SPLIT CITY IN SUMMER: A VINTAGE OUTFIT
Hello dear readers and fellow bloggers! How are you doing? Today I'll show you a mixed print outfit I wore for exploring Split, my home town. Moreover, I'll recommend a few places you can visit in Split city. Regular readers are perhaps already familiar with these sights. I have been in love with Split city all my life, so it makes sense that these places pop out on my blog often enough. It was very hot on this particular day, but we still strolled around after taking care of some business. Split city is hard to resist, even in heat. As you will see, we also snapped a few photographs. We even did some shopping in Amadeus store (a Croatian brand). You can see what I bought in my next post. I shopped my closet for this vintage styling and I felt so cute in this outfit (more details bellow). Sometimes when it is hot, I actually like to wear longer skirts and shirts because clothes can shield us from the sun. As long as the outfit is comfortable, that is what matters. This striped puffed sleeve is one of my fav pieces to wear when it is hot. The skirt is polyester, but it doesn't feel too warm. A cross over bag and flat sandals are a reasonable choice on a hot day, aren't they?

HOTEL MARUL IN THE BACKGROUND - We often have coffee there and this time was no exception. This place is one of my favourite place to have a cup of coffee in the centre of city. Hotel Marul has got a small but beautiful garden and the staff is very friendly. There are a few churches and one monastery in vicinity so the views are really nice. In fact, I'm standing in front of one church here.
THE CHURCH OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF BLESSED VIRGIN MARY (ALSO KNOW AS THE CHURCH OF SINLESS VIRGIN MARY)
This church was build in 1895 and it was restored in 2005. It was founded by Catholic nuns and it is built is Neo- Renaissance style. It is under protection as a cultural monument. I love the mosaic of Virgin Mary above the door, it's so beautiful. This church is quite small and I imagine it doesn't get as much visitors as some better known ones. However, it is located at the centre of the city, close to many other more 'famous' sight, so it is a great option if you want to see something unique and less touristy.
CROATIAN NATIONAL THEATRE IN SPLIT- I'm a fan of opera and our theatre has got some great singers. Open in 1883, Split's National Theatre is quite old. In fact, it is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the region. At time time of its opening, it had a capacity of 1000 seats so it was basically the largest theatre of Southeast Europe in its time. It still looks beautiful. I've noticed there is more green and plants in front of it (compared to my last visit). They planted some trees, it looks really nice. Next to the theatre there is a monastery and a church of Our Lady of Health. The monastery and the church were joined together in more recent times so they contrast one another in style. I'll explain why is that.
THE MONASTERY AND THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF HEALTH
The church of Our Lady of Health was built in the thirties on a location of an older 18th century baroque church. The bell tower (that is still standing) was built in the same baroque style. However, the present day church of Our Lady of Health was built in a modernist style so there is a bit of contrast. The monastery also contrasts the more modern church. The monastery was built in the 18th century by Franciscan monks who escaped Turkish invasions. It was connected with the church later on. I love the olives in the garden of the monastery, they are so pretty.
CAFE AND RESTAURANT PERIVOJ (link neither sponsored nor affiliated)
If you are looking for a green oasis in Split city, this cafe and restaurant is the place for you. It's spacious and lovely garden dominated by a beautiful fountain is dreamy. Behind these historical stone walls, you can feel serene and peaceful. I just love their beautiful architecture dating back to Art Nouveau Period (i.e. the beginning of the twenty century).
For those of you who are into history, I will copy a section from the official website of this place: "Mr. Kamilo Tončić noble Sorinjski (1878.-1961.), one of the most famous architects of Croatian Art Nouveau Movement, imagined it as a family villa with a beautiful garden covering more than a 1000 m2. The designer of the villa was Mr. Karel Beneš from Prague, a well known architect and Mr. Tončić’s friend. The owner himself worked out the outlines of the villa and till his old age he took care about the garden.
Today, both, the villa and the garden are under the protection of the Croatian Ministry of Culture.
The south facade of the villa viewing the garden is architectural the most interesting part: a rectangular glass veranda, stone stairs, the terrace decorated with the relieves of eagles. It testifies the early use of concrete in the construction industry. The interior of the villa is still the same. Mr.Tončić was the author of some other important buildings from the Art Nouveau Movement in the center of Split such as Sulfur Spa from 1903. and ‘’The Croatian Home’’ from 1908. which you can see in the street named after him.
The special beauty of all this is the pleasure garden in front of the south facade, the real work of art of horticulture, with Mediterranean nice smelling, aromatic plants, palm trees, cypresses and some rare kind of white roses. There are also some folklore motives sculptured by the students of Prof. Tončić, who was the principal of the vocational school in Split. In the middle of the pleasure garden, there is a big fountain with gold fish, also sculptured in a white stone. " source and more info HERE.
I ordered apple cake and it was served with chocolate ice cream. I noted the lovely presentation of the dish. We haven't dined here yet but since they've got a renowned chef, I imagine it would be a nice experience. The prices for drinks and sweets are pretty reasonable, not as high as you would expect in a place that looks as luxurious. What the website says is really true. The historical walls of this villa will protect you from the traffic noise and you'll really feel like you are in an oasis. Still, if you sit here around noon (as we did), it can get hot. There is some shade available, but the villa itself is sun-bathed. I always recommend sight-seeing when the sun isn't at its strongest. It is my belief we should all avoid sun from 11 am to 3 pm if possible. We had some work to take care of in the city, so we didn't really have a choice, we had to brave the sun. Anyhow, I recommend visiting this place earlier in the morning and later in the evening if you don't like the sun.
Thank you for visiting my blog. Have a lovely day!

Thank you
DeleteI agree that sometimes longer hems and sleeve lengths are the way to go when it's hot because of the sun protection it provides. I try to do the same thing if I'm not using my sun umbrella. This outfit has so much charm. I'm loving the print mixing and the retro inspired vibes.
