Ночной дозор/ night watch/ noćna straža/ De Nachtwacht

"But a resolution to avoid an evil is seldom framed till the evil is so far advanced as to make avoidance impossible." As I was reading Far From The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy (a lovely novel  albeit 400 pages of small print is enough to make your head hurt) I happened to come across this sentence and it struck some cord deep inside me. I haven't been able to get it out of my head, there is such a ring of truth to it. Why is that? Why do we only stop when it is too late? Light and dark always in constant struggle.

Night watch. What is your first impression upon hearing these words? Rembrandt perhaps? Yes, I do adore that painting but I have to say it made me think of that Russian film Night watch that I have enjoyed so much  and the novels by Russian writer Серге́й Васи́льевич Лукья́ненк  that the film was based on (Дневной дозор,Сумеречный дозор, Последний дозор...)  . Now, the novels I haven't had the chance to read yet but I plan to, as soon as I improve my knowledge of the Russian language.

Danas dok sam čitala roman Thomasa Hardy-a (ne znam je li preveden na hrvatski) jedna mi se rečenica usadila u glavu " Odluka da izbjegavamo zlo se rijetko donosi dok zlo nije toliko uznapredovalo da ga je nemoguće izbjeći." Baš se pitam zašto je tomu tako? Svijetlo i tama u vječnoj borbi.

Zašto naslov noćna straža? Zbog noćnih fotografija, a i usput da vam preporučim ruski film Noćna straža (može i nastavak) ako ga slučajno niste pogledali. Noćna straža...Fotografije snimljene noću obično su lošije kvalitete, a i ja nisam baš vična noćnoj fotografiji, ali ipak sam ih odlučila podijeliti.

Rarely do I post night outfits. I'm not really on the fist name basis with night photography. In addition, my day and nights outfits do not really differ that much. I always wear what I feel like wearing when I feel like wearing it.  Below I'm doing some window shopping. What a beautiful painting that is!

    As always, you're adorable! Really, my friend. Hardy is right, unfortunately. I do not know why people do not think before they do bad things, but they think about it only when evil is done. It's so stupid .. makes no sense. But it's our world... so sad.

In this post, I'll review " Forgiveness Day" , a science fiction novella that is a part of the Hainish Circle. Published in 1995, "Forgiveness Day " won multiple awards. This novella is often published together with her other novellas from the Hainish Circle, and it can be find in various editions of Four Ways to Forgiveness and Five Ways to Forgiveness.   Thematically, this novella is a part of five stories featuring two Hainish planets, but it can definitely be read on its own. I think it functions well as a stand alone novella. I listened to it in audio form, and I didn't have any problems following the story.  The world building is simple and effective.
