MONDAY FASHION ILLUSTRATION: VERSACE READY TO WEAR SPRING 2022 COLLECTION

Hello readers!  It seems that fashion illustrations are taking over my blog. If you own original fashion art why not share it, right? Today I'll share with you two fashion illustrations inspired by Versace RTW Spring 2022 collection. I came across this Ready-to- Wear Versace collection while I was browsing Vogue. I was intrigued enough by this collection to want to illustrate it, so I set myself to work. I even watched the whole runaway show in order to get a better sense of the clothes as that can help with the illustrating (Youtube link in case you want to see the entire collection too).

I would say thus it was in many ways a typical Versace collection. One of the first things that comes to my mind when I think of Versace statement design is a bold form fitting dress. This collection had plenty of those kind of dresses plus some nice tailored suit options that I enjoyed. I always love a good statement blazer so I was happy to see some of those. When it comes to colours, Versace brand is known for its vivid colours and patterns. The scarf patter in particular seems to still be going strong. However, at the same time Versace brand is famous for their attractive little black dresses. All in all, this Versace Spring RTW collection was an interesting mix of bold colours and black. As I said, black is a part of the brand's aesthetic. Nevertheless, I was surprised to see so much black items and designs featured in a spring collection. I guess one does expect flowery vibes in the spring? Well, there were no flowery vibes in this collection.

As for my impression after watching the video of  collection  on the runaway, I can say that I what enjoyed seeing the most were the clothes. The music was not my kind of tea and the shoes looked dreadfully uncomfortable. The models were lovely, though. It's nice that these days one can see more than one body type represented on the runaway. I'm not really an expert on pop culture or up to date with celebrities, but I noticed a fair number of celebs on the runaway. I would say that the brand is trying to appeal to the younger generation while at the same referencing its famous past and brand heritage (for example by welcoming Naomi Campbell who was one of the supermodels who helped propel it to glory in the nineties). It is a business strategy that makes sense and that Versace seems to apply both when it comes to design themselves and the promotion of the brand. Scroll down to see and read more.

MAKING OF VERSACE INSPIRED FASHION ILLUSTRATIONS
As you can see bellow, I first sketched these two looks with watercolour pencils and then I added water. I didn't have an adequate shade of blue for the blue dress so I just used the one I had. Both of these models look familiar to me but I don't know their names. As you can see, I placed these two fashion sketches side by side. All in all, I'm happy with how these two illustrations turned out. The medium is once again watercolour colour pencils on paper. How do you like these illustrations and designs?

The model on the left is wearing a two piece black set that is all about being glam in all black. Do you notice the safety pins on the top? I couldn't help noticing gold safety pins on the Versace designs from this collection. This 'safety pin' reappearance made me think of the black Versace dress Elizabeth Hurley wore to a film premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994. Often referred as 'that dress', this Versace creation was so talked about it made Hurley instantly famous. I was born in 1985 so I grew up in the nineties. Those of you who are younger might not remember this 1994 safety pink black dress look, but if you payed attention to the fashion in the nineties, that was the dress. It is interesting to see 'reincarnations' of 'that dress' in this Spring 2022 collection.
The model on the left is wearing a bold blue dress and isn't she gorgeous? I already wrote about my impressions of this collection and how it was a mix of black and vivid colours. This blue dress is certainly eye-catching. I can definitely imagine myself wearing something like this. That would be the two looks I decided to illustrate, one black two piece set and one blue dress.

MY FAVOURITE LOOKS FROM VERSACE SPRING 2022: VIVID COLOUR VS. ETERNAL BLACK
Bellow you can see more collages with looks that inspired me. Moreover, you can see my fashion illustrations in more details. If you want to try your hand at fashion illustrations, you can check some of my old posts on the subjects. As for the outfit I'm wearing bellow, it's one more example of me shopping my closet.

  2. I love Vogue's archives of their collections - I usually don't go straight there, and instead rely on Go Fug Yourself, and Tom and Lorenzo for looks at runway lines. I love that blue dress and the pink platform loafers they are showing with it (I predict everyone will be into platform loafers over the next season +). I was in my 20s during most of the 90s and vividly remember Elizabeth Hurley's dress and the stir it created!

I've always been a fan of the over-the-top colours and patterns of Versace - I took note of the scarf-patterned pajama top worn over a colourful bra, with matchy trousers - I'll be copying that look (only with a real top, not a bra!) this spring with my Zara knock-off version of the top!

Love seeing your illustrations, Ivana - you're so talented!

  4. Fantastic illustrations again, Ivana! They always say that if a designer is short on ideas then they should find a 25 year old fashion magazine and rehash the clothes with a slight variation.
I was 24 when the 1990s kicked off and had been wearing vintage clothes for ten years by then, Versace wasn't my thing although being a fan of Greek mythology I loved the Medusa head logo! xxx

    1. That's so true. One can always get inspired by past fashion trends. It's fun seeing old fashion trends being reinvented.

  5. I like the looks you chose to illustrate and you captured the clothing and the movement of the models well. It is refreshing to see a wider representation of different body types as it is far more realistic.

  8. I'm loving your fashion illustrations as always. However, I can't say I'm particularly enamoured with the collection itself. It is true though that the blue dress is a stunner, and the neon pink suit worn with the neon orange top is great too. I hope your week is going well! xxx

Savršen outfit i crteži.

    Baci!

  11. Hi
As I'm older than you, I know what you're talking about ahahah!! From the movie, the actress and Naomi! I think this is a good marketing strategy to capture the new generations and keep the older ones! I love the bright colors, black as you know I'm not a fan, but I can understand your attempt to imitate the Versace silhouette and you did it, you look very elegant! The models chosen are very bold and beautiful, I loved the illustrations!
