Painting with make up: FAQ/ Slikanje sa šminkom: česta pitanja (part two/ drugi dio)

This post about painting with make up is a continuation of this one. Do you want to know how to paint with make up? What kind of make up products can be used for painting? What kind of paper is best for painting with make up? Well, you've come to the right place because today I'm answering all of your questions.

What are the prons and cons of using beauty products to create art?

They are numerous prons and cons of using a make up product to create paintings.  I will do my best to at least touch upon most of them in this post. In my previous one, I explained how it was possible to use make up for creating illustrations and painting.  First time I used make up for illustrations was back in 2014 and how that was like you can see here

Can painting with make up make your art different? Can it give you a fresh perspective?

Yes, it might make your paintings different and give you a new perspective so I think it is safe to say it can. If you want to try something new, this might do the trick. One advantage is that whatever you create (painting, illustration, poster etv) using make up supplies, it is bound to be unique. Your paintings will look different and that might result in them looking quite original. In addition, there will probably be a lot of shine and glitter in them, but whether that is a pro or a con I will leave you to decide. However, the difference won't be a very dramatic one. After all, art is not about the medium and whatever medium you choose, the ultimate creation always depends on a combination of talent and hard work. That doesn't mean that you can't do it only for the fun of it. We don't need to have artistic aspirations to paint, we may just want to create something lovely for ourselves and our own personal pleasure.

Vaše slike će izgledati drukčije i originalno. No, razlika neće biti doista dramatična.

What is the down side to using a make up product to paint?

It can be mighty frustrating. You will have to rely on yourself, for you won't find a lot of tutorials on this subject. I probably won't make any tutorials myself, at least not in the near future, because I'm still figuring it out. Make up isn't designed for painting. Make up products are designed to be used on skin, not on paper. That's the challanging part. Don't expect it to be too easy, it will probably take you some time to get really familiarized with it. Furthermore, despite the fact that using old make up is eco-friendly, you will find out how annoying it is for your 'art' supplies to be ever changing. As soon as you get used to painting with let's say lipstick, you will have to use another product because you ran out of lipstick.

What are advantages and disadvantages of  old make up products compared with regular painting supplies?

The only problem is that unlike art supplies, it might be tricky to get your supplies. I mean you're going to use the make up you already have, so it will be limited edition series. You'll take up some product and work with it. As soon as you manage to figure out how to paint with it, it is already gone. You'll be surprised at how fast you can use it up.  However, that can be used to boost your creativity. No repetition, no rules, no shortcuts. Every paintings needs new rules.

painted on paper/ naslikano na napiru
What is the advantage of using a make up product for painting and drawing?

I think it's main advatage is that it forces you to use your head. It can be tricky, but it is also loads of fun. Figuring out how to use and apply on paper (or cardboard), a product that is made to be used on skin only -that is where you can get creative. That is the fun part. Most make up products have great pigmentation. They can be used in variety of ways, for all kinds of DIY, not just for creating paintings and illustrations. If you're creative enough, you might end up with some exciting new techiques. It can teach you a lot about making art. So, you might end up with some things you will really like. It can help you develop your style. It can give you a fresh perspective.

What make up products can be used for painting?

All make up products can be used for painting. You will have to take the texture of a chosen make up product in consideration when you're planning your little art projects. For instance, lipsticks are usually creamy so keep that in mind. Lipsticks can be perfect for painting, but that doesn't mean you can't use them for illustrations and drawings as well. If you want to make a drawing using a lipstick, it will probably be best to make a sketch first and then perhaps use some kind of tool to help you apply it. On the other hand, if you want to create something using wide strokes, than lipstick is perfect for that. I used it to create backgrounds on my paintings and I applied it in two different ways: with a make up brush and with fingers. Both ways seemed to work. Don't worry about it, whatever you want to draw, illustrate or paint, you'll figure it out.

What are the best make up products for painting?

All make up products can be the best ones for you personally because when it comes to painting/illustration/drawing, you have to work out by yourself what products suit you the most. So, it is just like using make up for what it is meant to do, it all comes down to what you like and what kind of effect you wish to produce. Depending on what you want to paint, draw or illustrate, you can use any make up product or all of them. The more make up products you have in your collection, the more choice you have. Nevertheless, you can create great drawings, paintings or illustrations using just one old make up product, for example an old eyeliner. You never know what will inspire you the most. So far, I used various make up products. More or less, I have used up all old make up that I have.

Dosada sam koristila razne proizvode, a više manje sam iskoristila svu staru šminku koju imam.

What kind of surface is the most appropriate for applying make up products?

I'm still not quite sure how to answer this one. I'm guessing that the best surface would be the kind of surface that  resembles  skin. Logical dictates that would be creamy paper. However, I don't have any cream paper in my home, so I never tried painting on anything other than paper or cardboard. From my personal experience, paper and cardboard are appropriate surfaces for applying make up products. You just need to think logically. If you want to paint with foundation and you're using a paper that is not meant to absorb that much (for example paper for regular printing) then you should use foundation carefully and not applying a lot of it on paper because obviously that would destroy it. As I said, it might take a few hits and misses to get it right, but basically you can use make up products to paint on whatever you like. You never know what can happen, you might be the one who comes out with some new painting method.

Tko zna možda baš vi pronađete i razvijete neku novu tehniku.

I hope you found this post useful (and not only because it took me a long time to write it but for other reasons as well). Well, the main reason why I wanted to write it in the first place was to encourage you to try painting with make up because I'm pretty sure that is something a lot of people could enjoy. It's a fun and affortdable activity. If you use your old make up supplies, then it is very eco-friendly as well. If I managed to give you some inspiration or answer some of your questions, that writing this post was time well spent ( even if the cost was one less day at the beach). Anyway, that's all for today. The reason for my absence lately wasn't just this post that took a bit longer to write, but also the fact that I went to visit my grandmother on island Hvar. Spending one week without internet connection was actually really nice, I would recommend it to everyone.

  8. Hi again, dear Ivana! I haven't stop by your blog since the last week and it is always cool to visit you :D You always delight me with your art and with your ideas, and you know what they say, in order to be creative (if you're a content creator, call it what you want: painter, illustrator, writer, musician, etc.) you have to appreciate and fill yourself with inspiration from other artists! And you know how to do it so well ;)

I love that you're always beyond, you don't limit yourself to the conventional materials or to the normal formats! In the first part of this post I told you it seems like a great idea to try! Actually I will, I promise, I'm just a little scared hahaha, but I really like the result and more than that, the fact that you're trying to create something unique ;)

Hope you're having an amazing summer!

  14. Great illustrations, I like your explanations. I have to say, that I've always appreciated the concept of using different mediums, even makeup for art. It's not my preference but like you said it has advantages and disadvantages. We had to do a project in design school using what we had in our bag, and the one piece that I loved was my eyeliner crayon, haha it reminded me of charcoal and pastels (two of my favourite mediums aside from acrylic) Your work looks nice.
