A FLORAL DRESS FOR SIGHTSEEING SPLIT CITY (ONE OF TOP CROATIAN DESTINATIONS)

Split city, the cultural and administrative centre of Dalmatia region is one of the most popular European tourist destinations. This beautiful city, nicknamed the pearl of the sea, is a fascinating mix of the old and the new. Originally build as a summer residence for an ancient Roman emperor Diocletian, this historical city has had an eventful and interesting history but nowadays Split is very much a modern town and one that is full of life. Can you even imagine summer in Croatia without paying Split city a visit? I know that I can't. Do you remember my post about HOW TO FIND THE BEST PHOTO WORTHY DESTINATIONS IN SPLIT CITY?  If you do, then you probably remember how photogenic and visually stunning this coastal city truly is. You can check out some of my previous summer visits to this gorgeous historical city here, here, here and here

CHURCH AND MONASTERY OF SAINT FRANCIS

I blogged about different sights to see in Split city quite a few times, but I don't think I mentioned the catholic church of saint Francis before.  It is located on the western side of Riva (the famous promenade), quite close to the historical city fountain (another cool spot to visit). You can see the church behind me in the photographs below. The church and the monastery of Saint Francis were both build on an early Christian site. Prior to the construction of Saint Francis' church, there had been a smaller church and grave of saint Felix (an early Christian martyr) located here. The little brothers (i.e. monks of order of Saint Francis) have inhabited this church and monastery since the thirteenth century. The monastery's library boosts of about 3000 books, some of them dating back to the sixteenth century.  The church and the monastery guard some valuable historical art as well as the graves of prominent Split citizens, such as the father of Croatian literature Marko Marulich.

MARMONT'S STREET (MARMONTOVA STREET )

Maront's street is definitely a street worthy of a visit. Maront's street (also known as Marmontova) is the main pedestrian street in the old city centre. It was named after the French general Marmont who looked after the infrastructural development of the Split city at the time when Split was occupied by Napoleon's army and in the following period of the French rule. The street is quite wide, neat and often vibrant with life. I've seen quite a few street performers and artists there, probably because it's typically packed with people. Marmont's street has several attractions of its own including a French culture and language centre, several historical buildings, many shops and a fish market. It is also worth mentioning that the oldest cinema in Split is very near to Marmont's street, being places just a few meters from it (all you need to do is to take a turn right). Marmont's street is sometimes called the pulse of the city,  as it is one of the best known streets in the city.

YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH A FLORAL DRESS IN THE SUMMER

What did I wear for strolling and sightseeing Split city? You know, recently I have read that for a clothing item to be sustainable, you need to wear it at least thirty times. I think there are quite a few items in my closet that got even more wear than that, so I'm definitely on the right track when it comes to shopping my closet. If I were to study this outfit in that (30 wears per an item) light, I definitely could call it sustainable. The only new thing in this styling are the sandals I bought in spring, but I have already gotten a lot of wear out of them (I'm sure I'll wear them more than thirty times before the summer ends). The outfit itself is pretty simple and simply perfect for summer exploring tours. I wore a floral dress I have had for ages (I wore it previously herehereherehere here here here here ) a DIY necklace I have worn just as much (made from vintage recycled faux leather), a straw bag I wore many times (proof herehere here here) and art sandals I have already worn several times (proof here herehere and here). I feel like having a fashion blog is really helpful when it comes to maximizing our wardrobe because it is like a virtual closet at our disposal. Do you agree?

MATEJUŠKA PORT IN SPLIT CITY

Matejuška has been a small port for local fishermen for centuries. This is where the fishermen from historical neighbourhoods such as Veli Varoš kept their boats. This iconic traditional oasis is also a place of socialization. That is why the city of Split has done its best to preserve Matejuška in its original form. Approximately 14 million kunas were spend in preservation of this small port that now has a small park area as well. You can still see small fishing boats with their traditional nets here. It is still the meeting place for locals (and tourists) as well. Besides being an authentic location, Matejuška also offers a nice view of Split city itself. I would definitely recommend visiting it. Why stop there, though? If you continue your stroll and pass by Matejuška, you can also walk in and see the newer port: a luxurious modern marine and the so called 'new coast' where you can enjoy drinks at trendy bars with views of yachts and Split city panorama.

ACI MARINA SPLIT
We are nearing the end of our visit to Split city (and this post) for today. When we were there last, we actually finished our Split city tour walk with a visit to ACI marina. How do you get here? You can easily walk to it, as it is not far from the city centre. As a boat lover, I do enjoy hanging out in marinas. These days marinas are not just a place to dock boats, they are also becoming destinations in their own right. I like all the marinas in Split city, but it's been a while since I've been to this marina hence I wanted to stroll around and see what's new.  My brother told me that Croatian nautical tourism accounts for about the fourth of world's nautical tourism and I was really fascinated by that. I knew that nautical tourism was a thing here, but I didn't know it was that big! Twenty five percent of world's nautical tourism? How amazing is that? Anyhow, I did enjoy my visit to ACI Marina. Scroll down for more photographs...and with that we're going to a wrap up this travel post. Today I focused on a few locations in the city centre, but I have more posts coming up. If you want to learn more about Split city, this little blog of mine is a good place to start.

As always, thank you for reading and visiting! Have a great weekend everyone.

  2. You look stunning in this dress!! I love the floral print of this dress, so perfect for summer and I like the way you paired it with sandals and a straw bag. This is such a beautiful place full of history and a stunning view of Marina. I totally agree with you about buying less and re-wearing clothes. I also try to buy more sustainable material. I think there so many things we can do to be more sustainable. Also, being aware and making small changes are really helpful for the environment.

  5. I'm totally on the same page as you – a blog is a great way to maximize you wardrobe! I find it also makes me be more creative with the items I already have so I can continue to show new outfits and content without buying a whole new wardrobe every month ;) Floral dresses are one of my favorite things to wear in summer, or floral anything I should say. They're very feminine and effortless. The Split City also looks beautiful. I love the architecture and the neutral yet bold colours of the buildings. I'll be putting it on my places to visit :)

    1. thank you Isabella. It's great to get your feedback and hear that you also get inspired by your blog. A lot of people accuse fashion bloggers of being wasteful with clothes but I think a lot of us are actually the other way around, we're more conscious of our closets than most people. Split is a fantastic destination, perfect for lovers of history and culture.

  13. Thank you for taking us around Split City again Ivana. The city has such a vibrant spirit I can see why it's so popular with tourists. The ACI marina in particular really stands out to me. I've been spending more time down by the river in NYC so I'm appreciating the waterfront more. Your floral dress is so fresh and summery and perfect for touring around town. Those sandals look so comfy. I love what you said about wearing them for 30 times this summer :)

All your comments mean a lot to me, even the criticism. Naravno da mi puno znači što ste uzeli vrijeme da nešto napišete, pa makar to bila i kritika. Per me le vostre parole sono sempre preziose anche quando si tratta di critiche.
