WHAT TO WEAR WHEN TRAVELLING IN SUMMER?

When we talk about travelling outfits, comfort is definitely something we need to consider. Everyone wants to be comfortable when travelling, right? As much as visiting a certain town or resort can be fun and relaxing, the process of getting there might be a little stressful. Comfort is definitely important. However, the thing is that everyone has a different definition of comfort. Some ladies might feel perfectly comfortable in a dress, while others might prefer the typical jeans and tee outfit formula. Sure, it makes sense to follow some rules. Opting for practical and utility wear might make your life easier when travelling. Similarly, wearing breathable, comfortable and natural fabrics in summer makes sense. However, what if you have a fabulous polyester vintage item you're dying to wear? You know, if that vintage polyester item makes you feel good, wearing it probably makes sense.

When it comes to summer travel style, being reasonable and practical is important. However, often knowing how to have fun with our clothes is just as essential. Sometimes it is important to improvise a bit. Wear something you really want to wear. You are on vacation after all! Not all the travelers/ tourists need to dress the same. Like with everything, you shouldn't be a slave to the rules. Learn the rules and then break them. Moreover, you get to decide what is comfortable for you. That's my main tip for selecting travel outfits. You know yourself best, you know what is best for you. That being said, here are my five tips for selecting the perfect travelling outfit:

1. GO FOR SOMETHING YOU KNOW AND LOVE
As I already pointed out, you know yourself best. You know what feels comfortable to you and what kind of outfits make you feel good. There is no shame in repeating outfits formula. It's called style building. Choosing an outfit you already wore or one in a style you are already comfortable in makes perfect sense.

2. APPLY COMMON SENSE
Applying common sense is something you should always do when travelling. If you've decided to wear a mini dress or something that doesn't cover much skin, don't forget to apply plenty of sun screen all over your skin and wear a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself against the sun. No matter what item or items you decide to go for, sunscreen and sunglasses are a must in the summer.

3. DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE STYLE
You shouldn't forget to have fun with fashion and style while you're on vacation (unless you really feel you need to take time off from even thinking about clothes). Generally speaking though, there is no need to opt for boring outfits just because you're travelling. In fact, this might be the perfect time to have fun with clothes. The beauty of travelling is that you can wear what ever you want. If you want to dress up, there are ways to do it without sacrificing the effort. When the vacation is over and you check out your vacation photography, you might be happy that you invested some effort in your summer outfits. Moreover, vacations are often all about creating beautiful memories (and photographs).

4. CONSIDER YOUR DESTINATION AND TRAVEL DURATION
Choosing a pretty but comfortable outfit for travelling might seem a bit challenging, but you can narrow your travel outfit options down by concentrating on specifics. How long will your travel last? What is your means of travel? Are you travelling with an airplane, a boat or a car? All these factors are something that needs to be considered and they can help you answer that eternal 'What should I wear' question.

5. LOOK FOR INSPIRATION
My final tip is to look for inspiration. Check out what your favourite bloggers, people, friends or celebs are wearing for their vacation. Look for inspiration where you can, both in the virtual and the real world (both on the streets and on the internet). Consider the place you're visiting and use it as an inspiration. Maybe you are visiting a country whose folklore or traditional wear you love? If yes, why not try wearing a national costume or something inspired by that country? That might be the perfect way to get into mood for your vacation.

Recently, I have done a bit of travelling, mostly to visit family members. For visiting Split city (Croatia), I selected this lovely vintage dress and paired it with straw accessories (a straw hat and a straw bag). My suitcase is more on the practical site and so are my shoes. I choose comfortable sandals from Art brand (you know I promised to wear this pair of sandals at least 30 times this summer-in an effort to promote sustainable dressing). I felt really comfortable in this outfit. It might surprise you to learn that I often wear this vintage dress when I'm travelling. It might not look comfortable to some, but that's the thing- comfort is different for everyone. Some ladies will feel perfectly comfortable in a feminine vintage dress! This pink dress is one of favourite items in my closet. I love that it is pleated and simply the perfect length for travelling. Moreover, the subtle floral print on this dress is to die for.  Now, I said that I wear this dress often, didn't I? Here is the proof-  a list of posts that featured this pleated vintage dress (starting with the most recent ones):

WHAT TO WEAR WHEN TRAVELLING?

I CAN'T STOP... (CHERRY PRINT DRESS).
As I already pointed out, it makes sense to stick with what works for you, especially when you're travelling. By styling the items we already have in our closets, we are also opting to be more sustainable. You can also try styling the items you already have in a new way. Travelling can be a great way to get more creative with clothes and sometimes we can be more sustainable this way. Sustainable fashion is not just a trendy topic to talk about for me. I really do try to get the most wear out of my outfits. I love re-wearing clothes and creating stories with them. My favourite clothing items to wear are vintage ones. I feel really drawn to clothing items that have a sense of history about them. I suppose it is why I love vintage items so much. What do you think? Would you wear a vintage dress for travelling? Is comfort as important as style? Can we have both? What do you wear when you're travelling?

  13. Great travel outfits especially that lovely pink dress with those funky sandals!
Travelling to India in January is a bit of a nightmare, it's freezing cold here and - if I'm flying to the South - tropically hot there. As we backpack I can't carry a coat and boots around with me as it'd be impractical so I have to layer up instead - a big cotton scarf is essential, it can double as a sarong on the beach and protect you from the punishing air conditioning on the plane. Happy travels! x

    1. I imagine that a big cotton scarf must really come in handy in this situation. I never travelled by plane to somewhere where the climate would be completely different, but I always wondered how people do it especially when additional luggage can be so pricey.

  15. How pretty is that pink vintage dress your're wearing? Very much so, I'm swooning! I am the worst holiday packer ever, and the problem is that I hardly learn from previous mistakes. But then again, travelling to destinations like the UK doesn't make packing any easier, and the weather can be all sorts. And the most important thing is that I can wear things I'm feeling great AND comfortable in, whatever the weather! xxx

    ReplyDelete

    1. thank you dear. I just love this dress! I used to be the worst holiday packer but I think I got better with time. It also helps that I usually use vacation time to visit my family in Croatia so the main thing to pack are the swimsuits, the jumpsuits and a dress or two. It is easier to pack for sunny weather.

  16. I always consider comfort a factor whenever but even more so when I travel. Being away from home already takes me out of my comfort zone so I don't want to wear anything that makes me uncomfortable. These are such practical and doable tips. Your pink vintage dress is just lovely! I can see why it's a favorite. It looks comfortable as well as feminine and stylish. I hope you're enjoying your visits with your family members.

  27. Dearest Ivana,
You look gorgeous in your travel dress (and in the other clothes you show). As you know, I like to wear dresses and skirts myself. For long flights, however, I prefer (black) Strech-trousers and a (rather dark or patterned) shirt. Why? I have to take my food on a plane in a confined space, sometimes I spill it. On dark material spots are not so good recognizable. And I have to sleep (or try) on long-haul flights. Since I do not want that my rock slips and "everything" is to be seen ;-))

  31. What a relevant topic, and you definitely travel in style yourself and give us an inspiration! I love your vintage dress and cute hat, that's how I typically dress during Summer, and not only for travel - less accessories, comfy shoes and sun protection, let the dress do the talking. :)

I agree with your ideas, and of course we all have different preferences. Also, our own preferences can change a lot. At this point of my life, I can't wear anything polyester if it's above 70F. I had to get more cotton dresses for my work just for that reason - it is usually pretty warm in our libraries and schools even in Winter! Lots of love!
