BOOK REVIEW AND RECOMMENDATION: ANTARCTICA AHOY! THE ICE BOOK BY JUHAN SMUUL

Image
Hello dear readers and blog visitors! Today we'll talk books again in this little digital place to call my own. More specifically, today I'll share my review for a literary travelogue  Jäine raamat  written by Juhan Smuul (given name Johannes Schmuul), an Estonian journalist and writer. Wikipedia titles this book as The Frozen Book , but from what I managed to find online (on Amazon and so on), there are quite a few English editions of this book until the title: Antarctica Ahoy: The Ice Book .  Supposedly, this is how this book was originally translated. Indeed, I haven't found any editions under the title The Frozen Book but maybe this is a later translation of the title. If you decide to search for it in English, perhaps it is best to try with both titles. This travelogue covers Soviet expedition to Antarctica, but it also devotes several chapters to visits to other countries. Apart from Antarctica, I would say that Australia features most prominently among countries de...

A FRAMED AND VARNISHED SEASCAPE + OUTFIT POST

Image
Selecting a frame and a varnish for a canvas can feel like adding finishing touches. It's like choosing accessories to an outfit, something that can make it look even better and/or more polished. Today I'll show you the varnishing and framing done on a seascape painting I already shared with you (more details HERE ). This canvas depicting Zavala on island Hvar has found a new home and is no longer with me. It was hard saying goodbye to it, because I invested so much time, energy and love into making it. Before gifting it away, I had it framed. I usually have my paintings framed in Michelangelo gallery in Mostar.  This is an outfit I wore to take this painting to the gallery. VARNISHING THE CANVAS- Varnishing serves to protect the colour and the painting itself from the harmful influences of light, dirt and so on. I'm still too new to varnishing to offer any definite advice. All I can give is general advice: make sure the painting is clean before applying the varnish, make ...

A SUMMER TRAVELLING OUTFIT IN YELLOW TONES

Image
Today I'll show you an outfit I wore for a ferry ride from Sucuraj (island Hvar)  to Drvenik. If you read my last post, you'll know that I painted this charming little port village (and more than once, I'll link my art up later).  Anyhow, today we're talking summer travel style. I already covered this topic in detail in this post  from 2019, so I'll just share a few thoughts. Comfort is often a relative term when it comes to clothes.  It's not a matter of simply dividing clothing items into casual or formal. Some people feel best in gym clothes, other in suits or fancy dresses. There really are no rules. We define comfort differently.  However, there are some practical concerns. No matter what your personal style might be, you'll want breathable and light clothing for travelling in summer. Protection against the sun is also a concern when travelling in summer and this can typically be addressed with a wide brim hat and sunglasses. I often wear pencil skirt...

TRAVEL WITH MY ART #19: SUĆURAJ, ISLAND HVAR (CROATIA)

Image
Welcome September! Hello dear readers and fellow bloggers.  How are you doing? I hope you are well and that your September is up to a good start. Today I will share a new painting of mine with you. This post will be the nineteenth post in the category TRAVEL WITH MY ART . What does that mean? It means that once again I used my art to take you somewhere. A few months ago I had this idea of creating an art feature that would be dedicated to travelling i.e. illustrating different places and location. What can you expected to see here? So far, I have mostly painted and illustrated places I have visited myself, but sometimes I also painted places I would love to visit. The star of this feature has definitely been island Hvar. I have painted this magical island many times and truth be told, I'm pretty sure I'll continue doing so, because this island means so much to me. As long as island Hvar continues to inspire me, I will continue painting it.  BOATS IN SUCURAJ- ACRYLIC ON CANVAS ...
