FASHION ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY: STANKA ZOVKO SET & DIY NECKLACE

Welcome to another Fashion Illustration Friday post. This time I'm sharing an illustration of one of my own outfits. The outfit I have illustrated is all about spring vibes. Unlike the recent events, the weather has been kind to us. The Japanese cherry trees are in full bloom and it's intoxicating. In fact, I admit to colour coordinating this outfit with Sakura (cherry tree blossoms) in Mostar.  I have paired my magenta Bajina basta coat with a lilac matching polka dot set from Ozz brand by fashion designer Stanka Zovko.  I absolutely love this blouse & skirt set. In fact, I often wear these two pieces (sometimes as separre pieces and sometimes as a set). I've gotten a lot of wear from all of the pieces I got in last summer Ozz haul. It's always good to support local designers. If you remember, I have taken a fashion tailoring and sewing course with this designer back in 2018. Investing in your skills and education is the best investment you can make.

The medium for this fashion illustration is watercolour on paper.  That's the medium I have been working in the most this month. My fashion illustration journey has been an interesting one.  You could say that it has followed me on my blogging journey. I've illustrated everything from my own creations and outfits to runaway looks and designer items. I've also illustrated outfits worn by fellow bloggers and people I find inspiring. As I'm keen on experimentation, my fashion illustrations have taken many shapes and forms over the years. I've made them with flowers, painted them on clothes, printed them on stuff, working with all kinds of media (including make up) in the process. As my art skills developed, so did my fashion illustrations. In fact, my fashion illustrations often reflect my art projects. I'm sure that I've taken things I've learned taking art courses (i.e. more traditional art techniques) and applied them to my fashion illustration. My fashion illustrations are evolving with me and my blog.

The delicate beauty of cherry flowers reminds us that all things come to an end. One second they are here, the other second they are gone. Japanese haiku poet Kobayashi Issa was famous for his poems. Quite a few poems Issa wrote were about cherry tree flowers (you can find his poems translated to English here*).

.散る桜心の鬼も角を折る
chiru sakura kokoro no oni mo tsuno wo oru

cherry blossoms scatter--
even the devil in me

.ちる桜鹿はぽつきり角もげる
chiru sakura shika wa pokkiri tsuno mogeru

cherry blossoms scatter--
snap! the buck's antlers

These images were taken in Mostar, in front of Croatian cultural centre. There are  a few Japanese cherry trees planted there. In Japan, these cherry trees bloom during Sprint time, but because of Mostar's warm climate, Sakura blooms  during Winter. I've actually taken photographs in front of this place a couple of times in the past.

In our culture we refer to cherry blossoms as 'behar' and celebrate it with poems and art. We have adapted this word 'behar' to South Slavic languages from Persian language ( through Turkish) and use it as both a noun and a verb. However, 'behar' refers to different kind of flowers, not just cherry ones so it is not an exact translation of Japanese word Sakura that (as far as I understand refers only to cherry tree flowers). Behar is any type of delicate type fruit tree flower. For example, almond and peach trees have 'behar'. In Asian countries, there are traditions of viewing and celebrating cherry tree flowers that seem to be spreading also to Western countries.

cherry blossom is a flower of many trees of genus Prunus or Prunus subg. Cerasus. They are known as Japanese cherry and sakura ( or さくら or サクラ). They are also a common species in East Asia like China, Korea, especially in Japan. They generally refer to ornamental cherry trees, not to be confused with cherry trees that produce fruit for eating.[4][5] It is considered the national flower of Japan.[6]

Wild species of cherry tree are widely distributed mainly in the Northern hemisphere.[7][8][9] In the mainstream classification in Europe and North America, cherry trees for ornamental purposes are classified into the genus Prunus which consists of about 400 species. In the mainstream classification in Japan, China, and Russia, on the other hand, ornamental cherry trees are classified into the genus Cerasus, which consists of about 100 species separated from the genus Prunus, and the genus Cerasus does not include Prunus salicinaPrunus persica (Peach)Prunus mumePrunus grayana, amongst others.[4] In Europe and North America, however, there were not many wild cherry trees with many large flowers suitable for cherry blossom viewing. Many of them were different from the typical cherry tree shapes and flowers for cherry blossom viewing that people today imagine.[10][8] In mainland China, there has been a culture of viewing plum blossoms since ancient times, and there were many wild species of cherry blossoms, but many of them had small flowers, and the distribution area of wild species of cherry blossoms, which bore large flowers suitable for hanami, was often limited to a small area away from people's living areas.[11] On the other hand, in Japan, Prunus speciosa (Oshima cherry) and Prunus jamasakura (Yamazakura), which bloom large flowers suitable for cherry blossom viewing and tend to become large trees, were distributed in a fairly wide area of the country and close to people's living areas. Therefore, it is considered that the culture of viewing cherry blossoms and the production of cultivars have developed historically in Japan.[11]In Europe, from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, Collingwood Ingram, an Englishman, collected and studied Japanese cherry blossoms, and created various ornamental cultivars, and the culture of cherry blossom viewing began to spread.

MAKING OF A FASHION ILLUSTRATION
Bellow you can see the process of creating this fashion illustration with watercolour pencils. As usual, I first sketched the general outline and then filled in the details. The final part is always adding the water, you'll be able to see on the photographs bellow- the way the drawing becomes a watercolour illustration. When you're working with watercolour pencils, you sometimes get a mixed media feel to an illustration and I like that.
Anyway,  I used one of my own photographs (taken by my husband) as a reference. I slightly changed the position of the body to better capture the flow of the fabric. The challenge here was to capture the shiny quality of this lilac material. I'm not entirely sure I've done it justice. I did try. One thing I managed to capture pretty well were the folds in the fabric, for example those created on the shirt by the placement of my arms (my variation of the Wonder Woman stance). I think  those two times of me painting studies of Michelangelo's Pieta payed off (in the sense they helped me to capture folds in an illustration). I didn't really added polka dots to this illustration because they are kind of tiny and I didn't have the time for that kind of detail. I considered drawing them with a white white pencil but gave up on the idea. Maybe some other time.
The easiest thing to illustrate was this magenta coat because by now I know it by heart.  I've illustrated the coat sand some other items in this book before so that made things easier. I have already illustrated this coat here and here, the burgundy bag here and the boots here.

  7. How magnificent Japanese cherry trees are when they are in full bloom. We'll have to wait a bit longer for this to happen here, and I think it's a true sign that Spring has sprung when they do. It is sad, however, that they only bloom for such a short period of time, which can be even cut short if the weather isn't cooperative. What a lovely idea to match your outfit to those enchanting blossoms! That two-piece must be one of the most versatile ever, and your coat and leather embellished necklace are both stunning pieces as well. Once again captured brilliantly too. You've got such an incredible talent! xxx
