Things To Do in Ethno Village Herceg in Winter ( Medugorje, Herzegovina)+ Giveaway Winner Announcement

First of all, congrats to Mica from away from the blue blog for winning the art giveaway I hosted. If you remember, the only requirement for the giveaway was that you write why you like the three watercolour paintings I offered. I like to keep my art giveaway rules simple and open to anyone (no matter whether they are a follower or not) so I left the option of email instead of a blog contact. However, I didn't receive any emails. Mica wrote she likes the watercolour paintings because her favourite colour was blue in a blog comment so there is that. Prints of these paintings will probably eventually be available in my redbubble shop under artist name IvanaKada. Originals will be shipped to the winner. Today I'll be talking about things you can do in ethno village Herceg in Herzegovina.

Today I'm taking you to Ethno Village Herceg in Međugorje (official site etno herceg ). This post is neither sponsored nor a collaboration (not that I would mind such an offer), but as it is, I'm just sharing information that I think might be useful. It is a lovely place to visit, so if you ever end up in Herzegovina, this post might help you decide whether to go and see it or not. We were there last week. Recently my parents came to visit us. Among the places I took them to visit was this ethno village. They liked it a lot and now I'm sharing it with you as well.

What to do in ethno Village Herceg in Winter? Well, ethno village Herceg is a big touristic complex that includes a large restaurant and a cafe, a wine shop, different accommodation ranging from stone houses to a large hotel, a big wedding hall, a ceremony hall, congress halls, amphitheater that hosts concerts and performances, a museum (old house), pools with salt water and so on ( I don't think these pools work in wintertime, though) so there are lots of things and many reason why you might want to visit this place. I'm going to list a few actives suitable for a casual visitor or tourist. One of the things that makes this place an attractive winter destination is definitely the mild climate. It is almost always sunny and warm here, as you can see if you check out my winter travel post from last year. That was a nice visit as well for a number of reasons. Nevertheless, let's get back to my list of things you can do in Ethno Village Herceg in Winter.

1. Sightseeing and taking photographs

You can visit this place just to stroll around and take photographs. Lots of people do it. This is a great location for photography. The picaresque stone houses make for a great background. The village complex is very neat and green. There are small creeks, fountains and small lakes that will keep any water lover happy. Moreover, the vineyard (yes, this village has its own vineyard) is quite beautiful.

2. Dinning or enjoying a cup of coffee

Dinning is definitely a nice experience. This restaurant offers an excellent selection of means and desserts. You can also just stop by for a visit. Enjoying a cup of coffee or tea while soaking in the views is a great way to relax. I totally understand the rising popularity of rural tourism and tourist villages. People want some piece and quiet, a return to a more simple way of life but still with an excess to luxury. These kind of places are popular with a good reason.

3. Visiting the chapel

There is a lovely chapel inside of the village. It hasn't been officially registered yet, so I don't think you can have a proper church wedding ceremony there but you can probably have an improvised one. I'm not sure about the legal details and because they might change anytime, it is best you ask for yourself. I mean if you are interested in having a wedding or some event organized here. I really like the art in this chapel. The paintings are so beautiful and expressive. I was actually here when the first sketches were made. I'm not entirely sure by whom, I'll need to check that. I always feel in my element when surrounded by art. I wonder why. :)

4. Staying in the hotel or one of the stone houses

If you want to experience this place fully, probably the best way to do is to stay overnight. I have never spent the night here, so I don't have a hotel experience to share. Maybe I'll do a stayaction some day, and then I'll let you know how I liked it. I do imagine it must be a nice place to stay at.

5. Observing the domestic animals

This village is also a home to some domestic animals. I'm not sure could I call this area  a petting zoo or not. Most of the domestic animals here are different species of birds. There are some donkeys, but they are not petting donkeys. They might let you pet them if they like you, but don't push it. Donkeys are stubborn and they don't like everyone. If they don't like, they might bite. I grow up with donkeys so I think I know what I'm talking about. Donkeys and horses usually respond well to me, so well they frightened me a few times by running after me but I also know when not to push my luck.

After wondering around village for a while, we stopped  at the restaurant for a cup of coffee. We didn't have time to eat lunch, and besides we had already ate at home. Naturally I took the opportunity to cook for my parents. I don't see them that often, and they seem to enjoy my cooking. I dined here many times, though. I was even here as a wedding guest some time ago (but that was in another restaurant/hall) and most of my experiences were really good. Herzegovian cuisine is definitely something you need to experience at least once in your life. Herzegovian wine is another thing that is highly praised. You might say it is one of the landmarks of this region. Herzegovina is famous for its wines.

I know I said it before, but it seems like every time I visit, Herceg village seems a bit larger.  There is always something new to see. These photographs have been taken fairly recently, only a week or so ago when my parents came for a visit. If you want to see more of this place, you can check out my old visits  below:

My outfit was fairly simple. To make up for the simplicity of blue jeans and black coat combo, I choose some colourful accessories (orange gloves and a purple scarf). I think an oversize scarf is always a great way to breathe some colour into an outfit and I personally love to wear colourful scarfs in winter. Another thing I adore is faux fur scarves but you probably all know that. Well, anyhow this was a very comfy winter outfit.  Perhaps I should wear jeans more often.
outfit details: beret (old,  worn previously here), scarf (old worn here), jeans (old worn here), bag (old worn here), shoes: (borsa store Mostar)

That would be all for today. I hope you've enjoyed this post. Let me know if you want me to write more about Herzegovina. This is not my native land, but I've learned here long enough to know a few things. As always, thank you for reading and kind comments.  I wish you all a fantastic weekend.

  3. Yes, dear Ivana, you should really wear jeans more often, as you look absolutely fantastic in them! I love your classy outfit and the scarf and the gloves are fantastic adds. How wonderful your partents visited you! Honestly, I'm not surprised that they like it when you cook for them as I'm convinced you are a very good cook. You had a great idea to visit the ethno village and now I know that this place is even during winter time very entertaining. I could imagine it must be so great to stay there overnight and now I hope simply one day I will be able to visit Herzegovina - not only to try the cuisine there! Thanks for this wonderful post and I love it to see you so happy.

  7. How exciting and congrats to Mica!!
So what is the food of the area like?? I'm Hungarian, so I might think it would be similar. And I'd love to know what you made for your parents!!
This sounds like such a wonderful area to visit. There are so many places in our own back yard that we sometimes forget, so I love that you highlight it.
And the scarf over your jacket worn that way is so fabulous!! I don't often think of wearing it that way, but it's perfect!!

    1. I'm pretty sure some Croatian dishes are very similar to Hungarian cuisine, especially those in region of Slavonia that borders with Hungary. The continental part of Croatia has a similar climate and food as Hungary. Here in Herzegovina there is a strong Mediterranean influence, but the cuisine is really a mix of different influences.

  10. Ah I love this village! What feels so special about it is that here you can really get to understand the culture and connect with everyone in it, it's architecute, nature, and the animals ;) I think these days, too many people in the world are so "attached" the forget the importance and value of deconnecting and remember to enjoy the simplicity and beauty of life. The minimal yet beautiful things that hold value for a reason. And very beautiful paintings, the second one is my favorite :)

  23. I love sightseeing rural areas, these are always so calm, full of colours and have a specific charm. I like the ellegance of the stone houses and also practicality of keeping animals at the farm. I think your outfit looks particularily great this time, I love the shoes. I have to motivate myself to shop for some as I am freezing in the old ones I have. Great blog post.
Btw. I would love to spend an evening at a wedding at some of these restuarants. Must've been magical.
