Inspired by Jodie's Touch of Style: WATERCOLOUR FASHION ILLUSTRATION

Hello darlings! Happy Monday to you! I've been working on fashion illustrations for most of the day, so you could say I have had a productive Monday so far. In fact, I've prepared a new fashion painting for my Inspired by feature. If you're a regular reader, then you'd know that Inspired by is a regular feature on my blog that consists of my fashion illustrations of bloggers. During the years, I've illustrated many beautiful bloggers, such as Jessica WangJessi MalayFashionably IduPaola Lauretano, Selvaggia (better known as Francesca  Romana Capizzi), Silvia, Vale,  Rena and so on.

Today I've illustrated three ladies from Jodie's touch of style blog: Jodie, Nancy and Charlotte. I've actually illustrated Jodie and her moms before (last summer), you can see that post here. Today I've decided to paint a new fashion illustration of them, this time using watercolours. I ended up using coloured pencil for some finishing touches, so you could say this is a mixed media fashion illustration (it is mostly watercolour, though). The paper I used is a mixed media paper from brand Strathmore (not sponsored, I actually got it from a blogging friend Natalia). I love this paper because you can use it for different media. I often do mixed media art and this mixed media art block has really come in handy. Scroll down to see my fashion illustration of the day.

THE PAINTING PROCESS
First I sketched this fashion illustration with a pencil, and then I used watercolours.  I added the finishing touches with a coloured pencil (Details:DIMENSIONS: 9 inches x 12 inches (22.9 x 30.5 cm), weight: 90 lb (190 g/m2). ) I'm going to show you a few work in progress photographs as well (or better to say one collage photograph). That way you can see how I applied the watercolour in layers. I do love painting fashion illustrations with watercolours because it gives them such an artistic feel. When I was done, I also made some black and white copies of the original painting.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THESE LOOKS?
I love all three of these outfits because they are feminine but also fun.  I think a combo of a printed t-shirt with a feminine skirt is simply brilliant. The messages on the t-shirts are about female empowerment and blogging, something I can relate to. Great outfits, perfect for spring. Jodie, Nancy and Charlotte wore these outfits so well.

WHY I CHOOSE THESE OUTFITS TO ILLUSTRATE?
The reason why I choose these outfits was (apart from the fact they are beautiful) is because they are challenging to draw and paint. Every one of these outfits is challenging in its own way. Jodie is wearing a beautiful blue pleated skirt and that's not an easiest thing to paint. Fortunately, I watched a few fashion illustration tutorial videos, so I wasn't unprepared. This is the first time I'm drawing a pleated skirt either (remember my fashion illustration of lovely Melody Jacob?). The challenge in Nancy's outfit was also the skirt. It has a print that was hard to replicate. Charlotte's skirt wasn't any less complicated to paint. It is a leopard skirt with a furry texture. Fortunately, I once tried a leopard manicure so I know how to draw this print (it is easier to do it on paper then on nails). Moreover, I already practices illustrating fur so the texture of the skirt wasn't that big of a deal. On overall, I'm happy with how I did. I painted the t-shirts in bluish tones even if some of them are more white, but I wanted to capture the texture of them and I think bluish and greyish tones are a good choice for depicting cotton t-shirts.

    1. thank you so much, it's nice to hear you think I captured the personality as well. I didn't go for full realistic sketches as I was drawing in fashion illustration style, but I always try to capture a bit of a person's personality.
