Modra elegija (plava tinta na papiru) / Blue elegy (blue ink on paper)
This painting is inspired by a poem Blue Elegy. This poem was written by Nikola Milićević (1922- 1999), Croatian poet, translator, journalist and university professor. The medium is blue ink on paper. I painted this one a long time ago, I'm not even sure do I still have this painting. Yesterday, while I was reading An Anthology Of Croatian Poetry in the library, I came across Nikola Milićević. I always loved this poet. Almost as much as I love Vesna Parun. Almost. However, I prefer no one to Vesna. Hers is the poetry that I read most often.
I'm in Split and the moment, so it is no wonder that blue is the chosen colour of my thoughts. I almost forgot how beautiful this city is in Autumn. The sea with its magnificent palette of colours: silver, green, brown, yellow and all imaginative shades of blue. The sound that heavy boat ropes make as they struggle to keep the boats in balance between the sea and the port. A Russian blue (cat) stirs with its paw the water of a puddle in front of the city cathedral. Seagulls are resting on the sand of Bacvice beach. A grebe dives in front of a catamaran. Not far away from here, there is another city, one in which the poet Nikola Milićević was born in. A city in which a magnificent canon leads river Cetina to the sea. Omis city. But about that city some other time.
Gotovo. No ipak nitko mi nije draži od Vesne. Njenu poeziju najčešće čitam.
U Splitu sam trenutno, tako da nije čudno što je plava odabrana boja mojih misli. Gotovo sam zaboravila koliko je lijep ovaj grad u jesen. More i njegova veličanstvena paleta boja: srebrna, zelena, smeđa, žuta i sve zamislive nijanse plave. Gnjurac zaranja ispred katamarana. Nedaleko odavde je drugi grad. Grad u kojem se rodio Nikola Milićević. Grad u kojem veličanstveni kanjon vodi rijeku Cetinu moru. Grad Omiš. No, o tome gradu neki drugi put.
wow this is so beautiful:)

ReplyDeletehvala...možda mi je čak i draža obala van sezone.
DeleteThis is so beautiful.

DeleteI have never read Croatian poets, unfortunately. But I love your illustration so much. It looks something mystic))

DeleteHere's my statement and you are here to prove it: everything can be a source of inspiration to create art, not only paints.... illustrations, poems inspired by poems, songs, everything! I think art can be found everywhere, we just have to open your eyes widely and I love to read your blog because in every post you surprise me. I didn't know the poem and the author, but I googled them to know a little bit more and of course your illustration with watercolors is something that I could connect with Nikola :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for inspiring us, Ivana!

you're right, inspiration can be found everywhere!
DeleteTotally agree with Pablo! You, my dear, you're "real proof" that everything can be inspiring - even a poem :) What about Split, it has to look very charming and peaceful right now, I wish I could visit this city during autumn, it sounds even more interesting that go there for a trip during the summer :)
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely evening, dear Ivana!

ReplyDeleteDear Ivana, how good this painting came into your mind while you are in Split at the moment! And after reading your words I understand why the painting came into your mind ... I really like what you painted and I'm convinced it matches perfectly this poem.

DeleteALmost every time I read your blog I think I should read more, haha! I can't remember the last time I read a poem, isn't that sad? :( Of course you know I love the colour you chose to paint your inspiration - blue is my favourite :)
ReplyDeleteHope you're having an awesome week :)

DeleteI love that this painting was inspired by a poem and it has such a wonderful feel to it. Blue is a color of many moods and the way you describe it in relation to Split during autumn is just lovely.
ReplyDeletethanks<3
DeleteI have to read something by Croatian authors one day! Adorable artwork :-)
ReplyDeleteI picture it - the cat Russian blue, seagulls and colourful sea... Here is getting warmer and I see forest and gorgeous lights in the windows of the apartments buildings and also the river is nearby.
thank you Claire
Deleteyour view sounds lovely too!
DeleteBlue was the one color ancient humans never saw. There is no word in any language from the time that represents it. Nature does not make blue thinks very often, at least not a true blue as we know it, and apparently the sky was a bit different then. Seems like something that might interest you :) Lovely artwork! xoxo
ReplyDeleteAll Things Bright and Lovely
thank you Shamu, I didn't know that ancient humans never saw blue, but I know that blue pigment is very rare in nature, usually it is a trick for the eyes, reflection or something of some sort...for example blue butterflies aren't really blue, their wings have patterns that mimic blue and create an illusion of it.
Deletesempre magnifici i tuoi disegni :)

DeleteSo nice that you are in Split now, dear Ivana, and the painting shows the city's inspiration, although you don't know whether you still have the picture or not. It is not a problem, the creativity and expression of one's self at a specific moment is what counts! I never heard of Nikola Milicevic, and the poem Blue Elegy and now I will look for it! Thanks for that, I love learning! Hope you have a very nice weekend, dear Ivana!

DeleteI feel like I 'know' Split just from your posts and pictures. I envision it a very beautiful and very inspiring place. A haven for artist like you as you'd find inspiration everywhere you turn. Your account of everything around you is very apt and would evoke blue thoughts for sure, blue being a color that represents the sea. The sky too of course. I look forward to reading about Omis in the future. I' sure it'd be just as interesting.
ReplyDeleteGreat work as always Ivana. I hope your week was nothing short of phenomenal.
