TRAVEL WITH MY ART #13: SUCURAJ, ISLAND HVAR (CROATIA)

Hello dear readers and fellow bloggers! Today I have another TRAVEL WITH MY ART post to share with you. Once again, it's a seascape painting depicting island Hvar. What can I say? I love the Adriatic sea and island Hvar so much. It is an infinite source of inspiration for me.  Last time I shared a canvas painting of Zavala on island Hvar. The location I'm sharing today is once again island Hvar, but this time it is Sucuraj. This is actually my second painting of this place. I sold the first painting of Sucuraj but this new one is available for sale (in case everyone is interested). I often take the ferry from Drvenik to Sucuraj, so that particular landscape is engraved in my mind. I just love seeing the beautiful white stone lighting house that marks the beginning of island Hvar for me.  Some of you might remember that I spent one weekend in May on island Hvar. Well, I haven't visited island Hvar this summer yet but I painted it!

THE MEDIUM FOR THE PAINTING

The medium for Sucuraj painting I'm sharing today is acrylic paints on mixed media sketchbook paper. Both the sketchbook and the acrylics paints I used are from Royal Talens brand (not sponsored). Royal Talens is currently one of the art brands available in the Michelangelo art gallery & store in Mostar. I tried some other acrylic paints that I liked from another brand, but I cannot find them in my art store of choice. I mostly buy art supplies in this art store & gallery because that is where I took my art classes in the past and I was very happy with them. Anyhow, that is why I'm sticking with Royal Talens. I'm content enough with the acrylic paints from this brand but there is room for improvement in the packaging department.

THE MAKING OF THE PAINTING

It was more than 40 degree Celsius (plus 100 Fahrenheit)  today, so painting with acrylics was challenging. I might have to go back to oil paints this summer. You know because it is so hot, the acrylic paints start drying as soon as I get them out of the tube. Normally the quick drying speed is what I love about the acrylics but this extreme heat is making the acrylic paints dry so fast.  Sometimes they dry almost as soon as I put them on the palette. Not that I painted this all of this seascape today. I actually started painting it while on vacation in Biograd na Moru but I added some finishing touches today (not sure was it the right thing to do, but well). I'm not sure how long it took me to paint this one because I worked on it in between my canvas painting. I would say approximately four hours but I really have no idea. I'm not sure how I feel about the end result of this painting. Maybe the painting was better without all the details? Have a look at 'work in progress' photographs ( I know you love wip shots) and tell me what you think.

THE INSPIRATION FOR THE PAINTING- SUCURAJ ON ISLAND HVAR
I blogged about Sucuraj many times on my blog. Feel free to visit my other posts to learn more about this place:

ADDING THE FINISHING TOUCHES- THE FINAL LOOK OF THIS SKETCHBOOK PAINTING

Today I added the finishing touches to this painting, but to tell you the truth I'm not sure I got the sea right. I'm happy with how the lighting house and Sucuraj turned out. It is how I wanted island Hvar to look. This is not a very detailed painting (the size is about A4). I'm also happy with how Croatian coastline turned out. What I'm not so sure about is the sea. Maybe I got too carried away with colour. On the hand, I do like the vibrant colours of this one so I wouldn't say it was a miss. Anyhow, that would be the story of this painting.

Thank you so much for visiting! I'm linking this post with Mica's Week Wear Link Up (click the link to joint in the fun).

Wonderful artwork, those incredible blues I always associate with the Mediteranean and the fantastic way in which you capture the movement of the sea. You have a wonderful talent. x

  13. I love seeing your process as you create the painting, Ivana. Another excellent painting - however, I agree that the sea isn't quite right. I think it's that there is no gradation or change in the sea colour overall - it's just one big section of the same blue, when I want it to make me think of the depths or have it draw me to the island.

Have you ever heard of Emily Carr? She was a painter from my area, and she did very impressionistic but loose paintings of the local landscapes. https://www.wikiart.org/en/emily-carr

Your work reminds me of hers, and I feel like your style may evolve into a looser feel. Keep going, you're so talented! :)

    1. I did use different shades of blue but I haven't layered them well, the composition and the lines in terms of the sea just isn't right. I think the problem is partly the size. It's hard to do a graduation in colour on A4 format. I think I'll leave it as it is because I'm not sure how much paint this colour can take. It's a meant for acrylics but still...If it was a canvas, I would try to correct but maybe I can just call it a looser sketch.

I didn't know about Emily Carr. I had a look at her works at the link you sent to me - very beautiful. In particular, I like how she painted the trees.

  14. You do seascapes so brilliantly, Ivana.
This one is really enchanting - although I'm hearing you on the sea not being quite right - as my eye is drawn to that fairytale island! xxx

  16. I really like this even if you haven't captured the sea as you usually do - it's still very artistic and it looks beautiful! It's great you were still able to create despite the heat making things tricky!

Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! Hope that you are having a nice weekend :) It's a very rainy day here!

  17. It's easy to see why the Adriatic sea and Hvar are such an incredible source of inspiration for you considering there is so much natural charm and beauty in both.
