THE SUIT UP TREND FOR YEAR 2020 (OUTFIT PROPOSAL + TIPS)

The 'suit up' trend was really big in 2019, but you know what? I don't think it's going anywhere in 2020. In fact, the suit up trend will probably remain a thing next year. Why do I think so? Well, to start with the suits were all over the catwalks this year. There is hardly a designer who didn't feature suits in their autumn/winter (and even spring/summer) collections. Even those designs who typically don't feature suits are now embracing this trend. With suits being so present, it is only to be expected that we will start to see different interpretations of this trend. The 'suit up' look has never been so versatile as it is today. These days you can style a suit with sneakers and nobody will look at you twice. The materials that suits come in have never been more versatile. Even those who swear by casual style can find a suit for themselves because these days one can easily find suits in denim and curd. Moreover, mixing and matching is allowed as well. So, why not embrace the suit trend?

HOW TO KEEP WARM IN A SUIT?
With winter being at our door steps, the question of staying warm is a relevant one. Are suits warm? Well, the warmth of your suit up combo will depend on two things: the material the suit is made of and the amount of layering you do. Fortunately, suits are ideal for layering. Even if your suit is thin, you can layer it and make it warm. Wear a pair of tights underneath your pants and a turtleneck under your blazer for extra warmth. Take my outfit proposal of the day, for example. This grey suit is not new but it's new to me. I got it from my sister-in-law and Christmas Eve was the first time I wore it. I paired it with heeled boots and a navy velvet polo neck. The velvet polo neck is obviously very warm and cozy so I was warm enough. For most of the day, I didn't even wear a coat, I only put it on later on in the day when it got windy. However, in winter months, you'll probably need to wear something over your suit (unless it is a really thick one). That brings us to our next question.

WHAT TO WEAR OVER THE SUIT IN THE WINTER?
An oversize coat is an ideal item to pair with a suit. A trench coat is another great choice, but really there are so many options these days. Pick a neutral coat for a more classical look and a coloured one to make your outfit more fun. Don't forget to accessorize. Bellow you can see how I paired this grey suit with a magenta coat, a tartan scarf and a caramel bag. I really enjoyed wearing this outfit. It was the perfect mixture of fun and elegant for me. What do you think? Do you like to wear suits? If yes, how do you style them? Do you plan to wear them in winter? Besides coats, what else do you wear over your suits? You know, I think a good puffer is also a good choice. A neutral long puffer would look fantastic worn over any suit. With a more tailored suits, you can wear more tailored jackets. When it comes to successful layering, you really need to think about the cuts. You can't expect an oversize suit to look good with a super tight coat. Layering suits isn't difficult, but you need to think about dimensions. You should always pair similar items. Oversize suits go well with oversize coats and puffer. The same goes for tailored suits and coats, just remember that your coat should be one size up if you're wearing a suit in your true size under it.
THE SUIT TREND FOR 2020: THE MANY WAYS TO WEAR THIS TREND
When I saw suits taking such a major part in Dolce & Gabbana women collection, I knew something was up. This is a brand that is known for feminine cuts and midi dresses (in their collections for women). If they are embracing the masculine cut of the suit, then everyone is. Personally, I'm partial to the feminine version of the suit and by that I mean the blazer and skirt combo but there is something empowering about the classical pants and blazer combination. Suits with skirts are always more feminine, but pants are sometimes the more practical, empowering and professional choice, one that you can feel comfortable in. The term power suit wasn't coined without a reason.

HOW TO FAKE THE SUIT UP LOOK IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT ANY SUIT?
If you are not, for whatever reasons, interested in buying new suits, you can always fake the suit up look. There are few ways in which you can do this. First of all, you can try pairing your jeans with jacket and blazers. Dark and white jeans are fabulous options because they match just about anything. If you want a pull together look, you can try matching your jeans or pants with your blazer. Choose jeans and a blazer in a similar tone and you can easily create a pull together look. Neutral items should work well for creating a suit look. Try pairing a pair of white jeans with a dark blazer and vice versa. Grey jeans and blazers should look very minimalist and elegant as well. Similarly, you can try pairing your more classical pants (those pencil cut ones are perfect) with different blazers you have in your closet. It is alright to mix and match a little. You can wear your blazers and pants with shirts and ties for a more classical look or you can try wearing them with fun tops and turtlenecks for a more casual version of the suit up look. Moreover, shorter jackets and coats can be worn as blazers as well. You can try pairing your short black coat with black jeans to create a suit look. Back in April, I wrote an article titled HOW TO ROCK THE SUIT LOOK so feel free to check it out if you want more 'suit up inspiration.' There really is a way to wear the suit trend to fit just about anyone's sense of style.

HOW TO WEAR THE SUIT UP TREND ON A BUDGET?
A suit is always a good investment, but if you haven't got anything on your bank account, then investing really isn't an option. Obviously, budget suits are an option as is shopping your closet, but there is another way to wear the suit up trend on a budget and that is: shop second hand and vintage. Not only is shopping second hand and vintage good for the environment, it is also good for your bank account. Another benefit of shopping vintage is that the materials used to be of better quality. A chance is that by buying a vintage suit, you'll be buying one that is more quality made than anything you can find in the shops (at reasonable prices). I actually have quite a few vintage blazers in my closet and I use them as a basis for most of my 'suit up' looks. Vintage suits are the best, especially if you're build the old fashion way. I feel like vintage clothes fit my body much better than modern ones. Moreover, vintage materials are definitely more comfortable and safe than modern ones. My tip for 2020 is: try to find some vintage suits or blazers and wear them often.

That would be all for today. The location for these images is once again island Hvar, Croatia. The best location for outfit photographs, isn't it? Thank you all for reading and visiting! I'm linking this post with Nancy's Fashion Friday Linkup. Happy holidays!

Personally, I really like that suits are trendy and like you I think this trend will stay in 2020. I have a few suits in my closet I wear often and own mostly since years. Honestly, if I don't know what to wear I often opt for a suit!

  10. Island Hvar is indeed a very picturesque location, and perfect for outfit photos. Although I do love a suit, I never owned a trouser suit, preferring a skirt suit instead. That said, if I came across the perfect vintage trouser suit in my size, I'd definitely buy and wear it. As you mentioned, a suit can be dressed up or down, and can perfectly be mixed and matched. I do have several vintage skirt suit as well as dress suits, consisting of a dress and a matching jacket! How lovely to hear that suits are a trend, even though I do no follow trends, plus I do think that suits are timeless, and thus a good investment. Wishing you a wonderful last weekend of the year, Ivana! xxx
