How To Style Dad Sneakers? Outfit Proposal + The Help (movie and book recommendation)

Dad's sneakers. Love them or hate them, there is no denying they're one of the hottest trends. I only have one such pair, and to be honest I have had it for a while. I bought this pair of white trainers something like seven years ago. Yeah, that long ago. I wish I could tell you the name of the brand, because they have proven to be a great purchase but the brand name is no longer clearly visible. Anyway, if you feel like rocking this dad sneaker trend, but you aren't confident that you can't pull it off, you can always opt for a more basic outfit. For example, I paired them with jeans and a black top. Something basic like that is always a good idea if you want a more toned down approach to some trend. You can dress down anything with denim. This pair of jeans is vintage, but I customized them by painting them with textile paints. I didn't made them distressed, that was just a natural process as they are quite old. I do love vintage clothes. Vintage fabrics are so unique. Plus, when you're wearing vintage you can be pretty certain that nobody else is wearing the same. So, that's probably why I love customizing clothes. The necklace I'm wearing is my own creation. I made it years ago when I was really into jewelry making. I do wish I knew how to make things like this, but it seems like I have lost this skill. People often think of talent as something that just happens, but it is not so. There is always so much work behind any creation. I used to be really really good at making all kind of jewelry, but it is a skill that I have partly lost, because I don't do it as much anymore. I can still make necklaces, but I feel I'm not as good at it as I used to be. Do you know what I mean? Is there a skill that you have lost? It really is as they say, use it or lose it.

These images were taken last year, but I haven't had the chance to share them. I do miss being this curvy, but it is hard to maintain a curvy physique when you have Chron's disease. However, I decided long ago that I won't stress about it. Aesthetic preferences are one thing, health is another. I won't stress over my weight as long as my weight is healthy. My personal preference for myself is a bit curvier look but I'm happy the way I'm now. In the end, what difference does it make? A few pounds up or down, it doesn't really matter. When my doctors tell me to gain weight, I will try to do that but I won't stress over it too much. I don't believe that ideal weight is one number. It is a range of numbers. Trying to hold onto that one magical number we picked out for ourselves is not the most realistic thing to do. Unless one is a professional athlete or a model, being too focused on one's weight doesn't really make that much sense. Besides, in life there are always things we can't control. We can't make time for everything. We have to pick and choose. Taking care of our health is important, but we must not let it grow into an unhealthy obsession. In the end, there is only as much as we can do. Eat healthy, try to get enough sleep, go for a walk. We shouldn't feel like we're a failure if we don't always remain the same. Everything changes and as humans it is something we need to acknowledge. Health problems are nothing to feel bad or ashamed about, it's something almost everyone has. It is just that people don't talk about them so much, for a number of reason. Maybe it would be better if we were more open about these subjects.

If you are interested in reading my detailed review about the book I'm holding, you can check out my review here. I wrote this review a year ago, but this novel is still fresh in my memory. To put it in a few words, The Help by Kathryn Sockett is a fantastic novel that carries a powerful message. Reading it was a very emotional experience for me, I literally cried while I was reading it. One thing I absolutely love about this novel is that it carries a warning against psychological violence. We often tend to see only man as abusers, and while it is certainly true that the majority of violent crimes are committed by men, psychological violence is just as harmful if not more. Both men and women commit psychological violence, but sometimes we don't recognize violence committed by women for what it is. Passive aggressive behaviour, bullying and treats, these are all weapons that certain abusive women use against other women,  but sometimes we fail to acknowledge this behaviour for what it is- psychological violence. As society we see women as victims, but while it is certainly true that many women are victims of domestic abuse, there are also women who are psychological abusers but get away with it because they portray themselves as victims. This is a very difficult subject and I'm happy that some woman was brave enough to tackle this subject. I feel the novel carries such a strong message of love. It  is a novel that warns against the perils of racism, but I also feel it is also a novel that is against any kind of violence. I know everyone always says that the film never compares to a book. However, despite the fact that I feel like this novel gave me a better insight than the film did, I still think the film was pretty good. So, I would recommend both the film and the book. The movie has such a great casting and the acting is very powerful. Both the film and the book impressed me thoroughly, so yes I feel like I can recommend them both.

  8. I had no idea you lived with Crohn's Disease, I feel for you and can understand how frustrating it must be. Having said that, it sounds as though you have such a healthy outlook and way of dealing with the weight loss - very inspiring, Ivana! On a different note, I love your passion for reading and your blog often pricks my conscience with regard to not reading enough haha ;) I do a lot of writing, but I definitely feel as though books are missing from my life right now. Thanks for the well-timed reminder!!

  20. What you wrote about psychological violence is very intriguing as I have thought about the subject myself and we often treat them a different way as though they're not as 'violent' as the physical one. I knew someone who was a mild-mannered person but was mentally very aggressive. This was directed outwards and also inwards and the person is actually wonderful when not engaging with such a behavior but I guess we all have our own inner journey to go through and I put this into practice with the way I treat myself as well others. Be kind and empowering to myself and also feel the energy get directed outwardly to others. I love these photos that you share of your very casual outfit which I would wear. I am sorry about you experiencing Crohn's but I also want to say that I admire your strength because of it. Sending you a ray of sunshine and loads of smile and hugs from tropical Malaysia <3 :D

February recap / sažetak veljače

You have seen (more or less) what was February like for me. Now tell me... what was February like for you? Are you happy that it's already March or do you feel like time is flying too fast? Are you looking forward to the spring?

As far as blogging goes, it seems that I have became more focused on fashion illustrations. In the next month the illustrations will have their place, but there will be more focus on DIY....or at least I think so, because I'm kind of heading in that direction. Apart from that, I have no plans. I have so many ideas when it comes to what I want to blog about, that I often have hard time deciding what not to include. As always, feel free to write about what you would like to see.

Wearing the First Dress I Ever Made: A Grey Midi Dress

Here it is: the first dress I have ever made entirely by myself. I did make some summer dresses in the past, but I had sown them without a pattern and a sewing machine and at any rate I wouldn't call them very accomplished. I mean, they weren't nearly as polished as this dress and they were not nearly as complex to make. I'm very happy with how this dress turned out. I'm even happier I took this sewing course in the first place because now I can make more dresses like this one! If you remember my November highlights post, you might remember that I've mentioned how I've recently finished a beginning fashion tailoring and sewing course with designer Stanka Zovko.

I promised to show you the dress I made for my course 'graduation'. At the end of this lovely sewing course, you get to choose not only what you're going to make, but also the material and the pattern.  The sewing pattern is typically chosen from one of the sewing magazines this designer has …

How To Style Animal Print? + An Autumnal Fairy Tale at Ethno Village Near Medugorje

With winter at our doorstep, I think it's important to make the most out of the left over autumn days. With that in mind, my husband and I payed another visit to our favourite (still not officially opened!) ethno village in vicinity of Medugorje. I wrote about this eco/ethno village a number of times, so if you want to know more (or just see more photographs) feel free to check out my old posts herehereherehere and here.  Autumn is Herzegovina is always gorgeous, and this year hasn't been an exception. We had some sudden weather changes and drastic changes of temperature, but I would still describe this autumn as a beautiful one. The Sunday this photographs were taken on was rather gorgeous, so I'm certainly glad we went on this little trip. I know I'm repeating myself, but I do cherish moments like this. Every time I step into this little village, I feel as if the time has stopped or rather like I have just travelled in time. It's such a charming place! I h…
