VISIT STOBREČ WITH ME (CROATIA)+ WIW FOR A FAMILY DINNER

Hello, there! In this post, I'll show you around Stobreč, a charming historical village that has become a tourist resort. Located between Split city and Podstrana, this little village is a wonderful destination for a stroll or a day at the beach. It's actually been inhabited since the ancient times. Starting its life as a Greek colony, this village is genuinely historical. It's so closely tied to Split city, you can hardly tell where one ends and the other begins. In fact, administratively Strobreč is a part of Split city. Regular readers of my blog will remember that Split is actually my hometown. I grew up thinking of Stobreč  as a part of Split city. As it develops, it might become more independent, but one can also think of it as suburbs of Split city. I've been to Stobreč a number of times, sometimes for a coffee date and sometimes for live music. A lot of people from Split and Podstrana love to come here to have drinks in the evening or to stroll around in the daytime. Perhaps because it's less touristy? But that might change, as Stobreč is becoming more interesting to tourists. It's still a relatively quiet place, though, and such a lovely place to be in. The views are pretty amazing, too. You can enjoy the view of mountains, the islands and the coast.

Speaking of Strobreč, on Wikipedia I found this interesting piece of information that I would like to look into some day: "The sarcophagus of Lucius Artorius Castus, a Roman prefect thought to possibly be one of the inspirations for some of the legends of King Arthur, was discovered in Stobreč.[5"

A FUNNY NIGHT IN STOBREČ- WHEN A METALHEAD SINGS IN A COVER BAND

Thinking of my past visits to Solin, a funny one came to my mind. Back when I studied at the University of Split, we had this friend who was a metalhead and a singer at a metal band.  He had an amazing voice, too. Anyway, one night he was playing in Stobreč with some other of our friends, with whom he started another band. This band was playing popular Croatian music, the kind of songs everyone knows, even if they don't really listen to commercial music. He was supposed to be a back up singer or something for that night, but the main singer had lost his voice the night before, so he was pretty much on his own. The funny thing is that the band was playing popular Croatian music, and our metalhead friend didn't know any of the lyrics. He had to read them from a paper and it was hilarious. He still sang pretty well. The highlight of the night was when the wind blew away his papers and he couldn't go on with the song. To understand how funny it is, you'd have to know how popular this song is. Literally, everyone knows it. I was certain he'll be able to continue singing but he just stopped. I still remember us laughing about it. It was a fun night.

What kind of music do you like? I have a really eclectic taste, from metal to rock, from folklore music to classical music. It also depends on what I'm doing. Sometimes I like to listen to dynamic music, sometimes something more chill. I guess it would be easier to say what kind of music I don't like. Pop music isn't usually my thing. I don't like songs that are too commercial, either. I avoid songs with lyrics that don't make sense. Lyrics should be meaningful or they shouldn't be there. I wonder what will happen with music in the future. How will AI influence music? We'll leave that subject for some other time and let's get back to my tastes. I tend to listen more to 'old stuff'. In music as well, I have a preference for vintage. I typically prefer listening to originals than covers. Enough about music, let's talk my vintage outfit!

Sustainable fashions files are all about wearing our clothes repeatedly and shopping our closets. I shop my closet all the time, opting to wear things I already have instead of shopping for new things. Having a blog is wonderful because it enables me to prove that I indeed shop my closet all the time. You wouldn't believe how long I go without purchases, often months on end. When I do shop, I try to support local designers or opt for vintage/ second hand options. I always loved shopping my closet and my blog proves just how much I love it!

I let my husband choose my outfit. I was attending this lunch without him, but I still asked for his advice. Perhaps I was not feeling particularly inspired.  Maybe I wanted to keep him included somehow. Anyway, for some reason he really loves this blue mixed print dress.  I actually wore something else earlier in the day while it was cold (this vintage dress), but I changed once the weather improved. This outfit was comfortable and I felt pretty wearing it. However, if I knew how much walking I was going to do, I would have packed my flats for sure.

I STYLED MY HAIR IN BRAIDS
As often, I braided my own hair for a more formal look. I mean I wear my hair in braids pretty often, for example here. I love braiding my hair. Some people don't realize that braids can be a protective hairstyle. Apply some hair oil to nourish your hair and leave it in braids! I often apply some oil before braiding my hair to make the braiding easier and the braids more shiny. Braiding styles might vary greatly from country to country. When braid your hair, make sure you choose the one that best suits your hair texture. For example if your hair isn't thick or is prone to falling out, maybe super tight braids are not for you.

Here you can see how I braided my hair back in 2020. My husband even captured the moment I was untangling my braids. To check out more braid inspiration, follow the links below:

FAMILY LUNCH AT ONE OF STOBREČ'S RESTAURANT

The reason why I visited Strobreč was because I was invited to a First Communion lunch. This month I've been to several First Communion lunches and I might visit more of them before the end of Spring. First Communion is a tradition in some Christian churches. Among Catholics, First Communion is considered quite important and is usually celebrated. It's the third sacrament (following Baptism and First Confession). As you might now, Croatia is a predominately a Catholic country and family gatherings are a common way to celebrate receiving a sacrament. I imagine it's not much different from other European Christian traditions, especially those in the Mediterranean countries.

THESE CAKES WERE HAND MADE BY MY SISTER-IN-LAW'S SISTER

My sister-in-law's sister made these cakes and decorated the restaurant we were having the family lunch in. She did such a great job with baking and the decorations. That's some serious talent. She also sells her creations.

GOING FOR A STROLL IN STROBREČ

The lunch was lovely, but I couldn't eat much because as you might now, I have a chronic illness that makes eating difficult. Moreover, I have scoliosis, which causes me some pain when siting. That's what happened that day. So, I decided to go for a walk with my brother. I documented my walk and took a lot of photographs. Now, you can have a walk around Stobreč with me, too!

  1. You look fabulous, Ivana, well done to your husband for choosing your outfit, he did a great job. I love your hair in braids.
It's strange how braiding is traditional in many places around the world but isn't in the UK. I love watching hair tutorials on Youtube, there's something almost mesmerising about women plaiting their hair.
Stobrec looks lovely, I like the pale stone of the buildings and pavements and anywhere with a combination of mountains and sea is good.
Your sister-in-law's sister's work is beautiful and the story of your metalhead friend is really funny. My musical tastes are pretty eclectic (I'm not a fan of opera or Country and Western or that meandering and overindulgent Prog Rock that was big in the UK in the 1970s).
Fair play to you for walking round in those heels with Scoliosis, my hip hurts just looking at them these days! xxx

P.S. I just found a very lovely comment from you to my last colour-post in my spam file, wich is very annoying, I don't know why "blogger" sorts some comments out and put them there...! And sometimes they don't even turn up für a while... Sorry for that, it's now back and answered.
    Have a lovely day!

  11. Firstly, that outfit is beautiful and your husband's choice of dress was a great one! It's a really flattering shape and the lace detailing is so pretty! The shoes are really stylish too! The braids are really pretty. I wish I were more capable at hair styles.
WOW, those cakes are amazing! Your relative is really talented. I'm sorry you weren't able to eat too much. Is it that your diet choices are very restricted or is it that you just can't eat very much of anything?
I enjoyed seeing that pretty church. x

    1. They are not very restricted when it comes to every day stuff because I can always prepare something for myself, but I often can't eat special occasion food if that makes sense.
