PROTECTED AREAS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA: NATURE PARKS HUTOVO BLATO AND BLIDINJE
According to my research, there are four national parks and three nature parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Don't hold me by my word, I'm not entirely sure is that a complete list. I did some research about protected areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that is the information I found. There are many beautiful parks in this country, but not all of them have the status of a Nature Park. Speaking of which, both National Park and Nature Park are terms used specifically for protected areas of nature. Both have to met certain standards to be awarded this title and are typically regulated by conservation laws.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NATIONAL PARK AND A NATURE PARK
National Park and Nature Park are terms that are sometimes incorrectly used as synonyms, for there is a difference between them. National park is defined as category II type of protection areas. Nature park is also a protected area, but it falls under III or IV type of protected areas. A Nature Park typically involves long term protection planning and protection, but the laws governing National Parks tend to even more strict. If you check Wikipedia (English article) for the definition of the word Nature Park, you'll see a photograph of Hutovo Blato listed as an example. Isn't that cool?
PROTECTED AREAS IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
The three Nature Parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina are: Hutovo Blato (founded in 1995), Blidnje (founded in 1995) and Bardač ( also founded in 1995). The four National parks are Sutjeska (founded in 1965), Kozara (1967), Una (2008) and Drina National Park (founded in 2017). As the title indicated, today I will focus on two nature parks: Hutovo Blato and Blidinje. The reason why I'm focusing on these two is because I have visited both of them (and more than once). So, I think I can give you a pretty good idea of what to expect and give you some ideas about what to do there. I haven't visited the third Nature Park that is to be found in the country. Once I visit it, I might blog about that too, but for now I'll stick with what I know.
NATURE PARK HUTOVO- A WETLAND WORTH A VISIT
I wrote about Hutovo Blato a number of times, so I'll leave you with photographs of my previous visits and links to my previous posts in case you want to find something out about this amazing place. These photographs will also give you a chance to see what this place looks like in spring and summer. For me, Hutovo Blato is the perfect spring destination. So, if you're thinking about visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina, make sure you stop for a visit here as well.

Boat rides are definitely a fun activity to do in Hutovo Blato. It's all about that interaction with the environment. If you like boats, its definitely something you should try. For more information about boat rides, feel free to visit my old posts. Basically, the typical boat rides aren't expensive because the cost can be split between passengers on board. Once you get to this park, you just go and ask around, there should be some boats available for a drive around. You can also pay for a private ride, but that would be a more pricey option. Best option is to split the costs among people you come by around (or come with). The boat rides I had here were such amazing experiences, I can't recommend them enough. It is also nice to feel the breeze that way because it can get very warm here in spring.

NATURE PARK BLIDINJE
I have visited nature park Blidinje three times so far and I've enjoyed each visit. I blogged about it a number of times, so not to repeated myself too much, I'll leave you with links to my old posts and photographs taken at this place. What I will stress is that this nature park is definitely one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. If you love mountains, this place is a must visit.
HOW TO GET TO NATURE PARK BLIDINJE?
HOW TO GET TO NATURE PARK BLIDINJE?
The easiest way to get there is by car. Depending on where you are coming from, you will need to take a different route. If you're visiting the Adriatic sea and/or Croatia, you should note that Blidinje is only an hour and a half drive away from the sea (but it might be more if there is heavy traffic in summer, I should add). Driving through Neretva canon is a pretty good idea, just because it is so beautiful and as such worth a visit. I do recommend driving through Neretva Canon if you get the chance but other routes are fine as well. We tried them all, but more about that some other time.

These parks sound wonderful. I love anywhere there is water. There always seems to be more wildlife to enjoy. A boat ride would be perfect on a sunny day. Park Blidinje looks amazing with the mountains and rolling greens!
ReplyDeleteThank you Val, a boat ride on a sunny day is always a good idea.
DeleteOh those divine mountain views and your GIF at Blidinje are bringing back so many memories! We crossed the border on the way to Dubrovnik from Split and I just remember that part of our roadtrip to be the most memorable and beautiful. I can't remember if it was in Croatia or both but it was mountain views and water. It was so good. I wish I could have taken photos, but I was stuck in the back seat so I couldn't get a good shot unfortunately. Such a beautiful part of the world. I can't wait to go back and see more of Eastern Europe! (One day I mean, hopefully soon)

Thank you Coco. That was probably both. There is a small part of Croatia coastline that was given to Bosnia and Herzegovina so this country would have its sea exit, so that's probably it. I hope you get to see and experience more of Eastern Europe.
DeleteThey look like such lovely places to visit! I'm hoping to get out to experience more local areas like this now that the weather is cooler - it can be a bit too much going bush walking in the middle of a summer heatwave, haha!
ReplyDeleteHope your week is off to a good start! :)
Away From The Blue
thank you Mica. Visiting the bush in summer heat doesn't like like the best idea, I hope you'll get to enjoy nature more now that the weather is more mild.

ReplyDeleteThey look amazing! I especially like the mountain views. Your photos are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThere are quite a few national parks in Canada too that are beautiful. I've only visited a few though since others are really far away and I have yet to get to them.

Yes, that is one of the things that fascinates me about big countries like Canada, USA, Russia and China (not to say anything of Australia that is both a country and a continent). The national parks there are so big! I'd love to visit them some day.
Deleteindeed!
