TROGIR CITY (PART TWO): KAMERLENGO CASTLE AND OTHER SIGHTS

KAMERLENGO CASTLE AND FORTRESS

As I promised in my last post, my description of  wonderful Trogir city continues. Today I'll show you the city's promenade, its walls and a historical fortress Kamerlengo. We'll start with the latter, as it is one of the main attractions. Castle and fortress Kamerlengo was designed and constructed in the fifteenth century by a local Croatian builder and sculptor known as Martin Radoj. Martin also worked on some of the Gothic elements of Trogir city cathedral and later on in life he was entrusted with the construction of Trogir port. The fortress was commissioned by the Republic of Venice, hence its name 'camelengo ' that is an Italian version of chamberlain. I didn't go inside of  Kamerlengo fortress this time because I've been there before so I just enjoyed observing it from the outside. Besides the Kamerlengo castle, today I'll also show you the city walls and other details from Trogir. Enjoy.

Once again, here is a list of the main attractions in Trogir city ( I will link up those I already covered in my last post):

The UNESCO protected historical centre (its key attractions being the ten historical churches and numerous buildings dating back to 13th century)
The Cathedral with the portal made by master Radovan
The City Gate (15th century)
- The City Walls (17th century)
- The Palaces Cipiko (15th century)
- The Fortress Kamerlengo ( 15th century)
The City Loggia (15th century)

Once you walk past the fortress, you can enjoy strolling the marine as well. Behind the fortress there is a small football stadium where some children were playing soccer as we were strolling around.  That is what I love about cities in Dalmatia. They are so historical they feel like museum but the kind people still live in. Living monuments you could say. Nice to see history come full circle that way. It's always lovely to see life in historical cities.

THE CITY PROMENADE AND THE CITY WALLS

Trogir has a beautiful promenade. You can enjoy your espresso with  stunning views of the city walls dating back to the seventeenth century. There are plenty of little cafes,  restaurants and terraces  where you can enjoy the view of island ÄŚiovo that is located right next to Trogir as well as many yachts and ships. This is also a great location to do some airplane watching, as Split airport is only a short distance away and you'll be able to see every airplane that lands.

 MY OUTFIT
I wore a comfortable outfit and switched between two scarves (depending on whether it was windy or not) I picked up in one second hand shop in Split. I didn't have time to shop while in Croatia, but I did buy a bag full of scarves and ties for about an euro (this shop sells clothes per pound so scarves are a good thing to buy). Anyhow, this was a comfy outfit. The white linen shirt I was wearing is a Croatian folkore shirt I bought from a lady at Mostar annual fair (another event I yet have to blog about).

There are two yacht marinas in Trogir, so if you like ship watching this is the place. Besides adorable dogs nestled on yachts, you can also see many historical structures and buildings. There are many things to admire: the ancient Hellenistic structure, the beautiful Romanesque churches and outstanding Renaissance and Baroque buildings from the Venetian period.

THE BRIDGE TO ISLAND ÄŚIOVO

Island ÄŚiovo is only a short distance away. All you need to do to get to it is to walk this bridge. You'll be there before you know it. There is also a new bridge located in vicinity but this one is easier to cross. If you like bridges, why not visit both of them?

BEAUTIFUL HISTORICAL CHURCHES IN TROGIR

I already mentioned that Trogir has a high concentration of medieval churches. Why not wonder around and see them all? The weather was a bit temperamental while we were there, it even rained a little but it didn't ruin my visit at all. Trogir is so gorgeous that the weather conditions scarcely matter. When you're interested in exploring culture and history, the weather is really the least of your worries.

Thank you for reading & commenting. Let me know what you thing about the second part of my Trogir post.

  1. This city looks amazing with those centuries old structures and medieval churches! The promenade looks perfect for a stroll and refreshment. A store that sells clothing by the pound? That sounds like a fun place to shop, never knowing what treasure you will find. Trogir is certainly a place I would love to visit.

  2. So much history packed into this place. And oh so beautiful too. It's really nice to see life as usual going on with the soccer players in such a historic city. The Promenade is breathtaking. If i lived there, I'd probably spend a good amount of time there, just people watching. And airplane watching too of course. I love your outfits Ivana. Your scarf is very lovely and chic. I also love your blazer, it ties the look up very nicely. The church and alleyway are so just so stunning as well. I'm sure there are tons of tourists out there on a daily basis.
