A FISHING BOAT IN HVAR PORT (ACRYLIC PAINTING ON CANVAS)

Today I'll keep things short and simple at this little digital place to call my own. I'm sharing my new acrylic painting with you. If you saw my art gallery at home post, you surely know that I have a passion for painting boats. This boat painting was inspired by an actual wooden traditional boat I saw in Hvar town during one of my last visits. I took a photograph of it so you can also see the photograph reference I used. Scroll down to read and see more.

WORK IN PROGRESS- MAKING OF A PAINTING- HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO PAINT?

THE STYLE- The style for this painting is some kind of semi-realistic impressionism, I guess. I often lean towards impressionist style, I think I always have, especially in landscape painting. Prior to taking art courses here in Mostar, I have never had any training in painting (unless you count observing an artist or two as a kid). Wonderful thing about art is that you are always learning. I'm definitely still learning about art techniques but there are also things I have learned- about my own developing style. For example, I noticed that I'm drawn to bold colours and like to capture light in my painting. I'm often drawn to movement (sea, boats, changing weather, waves etc.). When I took art classes, I learned about general art techniques, not to paint in a particular style. This all might be subject to change, but right now it seems that my temperament and art preferences seem to match this nineteen century group of painters called the Impressionist.

FOCUSING ON THE COLOURS- I took some liberties with the shades of the sea and colours in general. I feel the colour I choose better reflect what I saw with my eyes- as opposed to a photograph reference. As you know, sometimes I like to use a reference and sometimes I don't. It depends on what kind of style of painting I'm opting for. If you want a hyperrealist painting, you should probably use a photograph reference- and one in good quality so you can zoom in all of the details. Unless you have photographic memory, it is hard to recreate extreme details without a photograph reference. If you're going for something different, then a reference is optional. With this painting I concentrated the most on the boat itself and the waves. The rest of the painting was more of an afterthought to be honest. I mean I did paint the background and tried to make it similar to the original one but I wasn't really interested in the background. My principal interest is often the play between the sea and the boat.

THE WORK- How long did it take me to paint this? I'd say something between 4 and 6 hours. I didn't time myself, but I finished it in two or three sittings that were approximately two hours long. I think I finished it in a total of three days. I spend most of the time adding layers to the boat and waves. The sea was the most time consuming part really. Scroll down for wip photographs!

  12. I love Impressionist painting and I can certainly see quite a lot of Impressionist elements and influences in your landscape paintings in general. It is true when you say that photographs often do not capture the colours your eyes are seeing. I love your use of strong colours. I often enhance the colours in my photographs when editing, exaggerating them a little bit, so to speak. And while the traditional boat is the main focus of your painting, I love the way you painted the gently lapping waves and the red-roofed houses huddling in front of the pines in the background. xxx P.S. Thank you so much for your lovely comment on the introduction of my latest post. Your words meant a lot to me, Ivana.

    1. Thank you. I often make my photographs lighter and I feel that brings out the colours more. I just like lighter photos and vibrant photographs so I sometimes enhance the colours a bit as well. I wish I was a proper photographer so I know all about capturing the colours as one sees them- I also lack a quality cam.

  15. That is a lovely painting, Ivana - you have a good eye for light/dark contrast, and I really love the work you did on the waves. I also really admire the contrasting cerulean blue and vibrant oranges - it makes the painting really pop! Well done!

    1. Thank you, usually proportions and sketching are what I struggle with, the part with mixing colours and painting seems much easier to me. I'm glad you liked it.

  17. Really good Ivana!

I like your fashion illustrations, but when you create landscapes and scenarios you nail too! You're very good at creating color combinations in places that come from a inspiration of a real place.

I loved the colors and the fact that you label it as semi-realistic impressionism, the cool stuff is that we are able to learn from the previous styles, but adapting them to your own style and to normal techniques.

  19. You did a wonderful job on the painting. The scene is quite serene and your choice to use more vivid colors to more accurately reflect what was in front of you makes so much sense. What really stands out to me is the movement you were able to create in the water and waves.

  20. What a great post, Ivana! I don't know about impressionism well, but I started to interested in it by your art!! That landscape painting is so lovely, and I would love to Hvar someday...
