Black Marker Fashion Illustrations + When Winter Refuses To Go Away: All Black Outfit Proposal
There is a stark contrast between the black marker fashion illustrations/sketches I'm going to share today and my outfit. The fashion sketches are all about spring and summer, while the outfit is all about winter. The only thing they have in common is that they are both in black. So, I figured I can post them together. I made these sketches last summer and originally I didn't plan to share them on my blog, but now I decided to do so because I've spent quite a few hours drawing and painting yesterday and that made me realize how important sketching is. Free styling things is everything when you'e trying to find your own style. Yesterday I've even used markers again (to work on my new illustrations), so that made me reflect not just on drawing with markers but on the importance of drawing from head. I have even made a little drawing/painting video but I'm not sure am I going to post it or not. Would you like to see it?
Painting from memory or imagination is my favourite thing to do. However, (as you know if you have been reading my blog) lately, I've been making so many catwalk illustrations based on recent fashion collections (my way of catching up with the fashion weeks), that I didn't really have time for sketching. Yesterday, I decided to make some time. I'll probably show you how that ended up soon enough. Today I'm showing you these old old sketches. The bottom line is that sketching is a a great way to get new ideas. Often my sketches end up becoming paintings. Sometimes I'm so caught up in improving my technique that I forget to sit down and just create art, draw what I feel like drawing, without plans or expectations.

Now, about the outfit. All black styling with red details. A lots of black faux fur (a faux fur stole and faux fur leg warmers). This red cap is one of my favourite ones. It was a gift from my husband. He have it to me on our second date, ages and ages ago. He said that he saw in a shop window and it made him think of me. Isn't that cute? What do you wear when it gets really cold? These photographs are a bit ironic. The Japanese cherry tree is blooming, the sun is shining, and yet I'm all wrapped like I'm going to face the worst of winter weather. Looking at these images, it feels like I'm overreacting. It's sunny, how cold it can be? Well, you'll just going to have to trust me. It was very cold.

These are beautiful. I love the simplicity of the black marker. It's still cold here, yesterday and today have been dry so far, bright but still cold. I just hope Spring weather will be with us soon enough, it feels like a very long winter xx
ReplyDeleteit has been a long winter, let's hope spring arrives soon.
Delete¡Bravo por las ilustraciones!

thank you.
DeleteLovely sketches hun, I always enjoy your fashion illustrations. :) And the hat is super cute and looks so warm and comfy! It was so nice of your husband to get it for you as a gift. And honestly, in terms of the weather it's the same over here. There is sunshine and it looks deceptively warm, but it's actually still freezing so I always wrap up warm. :) Thanks for sharing, lovely. x

thank you dear. Deceptively warm is how I would describe it as well.
DeletePainting from memory or imagination must be such a great way to cultivate your creativity while working on your technique. The story behind your cap is really sweet and that was really thoughtful of your husband. I get the irony. I took photos of a cherry blossom tree in our garden as it was being covered with snow in a snowstorm last week.
ReplyDeleteI know, the weather has been totally crazy!
Deletethank you!
ReplyDeleteHey Ivana, I must say that I love that you're lately drawing fashion from runway and new collections, this is definitely one of the things I like the most when it comes to fashion illustration but of course the possibilities of art and illustrations are endless and this is the cool part, that when we get tired of something we can change in a bit of minutes :D
ReplyDeleteI love to make illustrations also with black lines (I could use ink, marker as you or sometimes just a pen) because sometimes simplicity is also good to appreciate the simple kind of life ;)
Love the result and your outfit is a great compliment to the art in this post!
Best!
Pablo
HEY FUNGI
yes, there are so many different ways to approach fashion illustrations. It's great, isn't it?
DeleteYou did an excellent job using a black marker Ivana! I imagine it's harder than a pencil or such. But your attention to detail is so good. The cherry blossoms are beautiful there. It's warm here, so I think the feel of winter is behind us.
