Visiting Sućuraj (Suchuray), Island Hvar: What Do You Need To Know?

Today I'm going to talk a bit about Suchuray (spelled Sućuraj in Croatian), a small touristic city and port located on island Hvar. I'm going to provide you with a bit of information about this place as well as some travel tips. Suchuray is so close to the mainland (5 km), that a ferry ride from Drvenik typically takes less than half an hour. I once vowed that I will swim this distance some day, but as I've just found out that swimming might not be good for scoliosis, so I'll need to rethink that. Anyhow, there are less than 400 inhabitants living in this town. The placement of this town is fantastic,it has a coast line on both sides of the island. Basically, the city is facing both the mainland and the the sea (since Croatia's coastline is island abundant, you can always expect the 'sea view' to include islands). Moreover, there is an abundance of sand, peddle or rocky beaches to choose from. The sea is crystal clear, so that's always nice. You can also do a one day thing, catch the ferry, and go back to the mainland the same day.

 I would definitely recommend the island experience (any island) to everyone visiting Croatia. It is up to you to decide whether or not you want to take the car with you. Like everywhere, a car will always give you more possibilities, and it is always good to consider renting a car. The ferry ticket from Drvenik to Suchuray is a lot more affordable it being, as I said, a short distance. Typically (and I'm sure this is the case everywhere) the price of the ferry ticket depends on the duration and the length of the ferry ride. You can check out my post about Drvenik here. We actually missed a ferry because there wasn't enough place, this is something to think about. If you are going with a car, make sure you park your car (get in the car line) ahead of time so that you have a guaranteed place in the ferry.

Suchuray is a town most visitors/tourist heading for this side of the island get to see, because it is one of the few ports where the ferry docks. Basically, if you want to take your car to island Hvar, you have two options. Either you catch a ferry docking at Split city and arrive to Starigrad city, or you take a ferry at Drvenik  port (check my last visit here) and arrive at Suchuray. There are catamaran rides to other cities on island Hvar, such as Hvar and Jelsa. Moreover, you can also catch a ferry from island Brach (Croatian spelling Brač) and some other places. There are a lot of ferry rides and you can also consider private charter lines. All the information should be easily available online, but if you have any questions, you can always ask me.  I'm not sure what is going on with flights to island Hvar, or whether they will be available this year. There were regular hydroplanes flights in the previous years, but I'm not sure whether that particular  company will continue providing air transport this year. Hvar island doesn't have an official airport like island Brach (Brač), but there is a small airport for smaller planes (in case you're a plane owner).

Suchuray was first inhabited by Illyrians, an ancient European tribe that has merged with the Slavic, Greek and Albanian tribes centuries ago and wasn't preserved as a separate ethnic identity and culture. In a way they are still with us, because we carry their gene code. Modern science and genetics figured that out. History being what it is, this island has often changed 'owners', that is, it belonged to different states and kingdoms, but that can be said for a lot of cities in Europe. Yes, European history is very dynamic. You know, I'm sometimes mistaken for a historian, but I actually studied languages and literature. The thing is that when you study languages and literature, you also study history. The two go hand in hand, so perhaps that is where I get my interest in history. Yes, it is quite possible that my studies increased my interest in history. Anyway, the history of this place is pretty interesting. The accommodation in Suchuray is mostly private accommodation, apartments, holiday boarding houses and so on. There are plenty of restaurants, taverns and shops to choose from. You won't find any five stars hotels though, so if there is what you're looking for, drive on until you get to Jelsa, Starigrad or Hvar city. Now, about the outfit.
