HOW I GOT BETTER AT ART? BEING SURROUNDED BY BEAUTY DID NOT HURT BUT....

 While I was applying acrylic varnish to my commissioned painting, I realized that I will actually miss having it around. Pondering about why is that so made me think about my art journey. Sure, living in two absolutely gorgeous countries helped  feed my artistic soul, but there were some steps I needed to take to step from observing beauty to creating beauty. Today I'll share three things with you that have helped me improve my art skills significantly. I shared my art tips before, but today I want to share some basic things that really made a difference for me both in developing my art skills and my confidence.  



1. I TOOK ART COURSES (SEVEN OF THEM UP TO DATE)

Taking an art course was definitely a turning point that made me take art more seriously. I've taken seven courses up to date and I plan to take more. Learning from people who teach art for living and are often accomplished artists themselves is something anyone can benefit from (no matter your skill level). Not only did taking art courses helped me become a better artist, it was also a great motivation. It was always so satisfying graduating those art courses and participating in the joint amateur artist exhibitions afterwards. That little 'diploma' ceremony and exhibition we had at the end of every art course at Michelangelo gallery was so satisfying and uplifting. 



2. I USED DIFFERENT REFERENCES (PHOTOGRAPHS AND ART FROM THE MASTERS)

Painting from imagination is and can be a great practice, but using a reference is important skill as well. There are different references you can use, from nature itself (en plain air), to live models, photographs and artworks of old masters. We can all learn a lot from the old masters!






3. I INVESTED  A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT

I used to make art periodically and while sometimes I would invest effort, I was neither systematic nor consistent in developed my art skills.  On overall, the time and effort invest simply wasn't cutting it. For most of my life, I tried to make art without making that initial huge investment of time and effort that needed just to get the basics right. I would sometimes spend a lot of time on creating art but not in a systematic way. It simply wasn't enough. My art skills at my twenties were probably the same as when I was ten. Sure, I had some artistic talent as a kid, but I never developed my skills to any significant level. That's the case with most people. If you don't work on your art skills, they will forever stay on the level you achieved as a ten year old.  Looking back, I can see several milestones I have made and guess what? They all came after investing a lot of time and effort. Yes, you just have to invest a lot of time and effort just to start on your art journey. It does get easier when you reach a certain point and then you can get more creative and relax. Art is worth the time and effort!

    Looking glam in your fabulous Winter outfit, Ivana.
    My friend Liz quit full-time employment to make her living as an artist during the pandemic and has never looked back. Like you, she's always learning and regularly enrols in online courses as well as attending real-life classes - and often hold her own workshops. She said the best thing she did was joining a local artist society, you learn so much from like-minded people even if their style isn't yours. xxx

SPRING IN SPLIT : 3 OUTFITS, ONE WORN FOR AN ART EXHIBITION

Hello! Spring break is officially over for me. Today was my second day back at work and I'm exhausted. The first day was fun, we've all happy to see one another again and all that, but the second day tired me out. The end of the week is far away, too. It takes time to get used to working from 7 to 5 again.  I divided my Spring break between my favourite three places and two countries:  island Hvar & Split (in Croatia) and Mostar (in Bosnia and Herzegovina). I visited an art exhibition and that was fun, too. The art exhibition was by Croatian illustrator Filip Čulić. The exhibition included his illustrations and comic book art. It's open until the end of April, so if you're in Split, check it out (more information here ). I love Split's city library. They always organize fun stuff. WELCOMING SPRING WITH 15 IDEAS TO COMBAT SPRING FATIGUE!

 Welcome Spring! We welcome thy beauty! We also fear thy evil twin- The Spring Fatigue. Like in a telenovela, one rarely comes without the other. Both are inevitable, so let's just welcome the first and try to manage the other until it perishes (in a slow motion) in a fatal car accident. That's what always happened in the Latin soap operas (i.e telenovelas) that were all the rave when I was a kid (and that are the reason why many Croatian people have a pretty good passive understanding of Spanish without even learning it in school, but I digress).  My point is that the beautiful Spring often comes accompanied with Spring Fatigue that can range from mild tiredness to extreme exhaustion. Let there be colour! (outfit post) / Neka bude boja (odjevna kombinacija)

It was over 40 degrees Celsius (that's over 100 Fahrenheit) when these photographs were taken. Seriously! I'm obviously a desert type when I'm able to enjoy being out at midday in a city that is practically an oven. If you did not know Mostar city is surrounded by mountains and hills which pretty much turns it into an urban oven. Yes, this city is a champion of unbelievably high temperatures during the Summer. So, this hat was as much a necessity as a fashion statement. Wearing a hat when temperature is over 100 Fahrenheit is a sound idea, believe me. Speaking of Fahrenheits,  have you read  Fahrenheit 451  by Ray Bradbury? You should, you know, it really is a brilliant dystopian novel. I find it uncanny how much some writers were able to guess the future, down to minute details. Painting of the day (A Lioness) / Slika dana (Lavica)

When I woke up this morning, the first thing I did was walk to the kitchen. Naturally, I was there to make coffee (can’t start a day without it) but while I was at it, I decided to also make a nice cup of warm chocolate. I figured that one can’t have too many warm drinks when the weather is misbehaving. Plus, I wanted something to drink right away, and because preparing coffee my style takes a while (wouldn’t be caught dead drinking instant coffee;)) I opted for warm chocolate first and it was nice but I have to remember to make my own instant coffee again, I’m sure that stuff they sell in shops are full of all kinds of unhealthy stuff. Speaking of health, I have had a cold for a week now, my throat is still sore and my vocal cords are in pitiful state.  I'm not a big fan of my voice right now, but most people seem to like it. Sunny summer days in Mostar city. Simple pleasures in life. The smell of pine trees in the air. (They have a special scent during the Summer. Have you ever noticed that?) Nature Park Blidinje hides a gem of great beauty: magical lake Blidinje. In the presence of this lake, I found myself overwhelmed by a feeling of complete calmness, perhaps for the first time in many days. Enchanted by its beauty, I walked into the lake. While standing in the lake and gazing into the mountains in the distance, I had a feeling that the time itself halted and the great clock of life stood still. Sights to see, places to visit / Znamenitosti za vidjeti, mjesta za posjetiti -----Goranci

My Sights to see, places to visit feature would surely be missing something if I didn't include this little village Goranci in the list of places to visit. This charming little village is situated in the vicinity of Mostar.  I love to go there to espace the city heat.  If you are into cycling, you'd be happy to hear that you can rent a bike for free. You just need to leave your ID in the restaurant Goranci and you can take the bike. There is a wonderful cycling and pedestrian walk so be sure to check it out. As of recently, there is also a beautiful park at your disposal. This park is growing daily as new things are added to it(toys for kids and that sorts of stuff). If you look closely, you'll be able to see that some decorative trees are still being planted at the enterance to this park.  You can read some of my previous posts about this village here , here and here .
