A PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN WITH LONG DARK HAIR (WATERCOLOUR PENCILS)

 First of all, thank you all for your kind messages on my last post. In this post, I will share a new watercolour portrait sketch with you. I didn't use a reference for this one, I just sketched it from my head. The idea was to practice 3/4 side portrait. I feel like I need all the portrait practice I can get. I remind myself that quick portrait practice still counts.  I'm still not very focused on portrait making, but I do like doing these quick portrait sketches. I know I will need to invest a lot more time and effort if I want my portraits painting to start looking as good as my landscape paintings, but I feel these quick sketches help me stay in shape until I set aside enough time to get better at portrait art. Right now, I still don't have a definite style when it comes to portraits. Anyhow, this one was actually supposed to remain just a quick sketch, but at one point I just decided to finish it. So, I added more detail and basically turned it into a quick portrait.

 What more can I say about it? It depicts a woman with dark eyes and a long dark hair wearing a blue dress. The medium is watercolour pencils on mixed medium paper (A4 format). Both the watercolour pencils and the mixed media sketchbook are from Staedtler (not sponsored in any way, just what I'm using at the moment). I often use watercolour pencils when I want to work quickly. I like how this lady turned out, but I'm not sure will I frame it or will she end up in my blue folder. I create so much art, it's impossible to hang it on walls.  So, typically I only hand my landscapes. Someday, maybe I'll get good enough at portraits to be tempted to replace my landscape paintings with them. You never know. A fun thing about owing art is that you can always switch it up and change the placement of your art pieces. You know what they say, home is where your books and paintings are. Sometimes I like to keep the same paintings on my wall for years and sometimes I feel like changing them up a bit.

Za ovu skicu nisam koristila nikakvu referencu, samo sam je skicirala iz glave. Ideja je bila vježbati 3/4 portret. Osjećam da mi je potrebna sva portretna praksa koju mogu dobiti. Podsjećam sebe da se i brzi rad na portretima još uvijek računa. Još uvijek nisam previše usmjerena na izradu portreta, ali volim raditi ove brze portretne skice. Znam da ću morati uložiti još puno više vremena i truda ako želim da moje slikanje portreta počne izgledati jednako dobro kao moje slike krajolika, ali osjećam da mi ove brze skice pomažu da ostanem u formi dok ne odvojim dovoljno vremena da postanem bolja u portretima. Trenutno još uvijek nemam određeni stil kada su u pitanju portreti. U svakom slučaju, ovaj portret je zapravo trebao ostati samo brza skica, ali u jednom trenutku sam ju jednostavno odlučika završiti. Dakle, dodala sam više detalja i tako to pretvorila u brzi portret.

 Što više reći o ovoj slici? Prikazuje ženu tamnih očiju i duge tamne kose koja nosi plavo ruho. Medij su akvarel olovke na višenamjenskom papiru (A4 format). I akvarelne olovke i papir za razne medije su iz Staedtlera (ni na koji način nisu sponzorirani, samo su eto ono što trenutno koristim). Često koristim akvarel olovke kada želim brzo raditi. Sviđa mi se kako je ova dama ispala, ali nisam siguran hoću li ju uokviriti ili će završiti u mojoj plavoj  fascikli. Stvaram toliko umjetnosti da je nemoguće objesiti sve na zidove. Obično na zidove stavljam samo svoje pejzaže. Jednog dana, možda ću postati dovoljno dobra u portretima da dođem u iskušenje da njima zamijenim svoje pejzaže. Nikad ne znaš. Zabavna stvar vezana uz posjdovanje umjetničkih djela je to što im uvijek možete promijeniti raspored. Znate kako kažu, dom je tamo gdje su vaše knjige i slike. Ponekad volim držati iste slike na zidu godinama, a ponekad ih poželim malo promijeniti.





Anyway, this is the painting I'm sharing today. I added some dried yellow roses when I was taking these photographs. I love to dry flowers and sometimes I use it to add a 3D effect to  illustrations (for example here, here and here). If you enjoy creative photography, it's definitely something to try. Below are a few more portrait collages just in case anyone wants to see a bit more of my old portrait sketches. I don't feel I'm getting any better with portraits, but right now it's all about not getting worse and about keeping up with the practice. The same thing can be said about my fashion illustrations. I'm not focused on them right now, but I want to keep those skills I developed so far.

Obožavam sušiti cvijeće i ponekad ga koristim za dodavanje 3D efekta ilustracijama (poveznice u engleskom dijelu teksta). Ako uživate u kreativnoj fotografiji, svakako je to nešto što možete isprobati. Ispod je još nekoliko kolaža s portretima koje sam naslikala za slučaj da netko želi vidjeti još mojih starih skica. Ne osjećam da postajem bolja kada su u pitanju  portreti, ali trenutno je naglasak da se ne pogoršavam i da nastavim s praksom. Isto se može reći i za moje modne ilustracije. Trenutno nisam usmjerena na njih, ali želim zadržati one vještine koje sam do sada razvila.

    I learned how to do faces back in school, but I have never been good at them - so I'm very impressed with your skill, Ivana! Practicing is the least fun part of anything (art included), but it's so necessary so that we don't lose that "muscle". I like seeing your gallery of faces - some of them are very good (you're great at capturing expression around the eyes). I feel like the cheeks areas are your biggest challenge?

      I think I need to work on planes. The only thing I feel I can get right are the eyes and the eyebrows- sometimes also lips. Everything else- the cheeks, the forehead, the chin needs much more work. Not to say anything of the ears. Can you tell I covered them up in this one?:)

    Easy to see mediterranean features in your portrait (I mean the woman with the blue shirt above), considering the woman's skin color and dark brown hair and eyes. I also like the portrait of that East Asian woman.

    P.S.: Glad to hear you enjoyed my last post about Naples' unusual cemetery and its old tradition. Many women who live there are still involved in cleaning the skulls, as they continue to believe in things that are not real.
    If you came to Naples I would be honored to show you that fantastic place, where you can see a combination between religion and superstition.

In this post, I'll review " Forgiveness Day" , a science fiction novella that is a part of the Hainish Circle. Published in 1995, "Forgiveness Day " won multiple awards. This novella is often published together with her other novellas from the Hainish Circle, and it can be find in various editions of Four Ways to Forgiveness and Five Ways to Forgiveness.   Thematically, this novella is a part of five stories featuring two Hainish planets, but it can definitely be read on its own. I think it functions well as a stand alone novella. I listened to it in audio form, and I didn't have any problems following the story.  The world building is simple and effective.  Hello dear readers and fellow bloggers! It's almost ten. I've had a long week and I'm quite tired and sleepy. However, I'll try to wrap this post up for you tonight. What kind of post? Well, a post about art. Fashion art to be more precise.  I've been on a roll lately with my art posts.
