Fashion Illustrations in Pencil + My Answer To Drawing With or Without a Reference Dilemma.
Hello everyone! How are you? Are you enjoying the weekend? I hope you are. I won't take too much of your leisure time today, I'm just going to share with you two of my new fashion illustrations. This time the medium is pencil on paper. I used my own outfits as a reference for these two pencil fashion illustrations. Using a reference is a good way to improve one's drawing and rendering skills. On the other hand, drawing without a reference is a good way to improve one's imagination. My answer to this 'reference or no reference dilemma' is to do both. We should always find new ways to challenge ourselves, because that is how we improve our skills.
I draw from my imagination often enough, so I figured there is no harm in using references more often. In the past, I avoided using reference because I always had so much ideas in my head that I felt like a reference would only be getting in the way, but now I realized that there are many ways to be creative. You can be creative even while you're using a reference. I do find drawing with reference to be useful not just for improving my rendering skills, but for improving my perception and concentration. As they say, practice is key. Since I've started drawing more, I can certainly see an improvement in my drawing skills. I still think of myself more as a painter, then as an illustrator type but I'm definitely ready to work hard on improving my illustrating skills.
Drawing outfits with pencil was a lot of fun. It feels a bit old school. If you remember, last year I did a whole series of pencil fashion drawings of fashion bloggers. You can see it here (together with my acrylic and watercolour illustrations of fashion bloggers). This time, I used my own outfits for reasons of convenience. I had some photographs developed, and resting my eyes from the screen seemed like an attractive option. Now that I think of it, I don't illustrate my outfits that often. Maybe I should? I'll consider it. Maybe if I figure out a way to make the while process more interesting. Perhaps I will do something like an outfit journal. That might be fun. What do you think?
I have edited and uploaded both of these drawings to my account on Redbubble site this morning. Both of these illustrations are currently available for purchase on 24 products (see more here and here) via the above mentioned shop. Have a great weekend everyone!

I completely agree with you! It's great to do both things! I have no idea about drawing and illustration but I imagine that working with a reference can help you to improve your technique and as you said, without reference you are giving all the power to your imagination!
ReplyDeleteLove your illustrations! Hope you are having a great weekend!

I love the idea of a drawing journal with your outfits. Maybe even a side by side photo-drawing for each one.
ReplyDeleteLike you I do a mixture of drawing/painting from a reference and from my imagination. I like to paint flowers but I certainly can't buy myself a bouquet of flowers every couple of days. That would be much too expensive. I also can't get out and paint outdoors in a variety of locations so I imagine those too. The internet is a great resource for reference images as well and I'm thankful for that!
I love your point about still using your imagination and creative flair when using a reference for your fashion illustrations - there's always room for a bit of embellishment to any creation! I don't really do any drawing anymore, though your blog always inspires me to want to do so haha :) hope you're having a fabulous weekend so far!

thank you. A bit of embellishment is always good:). Good to know that my art inspires you, it would be great if it inspired you to take up drawing again.
DeleteGreat idea to use your own outfits as ideas for illustrations! And the photos mean you can easily refer back as you work! :) It's good to see you trying new things with your art :)
ReplyDeleteHope that you are having a nice weekend :)

It makes sense that drawing from reference would be a terrific way to improve your perception and concentration but I imagine it can be quite challenging when you are first starting.
