HOW TO ROCK THE SUIT LOOK? OUTFIT IDEAS AND TIPS

The easiest way to rock the suit look is to find a suit you'll love and feel comfortable and then wear it until you get the hang of it. You can start by shopping your own closet, trying out different items and seeing what works for you. Often you'll find that you already have something in your closet you can work with. It is important to think of reducing our textile waste these days.  It is only if you can't find anything you like in your closets,  that you should hit the shops. Keep in mind that a suit is definitely a good investment. It is one of those must have items in our closet. I recently saw an article about some young girl who wore the same suit for three months on Instagram to point out how we should invest in quality items that can be worn multiple times, as opposed to indulging in fast fashion. A nice suit might be perfect for this kind of project, for there definitely are many ways to rock the suit look. I personally think the suit up look is great for any age, just because it is so versatile.

TIPS FOR WEARING & STYLING SUITS

Suits are actually quite easy to dress up and down. All you need to dress down a suit is a cute top and a pair of sneakers. Likewise, if you want to dress a suit up, all you need is a fancy clutch and a pair of fancy shoes. If you're going to own just one suit, I would suggest opting for a black one. However, a suit in bright colour is a lovely choice as well, especially if it is something you're comfortable wearing. A suit in bright pink can become your iconic piece, if bring pink is something you adore.

I don't own a lot of suit sets, but those that I do own get plenty of wear. I sometimes 'create' my own 'suited up' looks by pairing pencil skirts and blazers in similar tone. Even if your personal style is more casual or relax, a nice suit will come in handy. I had a classical black suit piece made (blazer plus pencil skirt and pants) and it is one of the most worn items in my wardrobe. I definitely recommend investing into a nice hand made suit. Any garment that was made to fit you, either by being altered or being made for you, is obviously going to have that fitted look that is so important when we're talking professional looking suits. If you work in an office or a strict dress code work space, you probably already own a suit and know how practical they can be. Ideal for those days you want to look put together but don't have much time to spare. A nice fitted suit is the perfect injection of confidence.

When talking suits, it is important to note that little details can make all the difference. Personalizing our suits isn't that difficult. Just think of something you like long enough and you'll figure out a way to make it a part of the suited up look. For a fun twist on the suit trend, wear a fun printed shirt or a top. Bellow is a picture of me taken when I was 20  years old, wearing my first black suit. I remember that even than I liked the idea of being suited up.  Above is a photograph of me wearing a suit I had custom made. You really can't go wrong with a classical black suit. It is the 'set' equivalent of  a white shirt, a little black dress and a trench coat. Those are the timeless items that have to find its place in any wardrobe. I think we all sometimes need to rock the power suit look.

For a clean look, pick a blazer and pants/skirt in the same colour. That will make you look more put together. Going all monochrome isn't a bad idea either. You can also wear a bright shirt or top under your monochrome suit to break it up a little. The possibilities are endless, aren't they? If you're a lover of patterns, why not choose a tartan suit or a suit in some other print? Tweet suits can be a lot of fun to wear as well. There is no doubt that the classical Chanel tweed suit is here to stay. Choose playful accessories to add some spice into your classical suit stylings.

CLASSIC IS THE WAY TO GO, BUT CONSIDER OTHER OPTIONS, SUCH AS OVERSIZED

The classical suit look will never go out of style. Patterns and bold colours are another great take on the suit trend. However, perhaps you'll want to be a bit more brave and try the oversized look. This is a great idea if  this is something you're already used to. If you know how to rock the oversized trend, you'll be able to pull off an oversize suit easily. Trying out different cuts and designs of suits might bring you to your perfect statement suit outfit. Experiment with style, material and size to give the classical suite a modern vibe. An oversized suit with fun details can be a real show stopper.

MIX AND MATCH DIFFERENT SETS & EXPERIMENT WITH COLOURS AND STYLES

Mix and matching suits is also a fun idea. You can switch up your blazers and pants from different sets. The same obviously applies for the blazer and skirt combos. You can wear a yellow blazer with black pants and the other way around. It is a good way to get the most out of your closet. I sometimes wear my 'suit' pants on their own. The same goes for my 'suit' skirts, I wear them with blouses and long cardis to break down the business look.

I often wear pencil pants and skirts with my vintage blazers. It is a fun way to jazz up the classical suit look. Accessories obviously play a big part in styling suits as well. I like to wear my DIY necklaces and other DIY accessories with suits because they help to make the suit look more unique. One thing is for sure, there are many ways to break down the classical suit look.

A TURTLENECK WORN WITH A SUIT

Did you know that it was a Croatian scientist and Nobel prize winner Vladimir Prelog who made turtleneck and suit look popular in the eighties? The legend states that Vladimir Prelog's wife got tired of ironing his shirt for work every day, so for the benefit of his marriage he started wearing turtlenecks. As Vladimir was an influential scientist and a mentor to many, he spread the fashion. All of his students in Switzerland started wearing turtlenecks. Most people think of Steve Jobs when they think of a turtleneck worn with a suit, and while he was the one who made the look iconic, he wasn't the first one to rock it. I would dare say that a poloneck worn with a suit might just be the perfect transitional way to rock the suit look.

  4. I don't have any suits any more but I do love the look on you! I find I can create a suit kind of look with a skirt and blazer and that's a frequent go-to for me in the cooler days in the office, even if the pieces weren't bought together!

Hope you are having a great weekend :) Another busy one here!

  5. These are great looks. I used to love wearing suits when I was younger. Then the workplace became more casual so I started to mix and match pieces. Now that I am self employed I no longer wear them. However I did keep some important pieces just in case they are needed in the future! I had no idea the turtleneck with a suit was influenced by a Croatian scientist. That was a look I would go with in the winter since I would always be cold.

    1. I wear turtlenecks all year around, for some reason I'm obsessed with them but yes a suit with a turtleneck paired with a coat would be an ideal outfit for cold days.

  10. Oooh yas! You really rocked the suit look and you also gave us many ideas that are such an inspiration to combine and try out new things :) Actually I've been looking for a suit for a few months, I ordered one from Zara but in the end I asked for a refund because it looked different in real life compared to the web haha.

Also I agree with you and I feel like suits have endless possibilities, they are not longer the garment we associate with a corporation or with an office attire, now we can go and have a cocktail or hang out with friends in a nice suit OOTD as all those you propose :)

    Best!

  11. These options all look very stylish. There's nothing like a good suit to appear polished bot to mention it can be very versatile if you mix the pieces into other outfits. I picked up a herringbone check pant suit on super sale and I should try to wear it soon.
