How to turn a jar into a plant container? ( DIY of the day: home decor edition)

How to turn a jar into a plant container? ( DIY of the day: home decor edition)

STEP 1. - GET A JAR

If there is something I love, it's DIY projects. If there is something I love even more, it's easy DIY projects. So, today I'm sharing something of the sort. I trust this one is pretty self-explanatory. The old grab a jar and plant flowers and or plants in it trick. As simple as it gets, but it sure works like a charm. All you need is a jar. Alright, you also need dirt and a plant, but that goes without saying.

STEP 2. -CLEAN IT AND REMOVE STICKERS IF THERE ARE ANY

Well, ideally you should remove the stickers (if there are any) and clean the jar before you plant the plants but this time I hurried things a bit.  I had planted the plant before I cleaned the stickers. This  was not a good idea for obvious reasons ( I had to wash it in the sink with the plant already in there). Still, all is well that ends well, right?

                                        STEP 3. (OPTIONAL)- PAINT IT

If you feel like it, you can also decorate the jar with acrylic paints. I sometimes do, sometimes don't, all depending on what effect I'm hoping to create. Jars are a very popular thing for DIY project, I mean, Pinterest is full of fun projects you can do with them ( do you use Pinterest? I remember opening a profile but never figuring out how to use it).  I also use jars to keep my brushes and water (as you can see in the background)

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF USING A JAR AS A PLANT CONTAINER

ADVANTAGES:

- it's simple to use.
- it's cheap (or free if you have some jars laying around home).
- you'll feel good about recycling (if you used the ones you have at home or bought recycled ones).
- glass containers are always fun because you can see the roots of the plant ( I mean if you're into that sort of thing- I totally am).
- it gives you an opportunity to customize the plant container and get creative.

DISADVANTAGES:

- poor drainage
- you will have to be really careful with adding water because as you all know too much water can kill a plant.
- you're somewhat limited with plant choice (better to opt for succulents and cacti as they need only a bit of water, hence fixing that all drainage problem)

  1. I recently finished up a jar of coffee and was wondering what to fill it with - this seems like such a great idea! I want to brighten up my place with little quirky things like this so I might find myself doing exactly this - I'll have to let you know how it goes!

  2. Ooh, I love your idea of painting the jar! I can imagine how much fun you could have hiding the soil with splashes of gold and black paint can you tell I'm obsessed with that colour combination right now?! haha). I hope you're having a lovely start to the week, Ivana :)

  4. A very good idea! I like jars, by the way, and they are so great for so many projects! I loved the idea of using it as a plant container - I actually do it with basil :) It's so good to grow basil at home, and I will plant other seeds in jars, now that I saw your post - you reminded me of that, thank you! Hope you have a beautiful week, dear Ivana! Hugs!

  5. This is such a great idea especially since it is also green and sustainable. I definitely have some old mason jars laying around. I should be using them to grow herbs or something ;p

All your comments mean a lot to me, even the criticism. Naravno da mi puno znači što ste uzeli vrijeme da nešto napišete, pa makar to bila i kritika. Per me le vostre parole sono sempre preziose anche quando si tratta di critiche.
