A STRIPED SCARF TO RULE ALL SCARVES (SUMMER STYLING)

In this post,  I'll show you two more ways to style a scarf. Why do I say two more? Well, because I have already showed you so many different ways to style this scarf! Those of you who have been following my blog for a while must be familiar with this foulard. On this particular day, I wore it both as a tie and as a belt. In the past, I have worn it in a number of ways, as a headband, as a cover up, as a skirt, as a top and even a cape of sorts.

I'll link up my other looks with this scarf below, because sustainable fashion and so on. Why, isn't it fun to create stories with items we have! That's might be what I love most about clothes, fashion and fashion blogs. The stories they tell. In my last post, I wrote a little bit about blogging and today- I guess I still have some things to say about it.

You know, a long time ago I came upon this interview with a fashion director in a fashion magazine. This man (a director of a fashion week at the time) was asked what he thought of a fashion blog phenomena and he said that it seemed narcistic to him, posting about what one wore and all that. A fashion CEO thought that! I chuckled at his reply. There he was, posing in his underwear for editorial photo shoot, calling someone a narcist for taking a photo of their outfit.

A man that (as far as a I know) hasn't worked as a model a day in his life and that was probably using this interview for the magazine to show off his physique. I don't blame him for seizing that opportunity, but could it not also be called narcissistic behaviour? I mean it would make more sense for a fashion director to pose in a suit than in his underwear, but I digress. My point is that you should not only look at what is said, but also who is saying it and why. That's a proverb I used to hear growing up all the time, and only now do I  fully understand it.

Sometimes people speak from insecurity and you know- deep thoughts don't really come from a place of insecurity. I think there was a time when fashion industry was kind of afraid of blogs, or saw them as competition for some reason. Nowadays, this has changed but this saying that it is narcissist tendency to photograph what we wear on daily basis stayed on my mind.

I remember I thought to myself- maybe I'd reflect on what you say, only if it didn't come with such an editorial. For really, why should posting a photograph of one's outfit be considered narcissism? What is wrong about enjoying clothes, especially if you're sustainable in your fashion choices. I mean, really, some people are just mean. This was all before social media networks really took the place of fashion blogs. I wonder what this man would have thought of today's trends. Isn't everyone posting their outfits nowadays? Things might be changing, but blogs are here to stay. Fashion blogs differ greatly one from another, and that's what I love about them. There are hobby blogs and professional blogs. Fashion blogs and blogs in general are dynamic and always changing. On fashion blogs, I read about topics both deep and light, serious and trivial, for isn't life a mix of both?

I remember reading a book ( Love  Style  Love) by French blogger Garance Dore and how she said she wrote about things as light as whether she needs another pair of flats and thing as serious as grieving her grandmother's death. Over the years, I read countless fashion posts. Some of them were about light topics, but many of them were quite serious writing about professional struggles, work and life balance, chronic illnesses, and so on. In all honestly, I have never gained the impression that any of the fashion bloggers I read displayed any narcissism tendencies. I don't think we're doing anyone any harm by documenting our outfits. If anything we're creating virtual diary of what we wear, and that can be very helpful for shopping our closets and becoming more aware of our fashion choices.

A few quotes from Love Style Life

“Remember, hello is such a wonderful opportunity! Use all these free hellos to send good vibes out into the world, to build your persona, and as an opportunity to smile more. We all look better when we’re smiling anyway.”

.....

“Now that I can talk to you from age forty, I can tell you—don’t worry, it’s all good. Life is the same, only better. Never perfect, never settled, never figured out, but ever beautifully flowing.”

.....

“I hope it will last forever, but maybe it will be just a few days, and it will be great either way. Because you never stop learning about love. Love is joy, pain, surrender, laughter, pleasure. Love is chemistry. Love is one of life’s greatest adventures. And with love, we’re kids forever, stumbling and learning as life unfolds. And this is why, whatever happens, we must keep our hearts open.”
Garance Dore, Love Style Life

Those eagle eyes among you might have noticed that I'm wearing two different pairs of shoes. I only noticed it when I uploaded these photographs on blog. What happened? Well, probably I decided to change into my platform sandals heels, as they are more comfortable than my sandal heels. Both of these pairs are skin coloured and come with a thick heel, but only one pair has a platform that actually makes the heels smaller. If you can't do heels, try platform heels. A nice medium platform (nothing too crazy) on the front of the shoe will give you extra height and it will shorten the heel you're actually wearing. That's shoe math!

A SUMMER STYLING WITH TROUSERS- HOW I WORE IT BEFORE?

Let's start with the scarf!

ONE SCARF TO RULE ALL SCARVES

I have a lot of scarf, but this is THE scarf. This is the scarf I reach for most often. Of course it has an interesting history. My mother got it as a present from some Belgian diplomat. The best thing about this scarf is that it is an accessory that can be worn in a dozen of ways.  You can wear a scarf as a belt or a headband. You can tie your scarf around your neck, around your waist, around your ponytail, and even around your hand. You can use it as a cover up on the beach or as a cape to cover your shoulder. I have even been known to tie it around dresses I deemed too short. Really, the possibilities are endless.  Scroll down to see a list of posts featuring this navy, white, yellow and red scarf!

How I wore it as a headband!

1) HOW TO WEAR THE SCARF TREND FOR SPRING AND SUMMER? Back in 2019, I published this post showing you different ways to style this scarf (foulard). I showed you an outfit in this post and explained how I matched my outfit with the colours of the foulard I was wearing. It was a simple and comfy styling that made me feel quite chic. Now, that I think of it, the outfit that I'm showing to you today is quite similar to that styling. I mean the clothing items are different but the formula is quite similar. I don't wear trousers that often, but when I do, I typically opt for high waisted trousers with a wide or palazzo cut. There's something classical about a pair of wide trousers and I've always liked styling them with heels. Add a little scarf and it's amazing how much difference it can make.

It is always good to have an outfit formula to fall back one for those days you don't have much time or energy to think about what you're going to wear. One of the easiest ways to elongate your figure is by opting for a pair of high waist jeans and a cropped top (or blazer/ jacket). You can also tuck in your shirt, like I did here. If you wear a pair of heels with this combo, you'll appear even taller. Not saying that anyone should do that, try to appear taller, but if you want to elongate your look, this is a simple and easy way to do it. Tops and wide cut pants are always a chic combo, and a scarf will add something extra to every outfit.

2) TWO WAYS I WORE THIS SCARF FOR VISITING KRAVICE IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA! Back in 2013, I posted about visiting Kravice in all seasons. You can see two different outfits featuring this scarf there. Once I wore it with jeans and a red top for a spring styling, and for the summer look I styled it with a black dress!

3) HOW TO SPICE AN OUTFIT WITH A SCARF? Back in 2016, I wore this scarf with a green dress for a visit to Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In that post I wore a scarf both around my neck and around my waist. You may have noticed that I like wearing scarves as belts. Anyhow, I was surprised to see how short my hair was in that post. I don't even remember cutting it that short. It was a proper bob and somehow my outfit seemed more stylish because of it. Should I cut my hair in a bob again?

4) STYLING A SCARF AS A BELT FOR A DENIM SKIRT WORN WITH A CROPPED TOP

Back in 2016, I wore this scarf as a belt for one of my favourite skirts. My hair was also kind of short, but longer. Wait, this was the same year as the last post and the bob I mentioned. It has grow out quickly! Here you can see another outfit where I wore this scarf as a belt-with a vintage red dress.

5) DIFFERENT WAYS TO STYLE A SCARF, INCLUDING AS A HAT COVER UP!

One of the most interesting ways for wearing this scarf is wrapping it around a summer hat, creating a sort of cover up. That kind of look will really protect you against the sun! I do that sometimes when the sun is really strong. In this 2013 post, you can see a couple of different ways to style this scarf.

6) WEARING A SCARF WITH A MAXI DRESS AS A CAPE

In 2020, I styled this scarf as a cape for a maxi dress. It worked great as a sort of cover- up for my crochet maxi. The crochet maxi has an open back and since I wanted more protection against the sun, I realized that I can just wrap this scarf  and style it as a cape. It served wonderfully to protect my shoulders against the sun. I'll include a photograph below to give you a better idea of what I did.

7) STYLING IT WITH A NAUTICAL PRINT DRESS I realized how there are many ways to tie a scarf. This striped style is quite long. Sometimes I tie it in a little bow like I did there, making it less noticeable and sometimes I like to tie it more loosely so it sorts of flows with the outfit.

TWO PAIR OF SHOES- As I mentioned, I'm basically wearing the same outfit in this post but with two different pairs of heels. It might seemed odd that for comfort I changed from high heels into high heels, but it makes sense if you know show math, that is, platform math.

THE BROWN PLATFORM HEELS-

IN 2021, I SHOWED YOU 53 WAYS TO STYLE THIS PAIR OF SANDALS.

IF YOU REMEMBER I HAVE ALSO WORN THIS BROWN PAIR MORE RECENTLY HERE  #54 AND HERE # 55 AND HERE #56 and HERE #57 AND HERE #58 AND HERE #59/60 and 5 more HERE, so bringing it to #65 ways to style this pair AND CLICK HERE FOR STYLING #66 .

I have worn this pair with jeans and a top in the last post I published, making it outfit number 67, so I guess that today's styling makes it outfit 68.

THE PINK T-SHIRT/TOP

I don't remember where or when I bought this pink top, but it was probably one of those unplanned purchases. I couldn't find any outfit posts with it on my blog, but then I remembered that I wore it for a trip to Split with my school back in June. So, below is a photograph of that outfit taken on Marjan hill. I'm posing with my colleague, one of our students took this shot.

THE BLACK HIGH WAIST WIDE CUT TROUSERS

I bought this pair at the beginning of the school year in Waikiki because my school has decided on a black and white dress code and I wanted another pair of black trousers. The trousers have proven themselves well and I wore them a lot.  How I wore them before? See how I styled them with a black vest, white shirt, a tie and a pepita black and white coat here.  Back in Spring, I wore them with a red blazer and a dark shirt. In February, I wore it with a black blazer and white top and that was basically one of my work looks. In January, I wore it with a pepita blazer and a shirt and a tie.

THE BEIGE MINI BAG

I wear this little thing all the time. I bought it in Borsa store in Mostar. You can see how I styled it with a black dress and beige heels here, with a purple and lilac outfit here, and with a brown maxi skirt and a mint blazer here.

That would be all for today. What are your tips for shopping your closet? Thank you for reading and visiting! Have a lovely day.

  2. Whatever you wear is flattering..I on the other hand. Nope nope nope..although, I hear from a co-worker that she loves everything I wear. I just don't see that when I look in the mirror. And I was laughed at a time or two in high school..so um, it would be very hard for me to be a fashion blogger. You have to be gutsy. You have to like what you see in the mirror. Thank you so much for the inspiring post. I love how you used it for a head rap. So fun to see your post. Oh, stay cool now!

    1. If you're not feeling very confident, I think it helps to just focus on playing with the clothes. Imagine you're playing a character. Remember to dress just for fun. You can also dress for yourself at home and figure out what works for you and what do you feel comfortable in.

  9. I'm a fellow scarf junkie! :D I absolutely love them. My usual ways of wearing them are:
    - at the neck, cowboy or "air host" style
    - covering my hair (the Movie Star Wrap. tied under my chin, or the boho version under hair)
    - tied to my purse
    - with long scarves, tying the ends together to make long "sleeves"

That's a lovely and versatile scarf, Ivana - and I love that it has a personal history. My oldest scarf actually belonged to my dad - I've had it since 1984ish, but it's from the 60s.

    1. I would love to see that scarf. Maybe I already did in one of your blog posts, but I forgot. I do remember the posts about your dad. He seemed like a really special person. It must be a lot to you to have something like that from him. I'll keep my eyes open for a future appearance of that scarf.

  10. Oh you do such a good job with styling these scarves love the look with the black pants it has such a fun 70s vibe to it. And yes this mans reaction is not surprising. I use to work in the publishing industry specifically magazines, dying industry. There is a lot of resentment as people who worked in this industry are being pushed out by new media. So yes they are not super fond of bloggers and influencers.
