Sights to see, places to visit (Buna) / Znamenitosti za vidjeti, mjesta za posjetiti

Time for another feature of Sights to see, places to visit. I've started this series because I wanted to share places that are dear to me with my readers. I wasn't sure should I include this post in the series, because I often took you to Buna river with me. However, some of you might be new visitors/readers on my blog. In addition, some of you might need a reminder why you shouldn't miss visiting this place. Well, take for the example photograph two and three, that is a river bird and a river snake. I've captured both despite the fact that my last visit was a short one. Futhermore, I photographed some really rare birds here previously and let me tell you I wasn't even trying that hard. Most of the time when I visit Buna, I'm here for two hours maximum because I use it as 'have a moment and breathe place'. It is situated near Mostar, so it is really easy for me to get here. In fact, the two of us have been known to just drive here while it is raining and dine on a sandwich in car, watching the river flow by.  Little moments like that form precious memories. You can read some of my previous posts here, here , here , here and here.

THIS POST SHALL BE UPDATED (IN 2025) BECAUSE I STILL LOVE VISITING BUNA

Besides being a bird-watching paradise, what exactly is Buna?

Well, Buna is a settlement in vicinity of Mostar built around Buna river.

Yes, Buna is also a river.

Both the river and the settlement share a name.

Now, I don't know if you have noticed, but I visit Buna all the time.

You could even say that Buna river is  a favoured destination on my blog.

I have posted about Buna on this blog about a hundred times.

I'm Croatian, but I'm also in love with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I often blog about Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In fact, I consider both of these countries to be my own.

Ever since I came to Mostar, I have fallen in love with Buna.

As I'm sure I told you many times-  Buna one of the first outdoor places (if not the first one) where my husband took me when we started dating.

I wrote more about that in this blog below.

Bird-watching in Buna is an amazing experience!

OLD VISITS  TO BUNA  For example in 2013, I showed you a photograph I took of a beautiful bird Euroasian Hoopoe. The same year, I showed you the spring of river Buna that is said to be the most powerful spring in Europe.  If, you want to see more of this place, you can read about one of my earliest visits here (2013), you can see an outfit post with Buna in the background here (2013), you can read about spring time and my love of flowers here (2017), you can read about my most recent visit here (2017), you can read about winter magic in Buna revisited post here (2016), you can read about summer magic here (2015). Bellow you can find even more links to some of my older posts about Buna and my visits to this place:  April 6th, 2013November 28th, 2016,  May 16th, 2017,  June 10th, 2018,  January 24th, 2018,  May 18th, 2018,  March 20th, 2019March 27th, 2019

IF YOU ARE VISITING BUNA DON'T FORGET THAT BLAGAJ IS LOCATED A SHORT DRIVE AWAY!

I IMMENSELY ENJOYED EVERY VISIT TO BUNA...AND THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS IF NOT MORE!

We do visit Buna regularly. We cherish each visit. Buna is my happy place.

Now, about the outfit. I've proven that I can wear black as long as I'm allowed some colourful accessories. I'm not sure if this dress could be called vintage. It is from the eighties, but today some call clothes from nineties vintage, so let's say it is. It seems there are a few definitions of that term and perhaps they are all correct in their own way. I got this lovely maxi as a gift from my niece in law and I wore it previously here. I decided to pair it with these gorgeous Peko heels because they have a retro vibe I really like. Both of the necklaces I'm wearing I designed and made myself a decade ago when I first got interested in making necklaces. I was going for an Art deco chic here, because I absolutely love that period  both in art and fashion.

Pokušavala sam pomalo dočarati Art deco jer jako volim taj period i u modi i u umjetnosti.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION FILES- HOW I WORE THESE ITEMS BEFORE?

THE BLACK MAXI DRESS (vintage, hand made, passed on to me by a family member)

See how I wore this black maxi dress with a slit before:

THE GREY MARY JANE HEELS - from Peko.

These heels are actually platform heels, making the high heel easier to wear. Moreover, the heel itself is a thick one, making this pair quite durable. It's not extremely high, either.
Honestly, these are probably the most comfortable heels in my closet.
They are extremely versatile and look good with everything.
I often wear them with dresses and skirts, but they look great paired with trousers as well.

DIY NECKLACES - I actually love to make jewellery and I'm pretty good at it.

HANDMADE AND DESIGNED BY YOURS TRULY- THE GREEN NECKLACE (MADE FROM WIRE, BEADS AND FIMO MASS)

SEE HOW I WORE THE GREEN NECKLACE AS A CROWN IN THIS  2015 OUTFIT POST FEATURING A GEOMETRIC DRESS AND A FAUX LEATHER COAT (AND SHOT IN MOSTAR) AND IN THIS WINTER STYLING SHOT IN GORANCI IN 2014

Art Deco, movement in the decorative arts and architecture that originated in the 1910s and 1920s in western Europe and developed into a major style in the United States during the 1930s. Its name was derived from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925, where the style was first exhibited. Art Deco design represented modernism turned into fashion. Its products included both individually crafted luxury items and mass-produced wares, but, in either case, the intention was to create a sleek and anti-traditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication.

The distinguishing features of the style are simple, clean shapes, often with a “streamlined” look; ornament that is geometric or stylized from representational forms; and unusually varied, often expensive materials, which frequently include manufactured substances (plastics, especially Bakelite; vita-glass; and ferroconcrete) in addition to natural ones (jade, silver, ivory, obsidian, chrome, and rock crystal). The characteristic features of the style reflected admiration for the modernity of the machine and for the inherent design qualities of machine-made objects (e.g., relative simplicity, planarity, symmetry, and unvaried repetition of elements).

Among the formative influences on Art Deco were Art Nouveau, the BauhausCubism, and Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Decorative ideas came from American IndianEgyptian, and early classical sources as well as from nature. Characteristic motifs included nude female figures, animals, foliage, and sun rays, all in conventionalized forms.

Most of the outstanding Art Deco creators designed individually crafted or limited-edition items. They included the furniture designers Jacques Ruhlmann and Maurice Dufrène; the architect Eliel Saarinen; metalsmith Jean Puiforcat; glass and jewelry designer René Lalique; fashion designer Erté; artist-jewelers Raymond Templier, H.G. Murphy, and Wiwen Nilsson; and the figural sculptor Chiparus. The fashion designer Paul Poiret and the graphic artist Edward McKnight Kauffer represent those whose work directly reached a larger audience. New York City’s Rockefeller Center (especially its interiors supervised by Donald Deskey; built between 1929 and 1940), the Chrysler Building by William Van Alen, and the Empire State Building by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon are the most monumental embodiments of Art Deco. During the 1930s the style took over South Beach in Miami, Florida, producing an area known as the Art Deco historic district.

Although the style went out of fashion in most places during World War II, beginning in the late 1960s there was a renewed interest in Art Deco design. Into the 21st century Art Deco continued to be a source of inspiration in such areas as decorative artfashion, and jewelry design.

“And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night.

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter—to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning——

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
 F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

“He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced--or seemed to face--the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.”

 F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”
 F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

How do you like this styling?

Does it have Art Deco vibes?

Do you like DIY projects?

Buna is a dream in blue and green.

As always, I have my husband to thank for these photographs.

He really has an eye for photography, doesn't he?

I love how these portrait photographs came out.

Thank you for visiting and commenting! Take care.

  10. That place is so dreamy! I love it! I wish I could be there right now. So picturesque. I like your outfit a lot, too. You Seem to fit in your environment. Vintage gets "younger" every year. I sell on Etsy, so the allowed items to be sold on there for vintage literally changes every year. This year, it is technically vintage if it is prior to 1996.

Mesto je stvarno dušu dalo za predah, već vidim da bih stalno išla tamo. Priroda je očaravajuća, a priča o kiši i sendviču mi je tako posebna. Baš takve mali stvari prave ralzliku. Ti izgledaš očaravajuće zaista, crna ti jako lepo stoji a osvežila si haljinu prelepim detaljima. I ja volim Art deco :)
