FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY: BROWN AND BLACK OUTFITS

Hello readers. Welcome to another Fashion Illustration Friday Feature on this little digital place to call my own. I have created this weekly feature to share my fashion art and illustrations. Lately I have started posting my fashion illustrations on other days of the week as well, but this Friday art feature is here to stay. Fashion Illustration Friday has got a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

In this post, I will share two fashion illustrations in brown and black palette. Both of them were inspired by outfits I have recently worn. The medium for both of these fashion illustrations is watercolour pencils on paper. I have actually drawn these two black and brown outfits side by side in my sketchbook.  As you can see, I've stopped wearing all black mourning outfits and I'm starting to wear colour again. Brown is a good start. I always enjoyed wearing brown in winter and found it to be the perfect alternative to black (especially for those who might fear the more vivid colours). Anyway, scroll down to read and see more.

U ovoj objavi podijelit ću dvije modne ilustracije u smeđoj i crnoj paleti. Uglavnom, nastavite s čitanjem kako biste saznali i vidjeli više.

THE MAKING OF THESE TWO BLACK AND BROWN ILLUSTRATIONS
I have drawn both of these illustrations yesterday in the period from 8 to 10 am. If I remember correctly, I took brakes. As you can see have I used a reference to sketch, draw and colour them. As usual, the reference photograph was taken by my husband. I made these two illustrations in an elongated style, meaning 1/10 head body proportion that is also known as the ten head figure. A ten head figure is mostly used for fashion illustrating, so it is sometimes known as the fashion figure. Like with the eight head figure, the head is the stating point.

I have written on a few occasions (on my blog) that I don't have a preference and that I employ both the eight and the ten figure in illustration. There is no reason why you shouldn't use the standard eight head figure when drawing fashion illustrations. In fact, I would recommend starting with the eight head figure. Illustrating in elongated style can be more challenging for the beginner, so it might be a good idea to start with normal anatomical figures. Moreover, the elongated figure typically needs getting the hand off.

The most challenging thing about the first illustration was the brown coat. I have illustrated faux fur before, so that was not the problem but I had to make some corrections as I went because I underestimated the size of the faux fur hoodie on this coat. It's quite voluminous, something I didn't pay attention before. That's what I love about making art, it makes you pay attention to everything. Trying to capture the different shades of green on this coat was a challenge as well. When you try to capture details in a limited amount of time, it can be somewhat of a struggle, but I think it's good practice. Sometimes we put in many hours in some illustration. Sometimes we limit ourselves with time and work faster. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. All in all, I was happy with how this first illustration turned out. I was careful when adding water not too add too much. My watercolour pencils illustrations feel a bit like mixed media sometimes. Sometimes I make them more watery, sometimes less. Sometimes they look like a proper watercolour illustration and sometimes like a drawing.
Once I have finished sketching and colouring the first illustration, I have moved onto the second one. Here the challenge was not to get all the black items mixed together. I didn't struggle with illustrating this dress, possibly because I have illustrated it before. Speaking of that, I have also illustrated an outfit with this pair of high brown boots in the past. That must be why I found them so easy to illustrate and was done with them really quickly. The thing I found most difficult to illustrate was the black puffer coat. I was afraid that it might merge with the dress. I hope I've managed to create some difference between the two. Finally, there comes the most fun detail and that is the necklace that is my own creation. I will show this necklace in more detail in some future post, alright? Now, when  it comes to applying water, I tried to keep it in balance. All in all, I think that both of these illustrations are alright. Naturally, if I were to do them again, I think I could do a better job but they as one hour sketches they are fine.

OUTFIT DETAILS- Let's talk outfit details, shall we? I wore both of these outfits for a stroll in Mostar city. I was cozy, comfortable and warm- very important factors when it comes to winter fashion. I do love those sunny winter days, especially when they have a hint of Spring in them. I have already talked to you about the Japanese cherry trees here in Mostar. I love them because they are the first to bloom.
OUTFIT #1- How I wore it before?

THE BROWN MINI BAG- This vintage gift from a friend is one of my all time favourite bags. You can see it featured multiple times in a post devoted to one other clothing item.

OUTFIT #2
THE BLACK PUFFER COAT-  Last time worn HERE. This is another Mana purchase that has proved versatile. I didn't want to get it because it was in the kids department, but I'm glad my husband convinced my otherwise.  If it fits wear it, it's not like anyone is going to read the label.

  2. Your illustrations are stunning. Wishing you a beautiful day my friend.

  3. Your brown coat is fabulous and you look gorgeous wearing it. I always find that brown is such an underrated colour. I also love the way you illustrated it, and I'm hearing you on the problems caused by the size of that faux-fur trimmed hoodie.
The illustration of the black outfit is magnificent! I love how you captured the gentle flow of that dress! xxx

  4. I think you did a really nice job illustrating the volume on the fur collar of your brown coat as well as creating separation between the all black components on the monochrome outfit. That sense of separation is a similar challenge I face as a photographer when I have to capture a scene in which all the colors are similar and I have to play with the lighting and angles.

    1. Thank you Rowena. Yes, I think this sense of separation is challenging in photography in much the same way.

  6. You did a fantastic job of both of these dark outfits, Ivana - both could have gone muddy very quickly, but you've maintained the look of each garment. I'm especially admiring the black one - that's very hard to do!

  7. I really like how you discuss the struggles with your sketches too Ivana. You make it look so easy, but it's nice to know all the background to it.

  9. It's nice you are feeling better and wearing a little more colour and that you were inspired to illustrate these outfits :) I think you did a great job illustrating the monochrome black outfit and showing the different pieces distinctly! :)

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! :)
