HOW TO WEAR ART & HOW TO ACQUIRE WEARABLE ART?

We're back to beach Soline.  I'm going to give you an answer to question: 'How to wear art?' Now, when I say art, I mean art in literal sense, as if wearing clothing items with paintings or illustrations on them.  Have you ever wondered about that? How to wear one's own paintings or art you like? There are a few ways you can go about it. Firstly, you can buy textile paints and paint directly on a clothing item or your choice. Secondly, you can hire an artist to do it for you and get them to paint on the clothing items of your choice. Thirdly, you can buy a hand painted clothing item from an artist you like. I'm sure there are designers and artisan out there who sell their hand painted clothing pieces. Fourthly, you can order art you like from a printing company. There are many printing companies online from which you can order art printed on clothes (in various styles). Finally, you can also take a clothing item directly to a local printing company of your choice and have it printed (something I have been thinking about but haven't yet tried). From the above, I have tried two things: painting on clothes myself and ordering a printed clothing item  with my painting from an online company.
WEARING: A PALE BLUE T-SHIRT WITH A BOAT PAINTING PRINT, AN OLD HAND PAINTED WHITE DENIM SKIRT AND A PAIR OF STARTAS SNEAKERS
Above you can see me wearing a printed t-shirt (with my art) that I bought for my significant other but that I sometimes steal from him. I paired the t-shirt with hand painted denim skirt. This skirt is old but I'm not sure is it vintage as there is no label on it. I'm pretty sure I inherited this white denim skirt but from whom I'm not sure. I painted on it some time ago. My niece was impressed (two or three years old at the time) as she was convinced I painted her, her mother and myself. I didn't- or at least I didn't do it intentionally. I think most artists paint themselves and people around them most often, often depicting faces they have seen and that are familiar to them.
MY PREFERRED WAY TO WEAR ART
My preferred way to wear art is just to directly paint on clothes but then again for me painting with fabric paints is a piece of cake. I'm aware that not everyone is handy with a brush, but there are also alternatives. You can trace the design you like on clothes and then paint it over it. Naturally, if you're choosing an art piece from a contemporary artist, you should pay for it, but if you're doing a reproduction of an old work of art (like Mona Lisa for example) then you don't have to pay Leonardo for it because he is not around anymore.  I mean there are pros and cons to everything. By painting on clothes, you can be sustainable because it will allow you to paint on clothes you already have in your closet as well as on vintage and second hand clothes. There is also an option of finding a local printed who will print art on clothes you already have- that's another great sustainable option that doesn't involve buying new clothes. However, if you buy designs directly from an artist or via a company that pays a percentage to an artist, they you get to support living artists and living artists probably need your support more than dead ones. As I said, every method of acquiring art on clothes has its advantages and disadvantages. I have thought long and hard about this you see.
Obviously, since I like doing art, I also enjoy painting on clothes- it is really the same thing, isn't it? A typical canvas is made from cotton, so for me taking a brush and painting on a cotton t-shirt is not only natural it is also enjoyable. The pros of this DIY project are pretty obvious. When you paint on clothes (or/and accessories) you end up with a personalized item. Who wouldn't want that? What are the cons? Well, one of the downsides of painting with fabric/textile paints is that  you might not be happy with the result. This DIY project can actually turn out less  then satisfactory. I know, this might sound odd coming from someone who is always cheering for DIY projects and writing about them, but I'm also all for honesty. I don't regret painting a single clothing item or accessory but before you do it yourself, ask yourself will you regret it? Obviously, there is always a choice that a DIY project will not end up well. What is my advice? Think about what you really want.  I'm no stranger to colour and pattern, it's something I've always enjoyed, it's a part of my style, so when I do DIY projects connected with fashion, it is only natural that this 'love for colourfulness' translated to my fashion style as well. If you sense of style is more minimal and classical, you'll probably have to think for a bit, to figure out about how this project of DIY painting of clothes can work for you. If you're not too keen on colour, you might want to use only black and white textile paints. Similarly, if you're not into bold designs and print, keep your 'painting' minimal. Now, the advantage of printing companies is that you can get a more accurate design of different media (like oils- you can't paint with oils directly as long as I'm aware of). Take for example the t-shirt I ordered for my husband. The print looks just like my watercolour sketch. I actually liked the printed t-shirt better than the original painting that was done on a smaller scale (approximately A4).
HAND PAINTED DENIM SKIRT DOING DOUBLE DUTY AS A DRESS
I actually wore this denim skirt to Soline beach as a dress. I don't usually wear something so revealing and short without leggings, but I wore this to beach Soline as it was hot. You know, it's summer. Bellow you can also see how I wore this denim skirt in the past while it was all white (its original colour).
OTHER WAYS I WORE THIS PRINTED T-SHIRT

*This post is not a collaboration with Redbubble site. I bought this t-shirt with and payed for its shipping with my own money.  I ordered it from my own shop there (obviously since it's my own painting) but I still had to pay for it. That is how these printing online shops work, they print on demand so obviously you pay for everything you order, even if its your own design. I'm  also not currently a part of any Redbubble affiliate program. There also don't have any artist discounts that I'm aware of. I really don't have an opinion formed about this company yet. I cannot compare it to other similar companies because I haven't tried them yet. I feel like I haven't ordered enough stuff from them to give them a real recommendations. I mean the stuff I ordered was nice but I want to explore the other opinions as well. Do you have any printing companies to recommend?
Thank you for reading, visiting and commenting. Have a lovely day!

  1. You are talented, Iwana! Thank you for sharing many great ideas about art T-shirts! I didn't know we don't use to pay for the Leonardo!!

  2. One of my friends uses redbubble (I think that's the name) for printing her art on bags and scarves. It's pretty cool.

I've done some DIY but not too much on clothes - I'm too worried about ruining them. I like your skirt, though - it looks awesome. I should just pick up something cheap that I don't care about and TRY it!

Lovely views, as always, Ivana! Enjoy the summer!

  3. I think it's great you have a tee with one of your paintings printed on it, and that you were able to rework that skirt, it's so pretty with the red on it now! I am not very creative or talented with DIYs so I haven't altered any clothes - I'm all for the buying pieces already made, haha! It does mean I get less when I'm opshopping as I only thrift pieces that work for me off the rack, instead of buying and hoping they can be altered to fit later!

Hope your week is going well :) It's turned into a rainy one here!

  5. We studied this as a topic at uni last year, all about how fashion can be perceived as art or whether it is a form of art itself! Really interesting!

  11. Love your printed clothing! They add such a flair to your clothes! I usually buy material with such a print and take them to my local tailor with a style in mind for her to sew. It always comes out amazing! Plus they give such a different vibe.

  12. First of all, you are looking so happy and relaxed in these photos. The blue tee-shirt with your boat painting is gorgeous. I remember you showed it to us before, as I had to smile when I read you sometimes steal it from your husband. I absolutely adore the denim skirt worn as a dress! xxx

I've block printed clothes and spray painted leather jackets and handbags, I've never been able to draw or paint (except furniture!) xxx

  19. Hello dear Ivana, hope you had a very week so far and happy Friday :)

This article was very interesting for me, since right now as an illustrator I am trying to put my work into other surfaces and formats, actually I am planning to open a store but I found the proper way to display my art into some materials, and getting information from fabrics is really complex, there are many things to know right?

I like how your art looks on the t-shirts, all your illustrations look terrific and amazing! A few months ago I saw you were selling your stuff, hope you can manage to put your artwork into the next level!

All the best and keep enjoying the summer!

    1. I opened by Redbubble shop in 2018 and so far I only sold 5 things, two of which I bought myself so I cannot say it was success. Getting info about materials does take a lot of time. It is easier to go via printing company but then they keep almost all of the earrings so it would be better if you could do your own thing and open your own shop. Maybe you can start with Etsy or open your own shop. Maybe there is a local store you can collaborate with.

  20. It's so interesting that you posted this because yesterday, I discovered a wonderful clothing company called 'We are hairy people" https://www.wearehairypeople.co.uk/ who do just that- paint onto clothing. I saw this wonderful squirrel dress and I was blown away by this idea and how exquisite the art is! I DID want to do a painting project with my orange silk shirt to make a replica of Clara's eye-print shirt originally but then I got scared that I would ruin it!

    2. You can try sketching on a silk shirt first. I actually never painted on silk so I don't have any tips to share but generally speaking making a sketch might be a good idea. You can trace a design.
