SPLIT CITY: IS DOMNIUS CATHEDRAL'S BELL TOWER WORTH THE CLIMB?

I already wrote about cathedral of Saint Domnius here. The cathedral is one of must see places in Split city. The Romanesque bell tower is obviously not as old as the cathedral, for the cathedral is truly ancient (the oldest christian cathedral to fully preserve its original form in the world). However, the bell tower of saint Domnius is a historical sight on its own. The bell tower is in many ways, a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Build in 1100 AD in Romanesque style, the cathedral saw some changes over the years but it has retained its beauty. Today this bell tower is one of Split city's most iconic symbols.

The bell tower of saint Domnius is definitely a great sight to visit. Moreover, the view from the top is nothing short of breath-taking. The stone design of the bell tower is not only beautiful  and historic but also very open. From every point of the climb, you'll be able to enjoy a spectacular view. Today I'll try to answer the question whether the cathedral's tower climb is worth the climb. Besides my writing, to answer this question I will rely on a modern means of communication aka - photographs. So, scroll down to see more and  to let me know what do you think. Is  the view worth the climb?

SAINT DOMNIUS BELL TOWER  DETAILS:

How to get in:
The entrance to the cathedral's tower is located right next to the entrance to the cathedral. You can't miss it.

Time & Difficulty/ My estimation of the climb:
The climb is definitely not that difficult as such, but the old and narrow metal staircase might be off putting to some. The stairway could definitely be more modern. There are about seven flights of stairs to ascend. The time needed to climb up will depend on the individual, but if you really want to take all the views and take some Insta worthy photos, I suggest that you set aside an hour minimum.

The price:
When I was there last the price was very affordable, something like ten kunas but I double checked and saw that the price has gone up a bit (20 kunas). If you plan to see other sights in vicinity, it is better to buy a ticked that will allow you to see another 5 sights including the bell tower and the cathedral for 45 kunas.

Possible Downsides And How To Avoid Them:
It can get crowded.  When we went for a climb, there were many tourists. However, you can avoid that by climbing early in the morning. You will probably feel more at peace if you have the stairs all to yourself.

What to wear:
Comfortable shoes and non restricting clothes. The climb is not terribly difficult, but it is still better to dress comfortable.

If you are afraid of the heights you can always start slow. You don't have to make it all the way to the top if it gets overwhelming. Bring someone to keep you company if that makes your feel less afraid. Personally, I have no fear of heights. Quite on the contrary, I seem to enjoy them. However, I regret not climbing the tower early in the morning. I think I would have had felt more comfortable we climbed it when the stairway was less crowded. As I already mentioned, the best time to climb it is early in the morning.

ADDITIONAL CLIMBING TIPS:

 REST AS YOU GO!
You don't have to be extremely fit to make it to the top, you can stop to rest as often as you like. You can also rest a bit even if you're not tired. In fact, taking the time to rest and enjoy  the view  on the way is a great idea. It will allow you to see more and get most out of the beautiful Split panorama.

ENJOY THE VIEW AT ALL TIMES!
Good thing about climbing the Split's cathedral tower is that there are no dark places, meaning you get to see the views as you go up. The higher you go, the better the view. However, even if you for whatever reason can't make it to the top, you'll be rewarded with a lovely view.

I bet you're thinking: " That Roman Emperor sure knew how to pick a place to retire!" He sure did. Aren't these views amazing. Just seeing these photographs makes me want to climb this bell tower again. These photographs are actually a few years old. It's been a while since I climbed this  tower. This summer I wasn't able to get around as much as I had hoped to, because of health problems,  but at least I managed to prepare and publish some travel posts. My health being what it is right now, I doubt I will be able to do any travelling, so it's always nice to remind myself of some lovely moments. Speaking of lovely moments, I also decided to edit some of my drawings and paintings to the photographs I'm sharing with you. I'm taking my art for a walk one could say!

Here, for example, I added a little fashion illustration of mine. I always feel like warning this purple hair girl not to get so close to the edge, but then I remind myself it's just an illustration! I did see some influencers taking photographs dangerously near the edge, I don't remember their names but they're some famous couple or something. Don't do that. Enjoy the view from a safe distance. I do love these photographs of Split city. It is such a serene view from top. You can even see the Croatian islands in the distance.

TAKE A MOMENT TO ENJOY THE VIEW FROM THE TOP!

View from the top looks something like this. Scroll down to see more. Wherever you turn your eyes, you'll be met with beauty. Here on the top, you can really enjoy amazing views on sides. The sea, the islands, the Marjan hill, the mountains, the old city centre. It is all there before your eyes. It really is a fantastic panorama. I have a feeling I could spend a whole day there, just looking and never get bored for a second. Maybe next time I will carry my lunch with me?

As always, thank you for reading!

  12. Hi Ivana
OMG you're like me, I can not travel either because of my health problems. I have also done many trips in the past and the other day I have been to review the photos.
I loved your tower climb and all your tips are important, comfortable clothes and shoes as well. Avoid the crowd by going early in the morning. The Roman emperors knew where the most beautiful places were. I wish you all the best. And may these health problems be just a little stone in your way.

  44. Predivne fotografije!

The cathedral reminded me of a place I visited in Lisbon last holidays (Convento do Carmo), besides the impressive architecture I really like how you can get the nicest view of the city from this place! Definetly photo whorty Ivana!

  54. You are so adorable! I'd take my lunch, tea and dinner to hang out there myself as the views are simply serene. I can so relate but unfortunately, I have a fear of heights so I have to stop somewhere before the top. Hahaha. I know some people can really push it when it comes to posing at the highest points they can find and looking at photos of them perched at the edge makes me sweat and about to fall out from wherever I am seated. So there's that. I love seeing the photos of you and your art that went to pose by the edge. Please take care of yourself, worry not about the travels..and I send you a lot of love and strength <3 :)

    1. <3 Yes, I think it's better for my art to pose by the edge than the real people. Some influencers pose in dangerous poses, I think that's really a bad thing to do.
