FRIDAY FASHION ILLUSTRATION: A WATERCOLOUR SELF- PORTRAIT IN MODIGLIANI STYLE

It's Friday and that means it's time for Fashion Illustration. Today I'm back with a watercolour illustration that is more portrait fashion illustration than a classical fashion illustration, meaning it depicts the upper part of the body, not the whole look. Sometimes it is good to focus more on the face and the details. The medium is watercolour pencils on A4 mixed media paper. The watercolour pencils I used are by Steadler brand and the mixed media paper (250g/m2) is by Royal talens (the links are neither sponsored nor affiliated, just trying to be helpful). I'm not focused on selling originals of my art right now, but if someone is really interested and wants to offer a fair price, you can always drop me an email. As for prints of my art, they are available for sale on Redbubble and Arthaus. Scroll down to see the making of process and well as photo references I used for this post.

Making of this fashion illustration wasn't a terribly difficult process. It was smooth sailing for most part. I was browsing some of my art on Pinterest and looking for some art inspiration when it occurred to me that I could illustrate a photograph my husband took of me. I liked the hair and the bow on that photo, so I decided to use it as a reference. I turned the grey silk shirt into a red blouse for the purposes of this fashion illustration. I sketched the face and the hair with watercolour pencils, proceed to add more details and finalize the illustration by adding water. Thus I turned this watercolour sketch into a watercolour painting. Sometimes painting tires me more, sometimes less. I suppose it depends on many factors. I wouldn't do it if I didn't want to, that's for sure. Anyhow, this illustration would be what I could call my style. I wrote Modigliani style in the title of this post because that is what many people connect with this kind of elongated faces. I think I've been leaning toward this style before I heard of Modigliani. When it comes to artists that influenced my personal style, most of them were Croatian probably because that's the first art I came in contact with.

Looking back at these photographs, I'm amazed at my husband's portrait photography talent. There is really a range of emotion captured here. I really don't thank him enough for all the amazing photographs he has made of me over the years. It is true that taking photographs and nature trips has been a routine for us since we started dating and something that isn't blog related as such but it has become a part of this blog. We had been taking photos and enjoying local travel years before I started this blog or even considered blogging. Still, it makes sense to thank him because without his photography this blog wouldn't be the same. I take a lot of photographs for this blog myself, but most photographs you see of me were taken my him. These particular photographs were taken years ago  (see the original post here) when we had a semi-professional cam. Right now, we rely on our cellphones and yoga tablet for pics.

  3. Hello Ivana
In my opinion you chose the best photo to make your portrait !! And how lucky you are to have a husband who likes taking pictures so much and understands your passion for art and fashion. I really liked your portrait, better than a Modigliani ahahhah !! Seriously, I loved it !!

  5. Hey Ivana, hope you had a nice week! How's everything so far? I love that you're staying creative and full of new ideas!

I love Staedler, actually many of my tools in the university were from this brand and couldn't been happier with them... from the pencils to things like rulers and erasers (best for me!). I love this interpretation of your own, you really captured your energy and your expression in the most poetic way.... and what I like the most is the mixture of colors, both in the drawing but in the real life... I see you're wearing a lot of scarfs in the hair lately and I love it!

Thanks for your support in the latest blog post, your feedback is so valuable to me!

    Enjoy the weekend!

  9. I love the scarf bow in your hair and I think you did a great job with the illustration! It's so nice your husband is so supportive and helps you with taking pics - now my kids are bigger I sometimes get them to take a pic when we are out but they don't always want to and so I don't pus them! I take pics in the backyard before we go out anywhere, myself with a camera and tripod and that's what I use most of the time.

Hope that you are having a lovely weekend :)

  11. Dearest Ivana,
this is really a great series of photos - my compliments to your husband! I think the photo you have chosen is perfect for your purpose and the slightly "tousled" hair with the bow actually looks wonderful on you. And you implemented the portrait very well in your unmistakable style.
I would also like to thank you very much for your kind words about my previous post about "adventures" of our cat and our work as extras. It's a shame that it didn't work out for you to be an extra at GOT, that would definitely have been a very exciting thing! But maybe it will work with another series or another movie that is shot in your area.
    Warm weekend greetings,
    Traude

  16. I agree that these photos are utterly gorgeous! I really love them so much - he really does capture every nuance in your facial expressions and you look so young and pretty with your hair like that! Well done on your portrait- I really like the way you captured the lushness of your hair and the hair ribbon.

  17. Fantastic photos! I used to have my husband take my outfit pictures, but he quickly lost patience, so I learned to use my timer - I take 99% of my own pictures.

I love the painting, but I feel like the red on the cheeks is a bit too pronounced - can it be toned down a bit? You're an amazing artist, Ivana!

    1. Yes it could be toned down and it would probably look better that way, more natural and less distracting but for some reason I liked the bold redness and decided to keep it. I will definitely go softer on a new version (if I paint it), though.

All your comments mean a lot to me, even the criticism. Naravno da mi puno znači što ste uzeli vrijeme da nešto napišete, pa makar to bila i kritika. Per me le vostre parole sono sempre preziose anche quando si tratta di critiche.
