Today I shall review The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak. I was actually gifted this book. What a wonderful present it proved to be! Published in 2021, this postmodern novel follows two story lines and uses framed narration. The Island of Missing Trees tells the life story of a Greek Turkish couple and their adolescent daughter. This novel examines and explores a number of topics such as identity, migration, immigrant life, war trauma, memory, love and family. It's an ambitious novel that examines serious topics with due respect and sensitivity . I read it months ago, but I remember it vividly. Honestly, I cried a lot while reading this novel. It really moved me greatly. In fact, that is probably why it took me this long to finish this book review. I needed to emotionally process the story. The Island of Missing Trees is set in London and Cyprus. The narration isn't chronological . The story jumps back and forth, following two main timelines, one set in moder

ReplyDeleteI truly enjoy these images especially of those stunning buildings by the sea. I love ancient architecture and buildings. It is amazing how well built they were, lasting hundreds if not thousands of years!
ReplyDeletein this case they have lasted thousands of years...and I hope they continue to do so:) I'm also fascinated by how well built some constructions were.

DeleteDear Ivana, wow, all those pictures are taken with your smartphone? I like them as usual all of your pictures and I want to repeat that you really live in a wonderful region! And interessting that you obviously have the same kind of processions as we have here in Bavaria. Especially in May there is a tradition which is called "Bittgang" (I hope "Rogation procession" is the right translation) and which have the purpose to ask for a good harvest. I attended them regularly when I was a child and I have good memories on them. Wish you a good new week!

yes, all of them were taken with my smart phone. It is hard to see the difference in quality when the photographers are not enlarged and I don't know how to do that. Interesting to hear about your tradition. We have the same one and it is called 'blessing of the fields'. When I lived in Sicily, I saw a lot of processions on the streets. It must be a catholic thing.
DeleteIf it is really from your smartphone, The camera is amazing
ReplyDeletewhat smartphone do you use? I would like to know because I'll change my phone this summer that's why I'm doing research which smartphone with good camera quality on the internet :D

It's Huawei, but I can't say anything else...I would have to check the box to see exactly what type. It wasn't expensive ,so I guess it is not the latest model or anything like that.

DeleteI used to feel the same way about smartphone photos but I think the cameras on them have vastly improved these days and you can't beat the convenience of using a phone vs. a camera. The scene in the Bačvice, Split, April photo is stunning and your new boots look very stylish :)

DeleteGreat summary of your life in the last couple of months. Love the architectural shots, and water. Beautiful place you live in. The phrase "Glupost! Ne vjerujem u to!" jumped at me from the page of your novel. It sounds almost exactly the same in Russian. :) You look striking in the dark floral outfit, wear it a lot.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for your fiction! Yes, just post it on your blog and link to mine when I open the link-up at the end of May (hopefully, I will win over the technology :)))
thank you Natalia, the phrase is actually from a novel by a Portuguese writer but it hasn't been translated to English yet. Croatian and Russian supposedly have 70% similar words, but so is the case with most Slavic languages I think.
DeleteI'm glad that you shared all these pictures, Ivana, they are amazing! I especially love the pictures of you in the end, you look really pretty!
