Shall we dance? Why should we dance? (fashion illustration of the day) / Hoćemo li zaplesati? Zašto bismo trebali plesati? (modna ilustracija dana)

Shall we dance? Before you even answer that question, here is another one. Why should we dance? Actually, there are a number of reasons why we should dance. So, even if you're not a dance lover, you might want to consider at least dancing in the privacy of your own home or when nobody is watching (I'm always dancing when nobody is watching). Anyhow, here are five reasons why you should consider /reconsider being up for a dance or two:

1. Dancing has been proven to reduce anxiety. I think it is because it functions both as physical release of body tension and an emotional activity. Listening to our favourite music often has a relaxing effect on us. Furthermore, dancing is an exercise method that is relatively stress free. Therefore, dancing can be used as method of reducing our stress levels.

2. Dancing is not only good for our physical well being, it is also proven to have psychological benefits. It can improve our mood. The mathematics of this is quite simple. Physical activity is beneficial for our body and our mood, hence dance is beneficial for our bodies and mood. It is a win-win situation. There is such a thing as dance/movement therapist, you know? If there is a whole therapy theory behind it, you know there are ways you can use it for yourself. So, give it a try. Postoje terapeuti pokreta i plesa, jeste li to znali? Ako iza nečega postoji cijela terapeutska teorija, onda znate da to možete koristiti za sebe. Tako da, probajte.

3. Dancing has had a liberating effect on many. Now, this 'liberating effect' is somewhat of a mystery. It is hard to define, isn't it? Why have human beings always danced? If we look at our earliest myths, often they include dancing. Think of lord Shiva's dance of destruction and creation. What is it about dance that sets us free? Perhaps the movement? Getting lost in the moment? In this modern world that demands from us a lot of planning, dancing seems to be one of those activities that allows us to live in the moment.  Ples je na mnoge imao oslobođavajući učinak. Zapravo, ovaj osjećaj slobode je pomalo misterija. Teško ga je definirati, zar ne? Zašto su ljudska bića uvijek plesala? Ako pogledate najranije mitove, oni često u sebi nose ples. Razmislite o gospodu Šivi i njegovom plesu stvaranja i uništenja.

4. Dancing can make us feel better about our bodies. Recently, I wrote about body perception (here). The psychological and emotional benefits of dancing, connected with psychical ones can be quite potent. Together they can be utilized to make ourselves feel better about our bodies. Turn out your favourite music and move. Before you know it, you might experience something you will like- you know, like in that song: I like to move it, move it.

5. Dance improves our balance and posture. This might not seem like much to you, but hey it is always good to reduce our chances of breaking a limb or too. While we're young, we're less likely to fall and injure ourselves, but the changes of actually falling and injuring ourselves increase significantly with age.  Dancing can help prevent that. It can also fight of dementia. True, this is true of any psychical activity, but as I explained dancing does come with a set of additional benefits.  Ples poboljšava našu ravnotežu i držanje.

Enough with the writing, let's just say a few words about the image in this post. Today I'm sharing another fashion illustration with you. The medium is watercolour on paper. I cheated a little and used a brown marker to do the eyes (because the frame is quite small and it was a challenge doing it with a brush). I illustrated a lady wearing a blue gown. Isn't it lovely? I always liked heart shaped dresses and tops. I wish I knew how to make it. I would love to have a blue gown like this. Who wouldn't? For now, I'm more focused on making fashion illustrations (and other kind of illustrations and paintings) than on making the actual clothing items, but one day who knows?

  20. I love dancing, dear Ivana! I am a certified flamenco dancer, I used to present myself in big theaters :) So I really really love to dance! And yes, it's liberating, it makes us more conscious about our postures, about our bodies... and it is good for our halth, mentally and physically speaking! I loved your illustration, as usual, and using rose petals to photograph it was excellent! I love the blue gown and the brown marker resonates with me - I normally only wear brown eye pencils :) Lovely post, dear Ivana, and thanks for your amazing support, always, but during the last 2 weeks even more! Hugs and regards!

  23. Yes, freestyle dancing is very liberating. I piloted an expressive dance club with my 5-6year olds at school last year where they used chiffon scarves and were allowed to move freely with them. They really enjoyed the feeling that came with that liberty. I love swing dancing and English country dancing, it brings me real joy.
The illustration is beautiful. I had (and in text, still have) a dress in that shade though it has a straight neck line!
