STARI GRAD IN AUTUMN: WHAT TO WEAR FOR SIGHTSEEING?
Autumn in Croatia. An ancient city with its fragrance of sea and history. The smell of pine forest that lingers in the air. Stone houses that seem to have been bathed in salt. A labyrinth of history. A climate that allows you to wear a blazer in November. What more you could want for? We'll remain in Stari Grad for duration of another post. Let's have another look at this lovely city (and if this post doesn't provide enough information for you, you can visit my old posts here, here , here and here).
While we're at it, let's talk about getting dressed for sightseeing. My reason for visiting Stari Grad on that particular day were of an entirely practical nature, but I decided to make the most of the visit. You know that I'm a firm believer in being a tourist in your own area and all that. Stari Grad is a gorgeous city and I never get tired of strolling it. You know, I do believe that you can always be a tourist and a traveler, no matter where you are, if you have the right frame of mind and enjoy exploring and learning new things. The best way to explore a town by just be on foot. So, when we think of sightseeing outfits, we usually envision comfortable shoes, right? Yes, putting an outfit for sightseeing seems simple enough. You wear comfortable clothes and shoes, right? However, most people will also want photographs to remember the moment, perhaps even photographs you can brag with! While I firmly believe in the importance of living in the moment, we all know taking photographs is often a part of our daily lives. Photographs allow us to recreate moments and memories. Moreover, if you like fashion you'd also want your outfit to look cute. Sometimes it is as much about you as the sights. We do feel better when we're happy with what we wear. My outfit proposal of the way is comfy and I hope also chic. I wore something I quite liked and when you plan to do some sightseeing, I advise you to do the same. We should be practical when we dress for exploring, hiking or sightseeing some place, but that doesn't mean you should wear what you like. You'll feel better. Fortunately, there are ways to be both comfortable and stylish!

THE STORY OF AN OUTFIT
This outfit is mostly vintage. Not surprisingly, I really liked wearing it. The black maxi dress is vintage and it was gifted to me. I actually added some floral embroidery to this dress. One thing I like about embroidery is how you can always continue to work on it. I might expand this floral embroidery some day. I really like this maxi and I often wear it in the colder months as well. In fact, recently I blogged about 7 ways to wear this maxi dress and today you can see another outfit proposal with it. I think pairing it with a pink knit and a black double breasted blazer made perfect sense.
I wore a pink bag to match the pink knit but also to break the dark colours a bit. The pink cardigan I paired with this maxi skirt is also vintage. When I visited my grandmother, she noticed it right away, despite the fact that she doesn't see very well anymore. She was happy to see that I have kept it all these years. I'm certainly glad I did, although some credit should also be given to my mother for she it kept it before I ever knew of it. The pink bag and the biker boots aren't vintage, they are just old. The blazer is a second hand purchase but also a vintage hand one. These biker boots are a few years old and one of the most comfortable shoes I own. The pink bag is about two years old, I think. The fun printed tights are quite old, I had them for years. I think printed tights are always a nice way to add something special to an outfit. As it gets colder, I reach for tights more. So, that would be the story of this outfit. Nothing in this outfit is new. Just the way I like my outfits: sustainable and with a touch of personal history. Now let's get back to talking about Stari Grad city.
A STONE HOUSE THAT WAS BUILD AROUND THE TIME COLUMBUS DISCOVERED AMERICA
While I was strolling Stari Grad city, something caught my eye. An inscription on one of the stone houses revealed that it was build around the time Columbus discovered America. Knowing just how old this city is, I didn't find that surprisingly. Still, it made me think. How many of the stone houses I pass every day are that old as well? Inscriptions like that one really put things into a perspective. All of these stone houses do look old and I know them to be old, but I sometimes forget that many of these wonderful houses are really centuries so it is good to be reminded. Nevertheless, one can certainly feel the aroma of history in the air. Island Hvar is a heaven for a history lover. I'm so fortunate to be able to live here, even if only for a while.
THE ADVANTAGES OF A MAXI LENGTH IN THE AUTUMN/WINTER
Now, let's get back to the topic of fashion and the advantages of the maxi length in the autumn and winter. First and foremost, a skirt or a dress of maxi length will keep us warmer, so that's an obvious advantage. If you want to move for freely, make sure you choose a maxi with a slit, one that is stretchy or one with a wide cut. Secondly, a maxi is a great way to change things up a little bit. Thirdly, a maxi can be a wonderfully feminine choice. Finally, there are so many ways to style a maxi. You can pair it with sneakers to make it more comfortable and easy or wear it with heels for a dressed up look. A maxi can even evoke a bit of school glam. If you want to dress in a feminine way but still be warm, a maxi might just be the way to go. Do you agree?
STARI GRAD, A CITY WITH A VERY FRIENDLY CAT POPULATION
One fun fact that I have noticed about Stari Grad is that it has an extremely friendly cat population. Not that I haven't seen other charming cities with friendly cats, but in Stari Grad the feline hospitality seems especially pronounced. Can it be a coincidence that every time I'm there I happen upon so many adorable friendly cats? I cannot tell for sure, but I do distinctly remember meeting friendly cats around every time. If you take look at my some of my other posts (for example here), you'll notice a pattern. It seems that around every corner in Stari Grad there is a friendly feline waiting to make a friend. The cats here are very sociable and well behaved. It's really charming, especially if you are a cat lover.
As always, thank you for reading and commenting.
Wow, I can't believe how old that home is! We have very little in my city that is more than 150 years old. I love being in a place with that much history.
ReplyDeleteI love your comfy sight-seeing outfit - I agree, we don't have to look like slobs when we are traveling or even wandering around our own towns! And you are so right, you have to start with the shoes!
Aw, I love seeing the friendly cats! Have a great week, Ivana!

DeleteThank you for another extensive tour of Stari Grad. I love the scent of the sea and pine trees, the latter triggering many a childhood memory, so in addition to being picturesque and full of history, walking those enchanting narrow streets would also be a sensory delight. I'm also a firm believer of living in the moment, but as a prolific photographer, I've been taking photographs for many years, and I love the memories they evoke. I'm loving your sightseeing in your own town outfit, especially that cute pink knit! xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you dear. They do evoke those special moments, don't they?

ReplyDeleteI love all the cats. I like cats on holidays. Stari Grad ooks a great places to stay.
The outfit works really nicely and I agree with how a maxi is very feminine. I ALWAYS get lots of compliments from people when I wear maxis (quite often the BOYS at school compliment me on maxis- bizarrely!) I think it's because I am tall and someone, they accentuate my height!
Yes, that might be it! Thank you.
DeleteОтличный жакет! Какая осень без клетчатого принта)

DeleteIvana, I just love that you explore your area like you do. We all need to do that more. AND that you always look so nice. Personally I get tired of people in jeans and t-shirts all the time. You show us how you can go exploring and still look wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThat purse really caught my attention...it's fabulous.
And that kitty is so sweet.

Me too! Jeans are great but it can get tiring to see everyone in jeans and tees. We need more diversity for every day outfits.
DeleteWhat a beautiful setting! I really love your outfit. I am now inspired to wear pops of pink with my fall outfits LOL Enjoy your week!

Autumn really does sound like it's lovely there!
ReplyDeleteI also agree about it being more difficult to put together a good outfit for sightseeing. You're right that it has to be both nice-looking and comfortable.
And I agree with you regarding a maxi skirt being a great way to be feminine but warm.
Thanks for sharing this lovely post.
