TRAVEL WITH MY ART #5: FRANCISCAN MONASTERY, HVAR TOWN, CROATIA

Hello! I'm continuing with Travel With My Art series. The idea is to travel together with the help of my art. Every time I will show you a different location I illustrated and write about it. Today I have a new painting to share with you and this time I illustrated a historical Franciscan monastery on island Hvar. Yesterday I shared a watercolour painting of Split and today I will take you to Hvar town.  As some of you might remember, last year I lived on island Hvar. Having had enough time to study this beautiful island, now I feel confident in illustrating it.

A HISTORICAL MONASTERY IN HVAR TOWN, CROATIA
I visited this monastery last year in February. Read more about it here. Back then, I recommended visiting this place and I still stand by my word. Travelling internationally is somewhat restricted for many people right now, but hopefully it will be possible in the near future.  If you find yourself in  Hvar town, consider visiting this beautiful spot. If you stroll around, you'll probably come across it anyhow as it is located on the main promenade and quite close to the centre of the town. This monastery is a beautiful and serene, both inside and out. No wonder I wanted to illustrate it.  The bell tower is beautiful and even the wall that surrounds the monastery and the church is absolutely gorgeous. It is wonderful to see such an old structure so well preserved and taken care of. I imagine it hasn't changed that much since the way it was build. The whole area surrounding it, with the beautiful garden and the stone walls looks absolutely enchanting.

ILLUSTRATING WITH WATERCOLOUR PENCILS
I worked on this illustration while I was visiting Split. I don't really have much to say about the illustration process. I took some work in process photographs so that you can have a look at the painting process.   I'm not sure I got the proportions of the bell tower entirely right but on overall I still think it looks nice.  Once again the medium is watercolour pencils on mixed media paper. Scroll down to see more.

As always, thank you for visiting and commenting.

  2. You did a lovely job illustrating! Buildings look so tricky to illustrate with all the brick details but you always capture it so well :)

Hope you had a good weekend :)

    1. Thank you dear. I think people are the most difficult thing to illustrate, in comparison the buildings aren't that hard to draw.

  8. Dearest Ivana,
it is a good idea to travel this way when other journeys are not possible. This monastery is a very nice, interesting place and you did a great job of illustrating it. Beautiful photos of you, too. I enjoyed traveling this way. Perhaps you would also like to make a virtual trip to Austria - for example to the Basilica of Loretto or to the stone sarcophagi of Leithaprodersdorf? I cordially invite you to do so ;-)
All the best from Austria and happy Easter days,
    Traude

  9. Thank you for taking me along on another visit to beautiful Island Hvar and Hvar town. I know from your plentiful posts last year how much you loved living in this beautiful part of the world. The monastery is impressive and your watercolour pencil illustration of it is absolutely gorgeous. I'm also admiring the skirt and tights you are wearing in the photos. Have a lovely week, and you're always welcome to travel virtually to the beautiful places Belgium has to offer, Bruges in particular! xxx

  11. I love it when you post about Hvar! A monastery is always a really intriguing place for me to see oin the few occasions I have seen them- when I study the Medieval era with my kids, I talk about monasteries a lot so it is wonderful to see them still there, still worshipping God and people still using these special places!

    1. Thank you Kezzie. Monasteries are always such inspiring places. The educational system as we know it, the first schools in Europe, were started in monasteries. I think it is important to know that the middle ages were not a period of darkness, there were also wonderful works of art and literature being created in that period. Medieval music is so inspiring and timeless.

All your comments mean a lot to me, even the criticism. Naravno da mi puno znači što ste uzeli vrijeme da nešto napišete, pa makar to bila i kritika. Per me le vostre parole sono sempre preziose anche quando si tratta di critiche.
