Happy International Women's day!

Sretan dan žena! Happy International Woman's day ladies!

Third art class and there it was....a statue that I'm quite familiar with because it has been starting at me from the pages of all those elementary school Croatian history books...or better said replica of the statue dating from 3rd century because the actual head is naturally in museum in Zagreb.

While attending an art course I recently started, I had hard time focusing on drawing of still life, but when I saw this fair lady, I thought to myself: 'Finally, something I can draw. A woman..or to be more precise a statue of a woman's head. Either way, what a relief!'

When it comes to Art women are my favourite subjects. As Elaine said in Cat's Eye...I don't paint women because I'm a woman, I paint them because I'm a painter. Painters paint women. That's just the way it has always been.

I'm not exactly quoting but that was pretty much what her character was saying and I think she meant to indicate it's not about feminism. It's about women having something of a mystical quality in themselves.

That novel left such an imprint on me, I find myself often thinking about it. It speaks both of the dark and the light that is to found in our complex gender...So, I thought it would be appropriate to mention it on this day.

...and here is a quote I found fascinating.

“Women know too much, they can neither be deceived nor trusted. I can understand why men are afraid of them, as they are frequently accused of being.” ― Margaret AtwoodCat's Eye

  1. Thank you for reminding me of Atwood's Cat's Eye. It's an amazing book.
And how appropriate for today is your still life of such a strong, female statue.
Yes indeed, there is much to celebrate on International Woemen's Day, and much to continue to strive for.

  2. Totally agree it's hard to focus on drawing of still life. Though that will work efficiently on your art piece in the future!
You have amazing talent and love the sketch!

  17. So nice to see more of your art. It has been a while. And, yes, having lived as a straight man all these decades, I have found women to be magical, confusing and frightening creatures. On the other hand, I find men boring and blah. I would rather be scared than bored :) xoxo

  18. It has been so long since I read Cat's Eye but it is still on my shelves. I love Margaret Atwood. Thanks for sharing your drawings, they are very appealing. When I do a still life I just make it up in my head and don't actually set one up to copy. Is that cheating? LOL I like to paint women too and agree that for some reason they are rather fascinating even though I am a heterosexual woman who loves men. Women do seem to be more complicated which may or may not be a good thing, and female bodies and faces seem to be more interesting to recreate. To me women are the flowers and men are the trees. I love both and truly I really do need, want, love and admire trees, but I am more likely to paint flowers. xoxo

    1. Your comparison of men with trees and woman with flowers really fascinates me. I do think that being complex sometimes works to our advantage and sometimes to our disadvantage, as everything in life.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO IN BLAGAJ ( BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA)

I truly enjoy showing you around Bosnia and Herzegovina. Have you noticed that? You know, there are some really amazing destinations in this country. Today I'll take you to beautiful Blagaj, located only a short drive from Mostar city. Blagaj is a picturesque historical village located in Herzegovina region. This little green river oasis is an increasingly popular tourist destination and not without a reason. Blagaj village has got one of the strongest and most beautiful river springs in Europe. This stunning and potent water spring creates Buna river and is a impressive example of karst river formation. Right next to it you can find a historical dervish house (tekija) that is open all year round.
The dervish house dates back to the sixteenth century.  It placed right next to the entrance to the cave  where the river Buna springs from and it is an incredible site. The cliff over the cave is a very impressive sight as well! You can even go for a boat ride in the cave and see this…

READING UPDATE: ASIMOV'S ROBOT SERIES AND BUY JUPITER SHORT STORY COLLECTION

As some of you might know, one of my favourite science fiction authors is Isaac Asimov. I've always loved science fiction. I have grown up reading it and I never really stopped. Asimov's Robot Series is composed of six novels and thirty seven short stories. Recently I've read a few novels in the Asimov's Robot series and today I'm going to share my reviews of them. I'm also going to share my reviews of some of the novels from this series that I have read in the past. Moreover, I'm going to share my review of Buy Jupiter and other stories by Isaac Asimov, a short story collection that features some stories from his Robot universe. As for the fashion part of the post, nothing I'm wearing is new (and you know it because I signed up for Slow Fashion initiative). I had this yellow top for ages (see how I styled it here and here) and that goes for this olive green pencil skirt and the boromina sandals. However, the bag is new. I forgot about that- it was a g…

FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY: ILLUSTRATED TOTE BAGS REDBUBBLE

I don't know what it is about the combination of tote bags and fashion illustrations that I like so much. Maybe it is simply a matter of combining two things that I love. I adore tote bags for their practicality, I like to carry one with me (often tucked in my regular bag) at all times because you never know. We all know that the typical disposable plastic grocery bags are a huge no-no for the environment, so a tote bag is a must (even if just for grocery shopping).  I personally like to wear tote bags even on occasions that have nothing to do with grocery lists, but to each his own. As for fashion illustration, well I don't have to explain that. I have literally loved fashion illustration for as long as I can remember. Joining my creative skills with tote bags seemed logical! Some of you might remember that I even hand painted some vintage tote bags. In fact, you had the chance of seeing one of those tote bags recently here. As much as I enjoy using textile prints, I also li…
