3D)

A GIRL IN A BLUE SWEATER NO.2  Bellow you can see another version of a girl in a blue sweater. The first photograph is my watercolour illustration shot under natural light and the second is the edited version but this time the editing was minimal. I just added some yellow aura and made the background white. As you can see, blue colour has been inspiring me lately.

LONG HAIR GIRL WITH A RED CAP (A PORTRAIT WITH CHRISTMAS VIBES) Next in line is a watercolour portrait with Christmas vibes. If I remember well, I actually didn't use any reference for this one or if I did, I forgot about it soon into the drawing. Bellow you can see the sketching. I made a fairly detailed sketch with watercolour pencils and then I added water. Did I add too much water? Possibly, but I kind of like the messy end result so I think I'll keep it this way---or not. I haven't decided yet will I go back to work on this one.

A PURPLE HAIR GIRL WITH GREEN SUNGLASSES- Another piece I made is a watercolour portrait of a girl with purple hair that is partly based on my imagination and partly on a reference photograph. I based it on one old photograph my husband took of me, where I was wearing this type of sunglasses but I wasn't really going for realism or achieving similarity. I wanted to take it easy with this series of portraits. Bellow you can see the watercolour pencil sketch and the finished version. I didn't do any editing with this one yet.

A GIRL IN A PINK FAUX FUR COAT
Finally, here is the last watercolour pencil portrait. I actually filmed making of this one but I'm not sure how to transfer video to my blog. I'll look into it some other time. I used one of my old photographs for reference but I improvised and allowed myself to return to my style that is painting  slightly elongated faces, noses and everything.

That would be all for today. As always thank you for visiting this little digital place of my own.  Take care!

  4. These are excellent, particularly the first 3. You are so good at getting the expression into their eyes, Ivana, so I struggle with the girl in the sunglasses, as she feels less vibrant because of her eyes being hidden. You are so talented - I'm really proud of you for how much you are exploring your art!

    1. Thank you Sheila. I was thinking of perhaps making the eyes visible and the sunglasses transparent but I gave up. I might do another version, though.

  11. You are most definitely on a roll, Ivana! I think doing things one is devoted to is very helpful in taking one's mind of the current situation. You've certainly got a passion which deserves to be cultivated. Five different watercolour portraits which are each equally beguiling in their own way. I love your use of colour! Thank you once again for sharing and brightening my day! xxx

  21. I really liked seeing the different stages of these- they are so cool! The first girl in blue is a dead ringer for Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor WHo. I adore her hairstyle and would really like my hair like this!
